• Patchwork is difficult. Preparing for work. Quilting and patchwork - various patchwork techniques

    18.07.2019

Every peasant woman knew the technique of patchwork, but this art was called patchwork. Women did this on winter days, when work in the fields was completed. If the hut was decorated with patchwork pillows and the floors were covered with multi-colored blankets assembled from pieces of multi-colored fabric, its owners could be considered wealthy people. Patchwork for beginners in modern conditions, if you have a sewing machine, ruler, pencils, tailor's chalk and scissors, is easier to master than sewing a patch by hand, as great-grandmothers did. The fashion for patchwork returned to Russia from America, along with the name. Patch - patch, work - work.

Every peasant woman knew the technique of patchwork, but this art was called patchwork.

The simplest, but quite effective things are made from simple geometric shapes cut from bright scraps of fabric. Use for patchwork It’s not just possible, but even necessary, with materials of different textures and thicknesses.

Learning to accurately cut out and evenly sew small pieces of fabric so that the elements fit perfectly together, creating an even square, will not happen right away. Therefore, it is better to try your hand in a simplified way:

    1. We take thick chintz material in three different colors - floral, striped and with an abstract pattern.
    2. From the brightest one we cut out a long strip 15 cm wide.
    3. From two other pieces of fabric we cut out 8 cm strips.
    4. Place a wide strip with the pattern facing up.
    5. We fold the other two strips together, right sides inward. Stepping back 0.5 cm from the edge, we lay a seam. It is not necessary to make fastenings.
    6. The seam needs to be smoothed out.
    7. The resulting material is applied face down to the first (wide) strip with the pattern down. The parts are sewn together along the entire length at a distance of 0.5 cm from the cut.
    8. Using a straight edge ruler, the strip (still folded in half) is marked. It is cut into identical isosceles triangles.
    9. The finished elements are unfolded. Their seams are smoothed out.
    10. Now the parts need to be laid out on the table in the same way as they are planned to be sewn together. ready product. The drawing looks more original if its middle is formed by the corners of three-color squares converging at the center. Each needlewoman decides for herself how the stripes will alternate.

Using this technique you can make sofa cushions, bedspreads and even rugs. The only difference is the number of squares. When making large rectangular things, in addition to squares, you will need isosceles triangles. They can also be made multi-colored.

Crazy patchwork for beginners: a simple pattern

Crazy (crazy) is the most accurate name for the style of patchwork, produced according to the pattern “as God puts it on your soul.”

    1. When starting to make the base of a product from scraps of different sizes, shapes, textures, and colors, it is difficult to guess what the final result will be. Therefore, it is better to first put the pieces of matter in a certain order. Only then begin their docking.
    2. They can be joined on the wrong side of the product, but if there is a great variety of shapes of the blanks, they can be placed one on top of the other and hemmed along the front side with a zigzag stitch.
    3. Having collected the required size of the patchwork fabric, it needs to be shaped into the finished product using scissors.
    4. Now decorations will be used - lace, beads, flowers made of satin ribbons.

Crazy (crazy) - the most accurate name for this style of patchwork

Not a single master class, in which the entire process of making a pillow, handbag or other item is described step by step, can be reproduced exactly. Sewing, patterns for the arrangement of patches, the use of knitted and wicker elements in the design will make each item original, unique, inimitable.

    DIY “Quick Squares” technique

The main secret of this type of patchwork lies in the preparation and cutting of the material. To work, you will need only two types of canvas - colored and plain.

    1. Having cut out squares from pieces of different fabrics of the same size, they need to be folded face down.
    2. The squares should be stitched as close to the edge as possible.
    3. Having placed the workpiece on the table, use a ruler to divide it diagonally with a pencil.
    4. All that remains is to cut double material into four isosceles triangles.
    5. Having expanded each piece, we get combined squares.
    6. All that remains is to lay out one of the six possible patterns from them, sew up the joining seams and make a side border from braid or satin ribbon.

    Watercolor patchwork technique

The schemes for performing work using the watercolor technique are quite complex, although canvases are made from squares of equal size.

    Principle of drawing:

    • For work, fabrics with floral patterns are taken.
    • This style is characterized by the fact that fabrics of different colors with the same pattern can be used to sew a blanket, carpet and other large rectangular items.
    • Mostly, the assembly of the product begins from the lower left corner.
    • More often, tone transitions are used from light to dark.
    • The background stripes are located diagonally.
    • When using plain and colored fabrics, you can create compositions worthy of the pen of a famous landscape painter.

