• How many days off do we have in May? How we celebrate May 1st of the year

    27.12.2023

    After the New Year holidays, the May holidays are traditionally a legitimate opportunity for Russians to take a break from work and spend time with family. In 2016, at the beginning of May, the country will rest for a whole week, albeit with a three-day break.

    The May holidays have once again been significantly extended. In May 2016, the Russians’ production calendar includes two series of non-working and holiday days: from April 30 to May 3, inclusive, and from May 7 to May 9. There are seven days off in total, with three days of work in between. This procedure applies to all employees of government and commercial organizations with a standard work schedule.

    Thus, Russians will spend the first 10 days of May 2016 as follows:

    • April 30 – Saturday, day off;

    • May 1 is a Sunday, a public holiday, so the day off is moved to Monday, May 2;

    • May 2 – Monday, rest for May 1;

    • May 3 - Tuesday, rest for Saturday January 2;

    • May 4 and 5 are regular working days;

    • May 6 – Friday, working day, work as usual;

    • May 7 and 8 - Saturday and Sunday, days off;

    • May 9 - Victory Day, public holiday, non-working day;

    • May 10 - Tuesday, the beginning of a shortened work week and the transition to standard work and rest time.

    It should be noted that April 29, 2016 is not a shortened working day, just like May 6. Since for all workers, short working days are recognized only on the days before public holidays, which are non-working days. Therefore, April 30 will be a short working day only for those employees who work six days a week.

    Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation N 1017 “On the postponement of days off in 2016” was signed by the head of the Cabinet of Ministers Dmitry Medvedev back in 2015. The transfer of the holiday on January 2 to May 3, by virtue of the document, is the last in 2016.

    Officials made the decision to move the New Year holidays to the May holidays in 2012. Then, for the first time, the authorities extended the May holidays. Corresponding changes have been made to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. True, in 2016, the May holidays accounted for only one day of the holidays; the remaining two days were given to March 7 and February 22, increasing the rest time for the celebration of March 8 and February 23.

    A complete list of holidays and non-working days is given in Article 112 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. By virtue of the order of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation dated August 13, 2009 N 588n, when transferring a day off to a weekday, the duration of work on the former day off must correspond to the duration of the working day to which the day off was transferred.

    Work on weekends and non-working holidays is prohibited, except in cases provided for by labor legislation. Employees can be recruited to work only in cases and in the manner provided for in Article 113 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. At the same time, wages on weekends are carried out according to the standards provided for in Article 153 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. This means that for work on a weekend or a non-working holiday, an employee must receive payment of at least double his salary or tariff rate. In addition, at the request of the employee, he may be given another day to rest.

    The May weekend of 2016 is just around the corner, we’ll tell you which days we rest and which we work, according to the official holiday calendar.

    In May, Russia celebrates several wonderful holidays. On May 1 we celebrate Labor Day, which was originally called International Workers' Day. And on May 9 we celebrate Victory Day.

    There is a very short gap between the holidays and many people want the weekend to last from May 1 to May 9, 2016. Some on May holidays have planned trips to the dacha to dig deeper into the soil, others want to go on a short trip with their family. In a word, in May there are no unnecessary weekends.

    But in holiday calendar 2016 not all of these dates are marked in red!

    How we relax on May 1, 2016

    In 2016, May 1 falls on a Sunday, so we should expect the weekend to be postponed. This is true. Monday, May 2, will also be a day off. You won’t have to go to work on Tuesday, May 3, since the day off has been moved to this day from Saturday, January 2.

    As a result, on May Day in 2016 we will rest for four days:

    • April 30 (Saturday);
    • May 1 (Sunday);
    • May 2 (Monday);
    • May 3 (Tuesday).

    Following the May Day holidays, only three working days await us: Wednesday, May 4, Thursday, May 5, Friday, May 6. And then it's the weekend again!

    How we relax on May 9, 2016

    Victory Day on May 9 in 2016 falls on Monday, therefore this day is a holiday. In this case, there was no need to reschedule the weekend. There are already weekends nearby on the calendar: Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8. This means that on Victory Day 2016 we will rest for three days:

    We return to work only on Tuesday, May 10th. But this is hardly a reason to be upset, since the work week will be short and Saturday, May 14, will soon come.

    By the way, on May 1, 2016, in addition to Labor Day, Orthodox people will celebrate another wonderful holiday - the Holy Resurrection of Christ!

    May 1 – Labor Day and Easter

    On this day in 2016, two holidays fall at once - the proletarian holiday of Peace and Labor, and one of the main religious holidays - Easter. The emergence of International Workers' Day is associated with the events that occurred on May 1, 1886, when six demonstrators were killed during the dispersal of a workers' demonstration in Chicago. This caused a storm of public anger and demand to stop police brutality.

