Fold the synthetic padding together with the top piece and baste along the edge.
Make handles and sew them according to the marks.
Fold the rug along the fold with its face inward and stitch along the perimeter, leaving 20 cm unstitched.
Turn the rug inside out, sweep the edges and lay a finishing stitch around the perimeter at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from the edge. At a distance of 15 cm from the edge along and every 40 cm across, lay relief stitches.
Fold the zipper and the bottom side of the rug face inward and stitch from mark A to mark B.

How is it better than a regular bedding with a pillow? Convenience. Here it’s 2 in 1 – both a pillow and a bedding, which are also much more convenient to carry from the beach because of the handles.
We will need:
1. Two terry towels.
2. Synthetic padding for a pillow (or a ready-made pillow).
3. Sewing machine.
4. Straps for handles.
5. Velcro (30 cm).
Fold the towels together (or the fabric that you have instead of towels), visually divide into 3 parts: 1st is a pillow, 2nd is a secret pocket. Adjust the dimensions for the pillow and pocket. Sew the towels around the perimeter, all the parts on the right, and then the top and bottom, the left part remains unstitched.

In fits of delight and intolerance, we fly south, forgetting about the necessary things: be it a blanket for the beach or a large comfortable bag in which you can put a couple of towels, a spare swimsuit, fruit for a snack, cream and water. It is because of this rush that you have to buy all the accessories on the spot, paying for them an amount that is exaggerated several times.
What to do? Of course, don’t worry, just stock up on the necessary materials, since a do-it-yourself beach blanket bag can be made in a couple of hours.
Beach blanket bag: fabric
So that the manufacturing process does not seem long to you, you need to prepare all the necessary components in advance. You will find most of them at a sewing or craft store.
When choosing fabric, it is worth considering the fact that the beach blanket will be in constant contact with sand, water and wet objects. Therefore, a raincoat fabric that will repel water is best. And thanks to the huge assortment, your product will look unique and interesting.
If wet fabric is not important to you, then you can safely take cotton fabric, which weighs very little and dries quickly. Also, remember that your beach blanket should be easy to wash. When choosing colors, we will choose bright combinations that will not only lift your spirits, but also make you stand out from the crowd of Chinese beach bags.
Accessories for the product
Now let's move on to construction materials, without which the lounger will not turn into a spacious bag. These components are also easy to find in any store that offers accessories for homemade sewing products.
- Handle tapes. Depending on your personal preference, you can change them to laces, slings, or strips of fabric. It is worth choosing dense, non-stretchy handles so that they do not cause discomfort while wearing.
- Foam rubber. It will add softness to our blanket, which is very important if you are relaxing on a rocky beach. Foam rubber 1 centimeter thick would be ideal.
- Lightning. In this case, you will need a detachable one to easily detach and fasten the walls, turning the beach and picnic blanket into a bag for personal belongings.
- Pins and needles for sewing.
- Good tailor's scissors. If there are none, then you can use ordinary stationery, in whose abilities you are confident.
Before creativity begins
It's time to cut out the blanks that we will use later. To do this, cut out a pair of identical rectangles with a width of about 70 centimeters from fabrics of two colors. The length is the factory length, which is the length of the fabric roll: usually about 150 centimeters.
We will also cut out several rectangles for pockets from the outer and inner fabrics, the sizes of which you can adjust yourself. We cut the slings for the handles to about 60 centimeters each. In addition, we trim the zippers, the length of which should not exceed 1/4 of the length of the entire rug.
Don’t forget about the foam rubber, which we also prepare for the stitching process. We will need about four rectangles, the total length of which will easily fit into our beach blanket.
Under the noise of a sewing machine
Now we begin the long-awaited period of stitching all the pieces together. In order not to confuse you, we will describe all the necessary actions step by step, thereby facilitating the process of visual perception of information:
- First, let's place all the accessories on the outside of the bag: to do this, spread the fabric along its entire length on a smooth surface, removing any unwanted folds and folds that have formed. Now you can attach the handles by taking them along their full length. We place them exactly in the center, leaving a distance between the lines of about 25-30 centimeters. We pin everything with pins, check the symmetry with a ruler and stitch it manually or using a sewing machine. We do the same on the reverse side.