Schemes for performing work using the watercolor technique are quite complex

The watercolor patchwork technique requires a lot of patience. It will take time to master the basics of the skill. Watercolor painting lessons will be beneficial.

    Russian style patchwork quilt

The combination of red and white, yellow and black is an original Russian style. This selection of colors is deeply rooted in the pagan epic of the Slavs. Schemes of two-color drawings made up of strict geometric shapes are reminiscent of the symbols of the sun, rooster, and trees. These motifs, displayed on everyday objects, previously belonged to the history of the family and testified to its antiquity. Nowadays, not everyone can read the information embedded in a drawing, and the secrets of craftsmanship and techniques for performing elements are being revived bit by bit.

The blanket might look like this

    1. We take scarlet and black chintz in cuts of one square meter.
    2. Cut it into squares with sides 10 by 10 cm.
    3. We divide one second part of the blanks (of each color) into triangles.
    4. Divide half of the resulting triangles in half.
    5. For the central element, symbolizing the sun, we fold eight squares to form a crystal shape.
    6. The sharp corners of these two-layer elements should be in the middle.
    7. Next, they are joined by elements of a contrasting color.
    8. By combining large and small parts in rows, you need to get a rectangular canvas.
    9. About 20 cm before the end of the work, you can make a plain border.
    10. Next, you should make several poisons from medium-sized elements.

The work on creating a blanket with a plain wide border is finishing.

Handicrafts do not have strict instructions for performing one or another element. Each craftswoman has her own secrets and best practices. If necessary, an item made using the patchwork technique can have a lining on which patches will be sewn.

Recently, patchwork or patchwork has become very popular among craftswomen. And this is not surprising, because products made using this technique harmoniously complement any interior. In addition, this is a great opportunity to use fabric scraps left over from work. Of course, the process of creating products in this style requires patience and perseverance from the craftswoman. However, the end result is worth the effort.

Quilting or patchwork is a needlework technique that involves sewing small pieces of fabric together to form a geometric pattern from these pieces. However, creating something in this style is not so easy: this art requires the craftswoman to have skills in sewing, drawing, design and geometry.

Products in this style can be made either manually or using a sewing machine. The second option is much easier to implement and takes much less time.

During the process of assembling the product, craftswomen connect the scraps together, creating a geometric pattern in accordance with the chosen pattern. It is important to note that this technique is universal. It is suitable for creating products of any size: from small needle beds to bags and even blankets.

One of the interesting directions of this type of needlework is. As the name implies, it originated in Japan. This technique is slightly different from the classic one. So, japanese patchwork has the following features:

Japanese patchwork is a combination of several techniques. At the same time, this use of various techniques makes this technique unique, original and inimitable.

This is another interesting type of patchwork.

It is worth noting that it is very similar to classic version patchwork. However, in the case of this direction, the fabric is assembled not from fabric, but from knitted segments. Therefore, you first need to connect all the fragments, and then connect them together.

    Product assembly techniques

An important role when creating a patchwork fabric is played by the technique with which the craftswoman assembles the product. The result of the entire work depends on how correctly the method of connecting the patches was chosen. Thus, segments can be assembled in one of the following ways:

    • "Stripe to stripe";
    • "Watercolor";
    • "Magic Triangles"

For beginner craftswomen, the technique is most suitable "quick squares". It is quite simple to implement: the patchwork fabric is assembled from square segments. Inexperienced needlewomen are recommended to use squares of four colors.

Technique "watercolor" is very similar to the method described above. But in the case of this technique, many more colors are involved in the process of creating the canvas. You need to sew the squares according to the following principle: from light to dark or vice versa.

In the case of technology " stripe to stripe" The main role in creating a pattern is played by stripes that contrast with the main background. Moreover, the pattern made from these strips can be anything. Everything depends only on the intention of the craftswoman.

Drawing of a product made using technology "magic triangles", consists of triangular pieces of fabric. With the help of triangular segments, craftswomen create various geometric patterns.

    Patchwork tools

Properly selected tools greatly facilitate the process of creating a product. And patchwork was no exception. In this regard, it is necessary to take a responsible approach to the choice of tools for this type of needlework, as well as prepare everything you need in advance. To work using the patchwork technique, you will need:

    • Chalk, soap or pencil.
    • Graph paper.
    • Scissors.
    • Needles.
    • Pincushion.
    • Threads.
    • Sewing machine.
    • Ruler.
    • Centimeter.
    • Iron.
    • Cardboard.

Iron needed to iron the fabric before starting work. In addition, in the process of creating a product, it is necessary to iron segments, seams and blocks. By using pencil or chalk The craftswomen transfer the pattern onto the fabric. For convenience, some are drawn on fabrics and seams. In order for the pattern to be made correctly, novice needlewomen are recommended to use graph paper.

