Which pattern is better to take?
The choice of pattern for sewing a sundress from old jeans will depend on who the new item is intended for. If you are planning to sew a sundress for a child, then you can take one of the dresses from the wardrobe of your little fashionista as a sample.
The main thing is to choose something that the girl is comfortable in and that fits her in size.
With an adult sundress the situation is somewhat different. In this case, you will have to make the pattern yourself. It is better for beginning needlewomen to choose the simplest option, consisting of three or four parts, for example, an apron-type sundress.

- You can buy the trim ready-made, or you can cut it yourself from any material you like. To sew the binding onto one section, cut a strip of fabric of the appropriate length. The width of the binding should be twice that of the finished border (don't forget to take into account seam allowances).
- Finish the cut edges on the back of the piece with a single facing. Take the binding and press the seam allowances, folding the edges of the strip towards the center. Fold the ribbon in half width and iron well. Then lay out the binding and place one side against the edge of the cut. Next, the part should be stitched, leaving a couple of centimeters free up to the fold line. Turn the strip right side out and secure with pins. Using a machine, sew a stitch along the edge. This facing can be done for all sections, and a frill made of the same fabric can be placed along the bottom.
- At the final stage, the finished sundress needs to be decorated to your liking. To do this, you can use all the means and materials available to you: embroidery, applique, painting on fabric, rhinestones, beads, etc.
Sundress for girls
Sewing a children's sundress requires less time and effort, so we advise inexperienced needlewomen to start with models for girls.
Take a dress that fits the silhouette as a sample, and transfer its contours to the fabric, taking into account the allowance for allowances. Additionally, a denim sundress is supposed to be worn with T-shirts and turtlenecks, so it should be somewhat looser than a regular dress.
When we transfer our “pattern” to the fabric, we should have two parts - front and back. This will be the body of the sundress, which needs to be supplemented with straps and a patch pocket.
A denim sundress always looks stylish and appropriate. It can be worn not only in summer, but also in the off-season, as well as in winter. Such a universal item is usually quite expensive. You can save money by taking old jeans out of your closet and recutting them.
For an adult item of clothing you will need the top part of the jeans (from the waist to the fly), and for a child's item - the legs. These parts must not be worn out. It is better to use a pair that has become small or is out of date in style.
How to sew a sundress for a girl from old jeans
Now let's move on directly to creating a sundress. For convenience, we will divide the work into several stages. This will allow you to carefully monitor the work process and not miss anything.
Preparing jeans for work
A children's sundress requires trouser legs. Moreover, one of the seams will eventually be located in the middle of the back or front. This means, that only trousers that have not worn out between the legs during wear are suitable for work. Cut off everything that is located above the middle cut (that is, from the fly and above). Cut each pant leg along the seam. One of them will become the front part of the sundress, the other - the back.
Making a denim sundress pattern and preparing parts
Complete the work according to the samples shown in the picture.
If you don’t have the skills to make patterns, just take a ready-made sundress and use it as a template. Place the item over the cut trouser leg, outline, cut out. Mark the front and back of the product. Finish the edges.
Then take the unused scraps and cut out rectangular blanks for the straps. Size: 27x10 cm. Then fold the parts and sew the straps. While working, use contrasting threads in cheerful colors: purple, pink, orange or coral. The listed options go well with dark blue.
Important!
If there are a lot of denim pieces and long pieces left, you can weave the straps. If there are not many pieces, supplement them with regular fabric.
Then sew the pre-cut chest pocket to the front. This detail allows for the play of imagination. You can make a multi-sided shape or a round one. From forms, move on to decoration. Decoration options:
- pattern of sequins or beads;
- inserts from other fabrics;
- cross stitch or satin stitch pattern;
- lacing;
- patterned machine stitching.

- sewing on buttons;
- cutting holes for buttons, stitching them;
- additional decoration of the finished product.
At the last stage, you can use braid or lace, or create an applique. Skilled craftswomen often embroider patterns along the hem, neckline, and armpit area. We sew a sundress from old jeans with our own hands: a step-by-step guide
This solution is suitable for those who want to sew a product in the “Peasant Young Lady” style (underbust model, light flowing hem, length: floor-to-ceiling). Jeans will be used for the bodice (the trousers should not be low-rise), but for the hem you will have to buy a piece of fabric. You will also need lace (everything should match each other in color).
The pattern needs to be constructed in such a way that the waist line of the jeans becomes the high waist line of the sundress. The fabric of the trousers will be used for the straps. The neckline will match the front slit of the trousers.