- Sew a pocket of the same color onto the outside. To do this, take a rectangle blank, the width of which should not exceed 1/4 of our bedspread, grind the edges, bending them 1 centimeter and, having attached them to the base in advance, sew the pocket.
- It's time to place the zippers that we have already prepared in advance: we will divide them into two parts and place them on the outside of the bag. They should lie so that the side from which we will insert the lock faces the center of the product. Be sure to baste the zippers with sewing pins and check the functionality of the device. If everything is done correctly, the lock will easily turn our bag into a large lounger. Don’t forget to sew the locks using a sewing machine, carefully securing the ends.
Second side
It's time to sew the second part to our bed. To do this, prepare the fabric by laying it out on a flat surface in advance, and sew on two pockets for personal items, folding the edges.
Now we combine the two parts: this is very easy to do, since all the preparatory stages are already ready. We place these two parts with the wrong side facing us so that the right sides of both fabrics meet inside the product. Carefully machine stitch around the entire perimeter of the blanket, leaving one of the short sides untouched.
After this, we turn the resulting “bag” inside out, thereby preparing it for filling. We take one of the four pieces of foam rubber, insert it into the finished product to the very end and stitch the fabric next to it to fix the filler. Also, the place of stitching can be determined based on the zipper: it ends in the same place.
When all the filling has already been fixed with seams, bending the edges of the fabric, we sew the last open hole, carefully adjusting the handles of our finished rug.
Test of strength
Now that the beach blanket and bag are ready at the same time, we can check the performance of our creation. To be honest, once assembled, it’s hard to believe that a couple of moments ago a wonderful beach accessory was lying under us, boldly replacing expensive store-bought sun loungers.
In addition, when our locks are fastened, we have a real large and roomy handbag in front of us, which can easily fit a bottle of water, a couple of tubes of cream, a magazine or book, a wallet with cash, a phone, keys and a lot of other things that you definitely can’t take with you in a regular rug.
The beach blanket, a photo of which you can find in our article, is an excellent alternative to any purchased rug. And such products certainly won’t cost you as much as a homemade option.
The beach, whether river or sea, involves cozy sunbathing on the shore. But without such an important beach accessory as a rug or blanket, your vacation will not be a joy. You need to approach its purchase responsibly, since comfort and pleasant memories will depend on it. If you are still thinking of replacing it with improvised things that you will take with you, let me doubt their reliability and convenience.
No one will argue that a laid out towel on any type of beach will not save its owner from the unevenness and heat emanating from the heated surface. And an inflatable mattress, on which you think you can sit comfortably, will overheat in the sun and prevent your skin from breathing freely.
Types of blankets for the beach and picnic
There are different types of beach blankets available for sale. Each type of beach mat has its own structure, is made of a specific material and is suitable for a specific type of beach.
The latter are pebbly, mixed (small pebbles and sand), grassy and sandy. To choose the right beach blanket, you need to know in advance which type of beach you will go to. Now we will understand what is remarkable about different models of rugs and where their use will be justified. As for ordinary bedspreads, they are now very popular.
Transformable bags with soft fillings
This fabric mat with foam filling is compact and comfortable. It is made in the form of a bag with handles with side zippers. An additional side pocket is designed to store small items, such as room keys. The handles are made to the length required to carry the bag on the shoulder.

Such bedspreads are also called mats because they are made double-sided: on one side, tightly woven straw, and on the other, foil.
This bedding, despite the fragile material, is very wear-resistant. The straws are collected into strips of a certain width and length; the final size of the entire bedspread depends on the number of these strips. Most of them consist of three lanes, which can normally accommodate one person, or an adult and a child. For two people, it is worth purchasing a large rug consisting of four stripes. It is noteworthy that it would be perfect on a pebble beach, by the way. It will even out all the surface unevenness and you will be comfortable sunbathing on it. Its bottom layer, consisting of moisture-repellent and sun-protective foil, will protect its owner from contact with hot stones and unexpected waves.