    Fabric selection

Before you move on to creating a product using the patchwork technique, you need to choose the right fabrics for future work. First of all, it is worth noting that there are no strict requirements for the composition of fabrics for patchwork. However, craftswomen should give preference to cotton, teak or chintz. Such fabrics hold their shape well, so they will not deform during operation.

In addition, for products created using the patchwork technique, you can use old jeans, shirts and other things. Quite often, jeans are used to create blankets. In addition, thick fabrics are well suited for blankets and bedspreads.

Once the fabrics for the future product are selected, it is necessary to prepare patterns and patchwork patterns.

An equally important element when creating products using the patchwork technique are templates. A template is understood as a pattern of parts from which the patchwork fabric is assembled. Templates can be made independently or purchased in specialized stores.

To make such a template yourself, you need to draw the outline of the part on a piece of paper or cardboard. Then, retreating 0.5-0.7 mm, make a second outline for the seam allowance. Carefully cut out the workpiece, and the patchwork template is ready.

    Assembly diagrams

After all the tools and patterns are ready, you need to select a diagram for future work. Despite the fact that the creation process may seem quite complicated to inexperienced craftswomen, there are many patchwork patterns that are suitable for those who are just beginning to comprehend this skill.

    Patchworking for Beginners

    Napkin made from scraps

To create a patchwork napkin, you will need 7 rectangular strips of fabric. These stripes can be any color. It is recommended to think in advance about the order in which they will be placed on the finished product.

Take two strips and place them on top of each other so that the front side faces inward and the back side faces outward. Having made a small indentation from the edge (0.5 cm), sew these two strips onto sewing machine or manually. Once you have the two pieces together, unfold the resulting rectangle and press the seam. Sew the remaining pieces in the same way.

Fold the resulting fabric in half with the wrong side up and, stepping back 0.5 cm from the edge, sew the product on both sides. Then, after cutting the corners, turn the work inside out and straighten the corners. Iron the resulting product. Fold the fabric inward from the unstitched side and machine stitch it so that there is a pocket on top for cutlery.

    Making a pillow

A do-it-yourself pillow made from scraps will be an excellent decoration for any interior.

First, decide on the size of the future product. The number of squares that will need to be prepared to create a pillowcase will depend on this. Having decided on the dimensions of the future product, as well as the work pattern, you can begin cutting out the patches. If desired, you can sew appliqués onto the squares. However, this must be done immediately before assembling the product.

Once the patches are ready, they can be sewn together. It is recommended to first assemble the horizontal rows and then connect them together. The seam allowances from the previous line are folded as follows: one up, one down.

Now you need to prepare the fabric for reverse side and connect it to the side of the patchwork blocks. To do this, fold the pieces of fabric with the right side inward and sew on a machine on three sides. Sew a zipper on the fourth side. The patchwork pillowcase is ready!

More experienced craftswomen can sew a patchwork pillow by making a “star” pattern from rhombuses.

    Patchwork bedspread

Before you start sewing a quilt, you need to carry out a number of preparatory steps:

For beginners, it is recommended to make a blanket from squares, as they are much easier to work with. As soon as everything preparatory stages passed, you can start sewing the product. The process of creating a patchwork bedspread consists of the following steps:

This is the easiest way to create a blanket using the patchwork technique. Experienced craftswomen may prefer more complex patterns.

Products created in the patchwork style will be an excellent addition to any interior. Of course, mastering this type of needlework is not so easy, but the product obtained as a result of painstaking work is worth the effort. The main thing is to choose the right scheme for the first work. And then the process of creating works using the patchwork technique will give the craftswoman pleasure.

Later in the 16th century, an abundance of various multi-colored materials began to be imported en masse to England. Scraps from sewing clothes were not thrown away. Wise housewives came up with a use for small pieces of fabric. Linen and wool decorated big pieces scraps, and small scraps were sewn together to create an appliqué fabric. In England, patchwork has become a very popular hobby.

This type of art appeared in America later. The famous kilt blanket was born here. Later they began to call all products made in patchwork technique. Over time, patchwork becomes American folk look art and is beginning to gain popularity all over the world.

How to make money from patchwork art

Professionals in this business should think about turning their patchwork creations into a small business. Today, everything that is done with one’s own hands is very popular – and especially patchwork.

To sell finished products, you can open your own online store or take it to a handmade shop for sale. In any case, patchwork products will be in great demand and attract new customers.

Therefore, think about it, because what you love can bring not only aesthetic pleasure but also provide you financially.