Altering clothes is far from a sign of poverty. Although, of course, often such a need arises due to a lack of funds for new things. Therefore, old ones are used: frayed jeans are repaired or cut, dresses are sewn from shirts, coats are converted into jackets, and so on.
But turning one old wardrobe item into another new one is also a creative process. A lot of interesting ideas can arise. And these clothes were not necessarily worn. Perhaps the item was purchased and did not fit in size. And something that cannot be worn as is can be remade into something completely different, or modified or decorated.

Method number 1: flaps or stripes
It is logical that trouser legs are pieces of fabric from which a dress can be cut in the same way as from a whole piece of material. Only this will not be a one-piece model, because we are limited by the cut of the trousers.
First, we wash the trousers, if necessary, after drying, we cut out the fabric at the seams without any flaws (scuffs, stains, snags, holes).
The dress will have to be assembled from small parts. Choose a pattern with details that will fit on the trouser sections.
Tapered trousers alone are hardly enough for a dress, unless you are making it for a little girl. Therefore, you will have to combine two, or even more. In this case, the fabric should be approximately the same thickness and, naturally, match in color, texture or pattern.
Example of a two-pants dress
We used trousers made of the same plain thick stretch fabric in different colors: black and red. The dress was sewn, so to speak, at random, without a pattern. A different black stretch fabric is used for the sleeves, neckline and hem stitching.
1, 2. Trim the seams around the perimeter of the trouser legs. We get 8 pieces of fabric: 4 black, 4 red.
3, 4, 5. Make the middle of the dress red. We cut a strip for the front and back. If the length of the whole piece is not enough, we make it from parts. You can do embroidery.
6, 7. Cut out the side parts of the front. We attach two side parts to the middle part of the front.
8, 9. Draw an armhole line on one side. Cut it out. Fold the piece in half, trace the armhole on the second piece and cut it out. We correct the side line, cut off the excess.
10. Level the bottom.
11. The front of the dress is ready.
12. Place the middle back piece on the black strip of fabric (overlapping edges), trace along the edge of the middle piece.

From very wide knitted trousers with an elastic band, just the kind in which you can easily fit into the trouser leg, you can sew such a stylish dress.
Everything is done very simply. Place one pant leg on your body and the other on your arm.
Mark the width of the bottom of the sleeve.
Model the line of the sleeve. Sew a stitch from the bottom of the trouser leg to the bottom of the middle seams of the pants.
Trim off excess fabric and trim the edge.

But you shouldn’t always rush to throw away unnecessary clothes. For example, women's linen trousers can make an excellent children's sundress. It is sewn quite simply. The pattern is based on just a few measurements (waist circumference, length of the product from the waist).
Preliminary preparation
First, the trousers need to be washed and ironed. Then rip along the inside crotch seam.
If we cut off the top part (where the pockets and zipper are sewn), we will get two relatively even canvases with a seam in the middle.
There is no need to unravel it, we will open the product so that it will still serve.
Constructing a pattern
It's quite simple. In a normal case, it could be painted directly on the fabric. But we do not cut on a flat canvas, but on one that has already been used, so it is more convenient to work with a paper pattern.
Before
Bottom width = waist circumference + 2 cm. We make the height and width of the upper part as desired, measuring on the child from the waist line up. Side seam to armhole = about 5 cm. This is for a child about 110 cm tall. We draw the armhole line with an arc, smoothly connecting the side seam with the top of the product.
Back
It is built in the same way. We measure the height and width of the upper edge individually on the child.
Skirt
This detail is the same for the front and back. Width = waist circumference + 2 cm. Part height = product length + 2 cm (for processing the bottom).For patterns, you can use any paper, even old newspapers. Or glue together several sheets of A4 size white paper.
Uncover
1. Apply the paper pattern to the wrong side so that the middle of the piece coincides with the seam on the fabric. You can cut the top part as a single unit with the skirt.
But at the same time you need to look if there are any abrasions on the front side in this place. If there are problems with the fabric, the skirt will have to be cut separately and then sewn to the front and back pieces.
2. Pin the paper pattern with tailor's pins. We outline it with a pencil or soap if the fabric is dark. Mark seam allowances of 1 cm. Cut out.
3. We received the finished part for the front and back.
4. Cut out the straps from the remaining fabric.
We measure their length on the child. The width is about 2.5 cm. We widen the edge where it is sewn to the back slightly. In this case, the width of two straps should correspond to the width of the top of the back.
Sewing
When starting to sew, you should first purchase ready-made bias tape in the store or cut it out from leftover fabric.
The sundress is ready!
Making a children's sundress with your own hands is quite simple; the work does not require special knowledge and does not take much time.