Handles, pockets and ties can be made on a fabric or oilcloth base. If you choose, you must give preference to matter. As practice shows, a fastener with a button on oilcloth quickly stretches and then breaks. And this does not necessarily happen because the rug was folded incorrectly. This is simply a feature of the oilcloth from which these bedspreads are made.
As already mentioned, these rugs are made up of stripes. Each of which is performed separately. It consists of stacked straws trimmed around the perimeter with fabric. Then these strips are stitched together - these places are the folds of the fabric. The litter folds over them and does not break. It is perhaps worth noting that for those who like soft rugs, it may not be suitable, then you can put a soft beach towel or on top of it.
Rugs with inflatable cushion
Everyone spends their time on the beach as they please.
Buy a model with an inflatable headrest, then if you want to sleep, you can deflate it and ensure a comfortable sleep. You can also adjust the height of the pillow to suit you using less inflation.

The folding mat is made of plates connected to each other. Its upper part is made of natural materials. The bottom is made of artificial fabrics with high water-repellent ability. The layer is polyethylene foam. It is soft and light. It's comfortable and convenient to be with him.
For the first model you will need:
- main material measuring 70x140 cm (ours is cotton fabric with black and white stripes);
- material for lining (ours is pink crepe satin). The size is the same;
- padding polyester for laying;
- grosgrain ribbon;
- “zipper” for pockets (if you plan to make them);
- elastic band (it is better to take 1.5 cm wide).
Do not forget about scissors, thread, pattern paper, chalk, ruler, pencil, safety pins. Clean and wipe the sewing machine before starting work.
Synthetic winterizer is needed for laying, because we will sew a pillow bag. You will appreciate its advantages over a regular “sack” as soon as you get to the pebble beach.
Sewing in padding polyester will make the sewing process just a few minutes longer, but the finished product will be more functional.
Pattern
You can immediately cut out the details on the fabric, drawing it using a ruler and chalk into pieces of the desired size. But it’s better to use the good old method – a paper pattern.
Parts Dimensions:
1) Front and back sides of the bag(2 pieces), 36x40 (height*width) or one with a fold - 72x40 (length*width).
Here you need to add 5 cm in width on each side - for the side parts, so as not to cut a separate part. Thus, you will get either 2 rectangles 46x40 cm, or one rectangle 82x40 cm.
2) Bottom- rectangle 36x9 cm.
3) Pens– 100x2 cm (length*width). This is conditional; you can make handles of any length and width to suit your taste.
When cutting out fabric pieces, do not forget about seam allowances.. Leave 1.5 cm for them on each side.
All parts, except the handles, are cut out the same, from both the main and lining fabric. There is no need to cut the padding polyester.
Instructions (steps of action in the photo)
We duplicate the front and back sides of the bag with padding polyester. We do the same with the bottom. To do this, you first need to pin the part to the padding polyester, and then stitch them together.
Don’t forget to cut off the excess padding from the allowances; you don’t need extra thickening.
- Sew the back and front sides together.
- Iron all seams.
- On the narrow side of the bottom, mark the middle and align it with the side seam of the bag (on both sides).
- Sew everything together, padding polyester, if there is excess, cut it off.
- Press the seams.
- Turn the material inside out - you should end up with a rectangular bag, like in the last picture.
You need to sew exactly the same bag from lining fabric.
For pockets, you need to “eyeball” pieces of suitable sizes from the lining fabric. One pocket is usually fastened with a zipper; we have already provided for its presence.
Treat the edges of the pocket pieces to prevent fraying. Sew a zipper into one and baste them. Choose the location yourself, where it is convenient for you. Sew the pockets to the inner “pouch” of the bag. Turn it inside out and iron it.
You can also add an elastic band, which will serve as a “holder” for combs, water, etc.
How will it look like.
Pens
We have indicated the conventional length of the handles, but you can choose the one that will be convenient for you - longer or shorter.
They are easy to do.
We cut strips of the required length from the fabric, iron the allowances inward, pin, baste, close the allowances, sewing grosgrain ribbon on them - the handles are ready.
