Scandinavian jacquard patterns are widely used in warm knitted clothes. Interesting Norwegian patterns are difficult to confuse with others; they are very unusual, but not difficult to create. Basic principles of knitting
Norwegian drawings have several basic principles:

Schemes of Scandinavian patterns are usually presented without description. But you shouldn’t be afraid of this, since it is very easy to read even for a novice master, because you can clearly see what should happen in the finished product. The checks imply one loop, and the horizontal lines imply rows. Rows of knit stitches are read from left to right, and purl rows are read from right to left. If the explanation of the pattern says that it needs to be knitted with circular knitting needles, then all rows will be performed only with facial loops. If you use the stocking knitting method for knitting, then the pattern must be read from top to bottom. Colored cells indicate the color scheme, and white cells indicate the background color.
Knitting such patterns is very simple. First of all, we knit the fabric with a thread of one color, then from the second ball we attach a thread of a different color. When you need to change the thread, we cross the two working threads and make broaches on the wrong side, as in the photo below.
You can change the color on any side of the canvas depending on the pattern. Please note that the broaches must pass exactly from one edge loop to the other. To do this, we knit the edge loop in the row with the same thread that was used to knit the last loop of this row. We fasten the broaches of the previous row at the beginning of the new one.
It happens that the broaches come out very long and it looks ugly. In this case, they can be secured by additionally crossing them with a working thread. To do this, before knitting a loop, we will throw a thread from a non-working ball onto the working thread, as in the image below.
In order for the product to look neat and not skewed, you need to remember the basic rules:
- The yarn should be the same thickness;
- During the creation process, it is necessary to constantly ensure that the thread tension is uniform.

- Two colors of wool yarn of identical width;

Operating procedure:
- Each cell is equal to the 1st loop of the 1st row, based on this, the width of the pattern will be 31 loops, and the height will be 31 rows. First, use the background thread to cast on 31 stitches and add 2 stitches to frame the pattern and 2 more edge loops. We knit the first and second row with this thread.
- Now we remove the edge loop, knit 9 knit stitches with the background thread and attach one loop in a contrasting color and again 9 loops in the background color. We knit the edge loop with a purl loop. To ensure that the contrasting thread is not drawn too long, it must be secured using the method described above.
- In the 3rd row, the diagram must be read from left to right. We knit with purl loops: an edge loop, 9 loops with a background thread, then 2 loops with a contrasting thread, then again with a background thread, 11 loops and 2 loops with a contrasting thread, then 9 loops with a background color and an edge loop.
- We knit all the following rows exactly according to the pattern. If everything is done without errors, you will end up with a beautiful eight-pointed star ornament.
Other options
Ornaments with deer are also considered a traditional Scandinavian pattern. Most often they make two deer in a mirror image. This pattern looks very beautiful when combined with white and black.
When knitting sweaters, patterns with combinations of different stars and geometric shapes are often used.
There are “lazy” Scandinavian jacquards, they are very easy to make, but very effective. They can be not only winter-themed, but also plant-themed.

On 4 mm circular needles, 80 cm long, cast on 172 (188, 208, 224) stitches, join into a circle, mark the beginning with a marker and knit an elastic band as follows: *K2, P2; repeat from * in a circle. Tie 5 cm with an elastic band. Switch to 4.5 mm circular needles and continue working in stockinette stitch. In the first round, evenly decrease 12 (12, 16, 16) sts = 160 (176, 192, 208) sts. Knit 35 cm from the beginning of the work and divide the work into the front and back by 80 (88, 96, 104) sts. for each side. Set aside stitches for the front and knit only the back.