    The uprising resulted in the death of eight police officers due to a bomb explosion. Four representatives of the anarchist party were accused of preparing and carrying out the explosion. The defendants were sentenced to death. In memory of this event, at the Paris Congress of the International it was announced that May 1 would be celebrated as Workers' Solidarity Day.

    Every May Day, workers will go out to rallies and demonstrations to put forward demands to the capitalists to improve working conditions, introduce social protection standards and shorten the working day. Now the original meaning of the holiday has been forgotten, but it is still very pleasant to relax and gather with friends for the first picnic in nature on a sunny May day.

    In 2016, and falls on May 1st. This holiday belongs to the category of ancient Christian celebrations - it was celebrated back in the time of the apostles. Before Easter Sunday, believers adhere to strict fasting for seven weeks. On Sunday night a service is held, then Easter cakes and painted eggs are blessed in the church, the whole family gathers at the table and celebrates the bright holiday of Christ's Resurrection.

    The bloody Great Patriotic War lasted for more than 1,400 days. As a result of a successfully carried out offensive campaign dating back to May 8, 1945, Berlin, the capital of Nazi Germany, was captured. Soviet troops, together with their allies, accepted the unconditional surrender of Hitler's army. Since then, May 9 has become a symbol of freedom and military glory. Mandatory attributes of the holiday are ceremonial parades, honoring veterans and expressing words of gratitude to them for the peaceful sky and victory.

    Postcard for Black Sea Fleet Day

    The fleet, located in the Black Sea basin, was founded 233 years ago according to the highest order of Empress Catherine II. This event occurred almost immediately after the annexation of Crimea to the territory of the Russian Empire. The first 11 ships of the Black Sea squadron were brought into the bay, where the city of Sevastopol was subsequently built.

    In the further history of the state, this fleet played an important role, helping to support the interests of the empire in the maritime space and in the Balkans. On the day of glory, sailors praise the fleet and lay wreaths at the monuments to the heroic admirals of the times of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.

    Day of Slavic Literature - a public holiday since 1991

    This is a holiday associated with education, exaltation of literature, culture and writing. In Russia, the celebration was introduced into the calendar in 1863. In 1991, according to a presidential decree, the Day of Slavic Culture and Literature was given the status of a state holiday.

    In particular, large-scale festive events take place in Murmansk, where a solemn prayer service is held near the monument to the creators of the Old Church Slavonic alphabet Cyril and Methodius. A festival is also held with the participation of writers, poets and artists of various genres from all over Russia. Literary evenings and festive concerts are held in the historical part of the city.

    May is one of the most complete months in Russia in terms of days for rest.
    This May 2016 will not be an exception!

    This month we have only 19 working days, all others will be either weekends or holidays. As for shortened working weeks, there will be none this year in May. This is due to the fact that the ninth day of May falls on a Monday and will be considered a full day off, and the first day is on Sunday, which by default is already a non-working day, which means that any holiday falling on it automatically makes the next working day a day off.

    So, let’s present graphically all the working days of May 2016:

    4 5 6 10 11 12 13 16 17 18 19 20 23 24 25 26 27 30 31

    From this line you can clearly see that we go to work for the first time in May on the 4th. We are also open on the 5th and 6th and then have long weekends until May 10th
    Total this month we have 152 working hours
    .

    Weekends and holidays in May 2016

    This May we have 12 full days of rest.
    Of these, 6 days off (including 3 Saturdays and 3 Sundays) and 6 holidays, which consist of two Sundays (1 and 8 May), two Mondays (2 and 9 May), Tuesday - 3 and Saturday - 7 May.
    To more clearly represent all weekends and holidays, let’s depict them graphically:

    1 2 3 7 8 9 14 15 21 22 28 29

    19 working days and 12 days off- in total, in May 2016, the weekend lost to workers by exactly a week.
    Let us remember that in 2015 there was a more attractive arrangement: 18 workers versus 13 days off, and May 8 was then a pre-holiday, shortened working day, because it fell on a Friday.

    Signs of May

    There are quite a lot of signs in May, most of them, of course, related to the weather. Our ancestors planted their lands this month and relied on every natural phenomenon to help them get a good harvest in the fall. Therefore, over the course of many years, they were able to identify a number of patterns in nature, which we most often call “signs”.
    So, here are some of them:
    • It is believed that if May is rainy, June will be sunny and low in humidity.
    • Heavy hail in May - all summer there will be heavy short-term rains, but without prolonged cloudy days.
    • If the number of cockchafers is high, expect excessively dry weather in the summer.
    • Foggy May means rich harvests in autumn.
    • Traditionally, there are two cold periods in May - during the flowering of bird cherry and oak.
    • Rainy May - dry September.
    • Hot beginning of May - damp end.