We tuck the ends of the handles and use the “square” sewing technique to attach them to the bag.
We put the inner “bag” into the outer one – back to back, pin together (look at the photo on the right), sew them together. We recommend placing a double stitch along the edge of the bag - this will prevent it from “bubbling.” Besides, the additional fastening of the lining has never bothered anyone. You can decorate the product as you see fit. For example, we used a ribbon bow brooch, but there are a lot of options.

How to sew from old jeans?
You can make many different useful things from old pants that you hate to throw away. The simplest thing is to make your own shorts. We are interested in a summer denim bag, so let’s get to work.
For the second model you need:
- old jeans;
- lining fabric;
- "lightning";
- grosgrain ribbon;
- pattern paper, ruler, pencil;
- chalk, threads, needles;
- decorations - sequins, buttons, beads, bows, appliques, etc., to your taste.
Take care of your sewing machine before you start: lubricate, clean it, replace the needle if necessary with a thicker one suitable for denim.
Cutting denim
This model, like the previous one, consists of several parts:
1) Two halves - side and front– size 49x40x30 (bottom width*top width*height).
2) One piece for sides and bottom– strip 90 cm long, 9 cm wide.
3) Pen 85 cm long, 4 cm wide. You can also lengthen or shorten the handle, and also make three pieces - one long and 2 short.
4) Top of the bag, consisting of denim tape - 2 strips 60 cm long, 3 cm wide.
When cutting, do not forget about seam allowances - 1-1.5 cm. We recommend that after preparation, iron the parts with steam to make them easier to work with.
How to sew correctly?
We start by attaching the zipper to the details of the top of the bag. After which they need to be sewn to the front and back.
The next step is to sew in the strip (side + bottom). We iron the seams.
Let's move on to the handles
You can choose any length, make one or several. In our case, there is only one – 85 cm long and 4 cm wide.
We cut it out of the fabric, fold it, iron it and sew it on. We put grosgrain tape on top of the sewn allowances, covering them. Sew the finished handle to the front and back of the bag.
Final stage
We cut out the lining in the same way as the outer part of the product. We sew the parts together and baste them to the top of the outer part.
It is better to sew the lining by hand, but you can also sew it on a machine if you don’t mind the handles and fasteners.
You can see the finished version in the photo. We use decorations (beads, sequins, appliques) according to our taste.
Bag-mat
The transformer is very convenient because it allows you to fit everything you need for a holiday at sea, and also turn into a beach mat.
What you will need for the third model:
- bright cotton fabric;
- waterproof material;
- braid;
- needles, threads, chalk, pattern paper, scissors, sewing machine;
- It is better to use fabric appliqués for decoration.
Pattern and dimensions of parts
You need two pieces of fabric 160 cm long and 55 cm wide. Let one piece be made of bright fabric, and the second from a waterproof material - varnish.
Also stock up on 4 pieces of foam rubber measuring 50x39 cm, tape for handles and ties about 5 meters long and 5 cm wide.
You can make patch pockets or not – at your discretion. We do not provide patterns for them, since you will choose their size and shape yourself.
Guide to action
You need to cut 8 pieces of braid - 5 cm long. These are the future ties for the sides.
Pockets
If you decide to make pockets, sew them onto a piece of fabric used for the front of the bag. Just make sure that they are not sewn onto the folds of the future bag.
The upper edges of the pockets can be finished with braid or just hem seams.
Ties
Sew them along the long edges of the “bright” part, attaching them from the wrong side. To attach them correctly, fold the future bag along the folds, and sew the ribbons at the top and bottom - opposite each other so that you can tie them together.
Almost done
Once the foam is laid, sew up the open cut. Don't forget to turn the seam allowances inside. Place a line between each piece of foam rubber so that they do not move or “run into” each other.
Pens
Process the ends of the remaining braid, tuck them in and sew them to the top in a “square”. You can also make handles from leftover bright fabric for the front of the product. But in this case, they need to be sewn immediately, together with the ribbons for the ties, onto the wrong side of the “front” piece of fabric.