Mastering the technique of patchwork, or patchwork, for beginners can over time turn into a very useful hobby. It, as you understand, involves using pieces of different fabrics to create a new product. At the same time, the flaps are assembled into a certain pattern, which makes it possible to produce completely unique works of tailoring art. Clothes are sewn in the patchwork style, pillows, panels, bedspreads, decorative photo frames are made, and entire rooms are decorated.

Today we will try to give some tips on preparing for sewing and patchwork techniques for beginners.

How to select and prepare fabric

The patchwork style was originally a godsend for thrifty housewives: it used old worn-out items from which suitable patches were cut out. Now, for similar sewing, they also buy new fabric.

By the way, it is best for beginners to use cotton fabric for sewing. It does not slip, is easy to cut, and holds folds laid by hand.

The patchwork technique for beginners involves some subtleties. So, even if you have a completely new piece of chintz in front of you, wash it and then iron it. New fabrics can shrink in the product, which will turn your elegant creation into something lopsided and unattractive. In addition, some fabrics may fade during the first wash, and this way you will save your creation from unnecessary stains.

Please note that it is advisable to starch the fabric for sewing - this will make it easier to work with.

Patchwork technique for beginners: cutting rules

Patchwork for beginners, in addition to everything, is also a good preparation for sewing skills.

    • Remember that you should not draw on fabric ballpoint pen. To do this, use chalk or soap. And on light colors, lines made with a simple pencil are clearly visible.
    • Be sure to cut the edge, as it shrinks greatly when washed.
    • When cutting, do not forget to make a cut only along the grain thread, otherwise during the sewing process the patches may stretch and lose their shape.
    • For squares and rectangles, it should coincide with one side, and when cutting triangles and hexagons (“honeycombs”), it should be perpendicular to the base.

    Let's start assembling the parts

    • First, lay out the future blanket or tablecloth on a flat surface. Assemble a new pattern like a puzzle. The most saturated color should be the middle of the sewing. A lighter environment is chosen for her.
    • When everything suits you, start numbering the squares in rows.
    • Then, for ease of stitching, collect them in piles so that the first square is on top.
    • And start stitching. First, make rows of squares and only then, after smoothing them with an extremely hot iron on both sides, assemble one product from these rows.

To facilitate the assembly of parts into one sheet, non-adhesive interlining is available for sale, which already has a grid of squares and triangles for patchwork.

In order to save time, it is also advised to sew the scraps without basting, directly along the pin chips. Try to do the basting with contrasting color threads so that it is clearly visible.

    Sew the fabric

If you are using loose fabric (which is not recommended when using the patchwork technique for beginners), be sure to finish the edges of the pieces using an overlocker or by hand.

Depending on what you are going to sew, you can make butt or overlap seams. Craftsmen often use a contrasting color over the seams. And sometimes the seam itself is made in a decorative style.

    Let's decorate the kitchen!

The patchwork technique is ideal for creating colorful kitchen items. For beginners, potholders will probably be the most successful training in this technique.

When choosing fabric for them, do not forget about the overall color scheme of your kitchen. It is important that even such a small detail harmonizes well with it.

For relief and functionality, make a pad of batting or padding polyester between the tack cloths. In total, you will need 8 squares of the selected fabric with a side of 10 cm. For edging the product, you can buy ready-made trim or a satin ribbon.

    Instructions for sewing potholders

    1. Fold the flaps in pairs and stitch together. Then iron them thoroughly.
    2. Sew each pair of patches together and iron again. This way you will get two finished canvases consisting of four patches.
    3. Fold them with the wrong sides facing each other, and place batting or padding polyester between them.
    4. Pin the entire product together and make stitches over the connecting lines of the patches.
    5. After this, trim the edges with tape, not forgetting to make a loop out of it. To do this, you need to add 8 cm to the total length and start processing the edge of the potholder from the corner so that, when finished, make a loop from the remaining tail.

Your fun and dressy patchwork pot holder for beginners is ready!

Let's start knitting using the patchwork technique

If you have at least basic knitting skills, then this technique is for you. To perform a product in the patchwork style, you need to be able to cast on loops, knit front rows and decrease correctly. During the knitting process, the squares are joined rather than sewn together.

They are made in any color and size. For example, if the width is 15 loops, cast on 31. This is based on the following calculation: 15 (one side) + 15 (other side) + 1 (central - corner of the square).

    Subtleties of knitting in rows

The squares are knitted with knit stitches on both the front and back sides. Decrease every second row (knit the three center stitches together). This is done like this: the first loop is removed, the next two are knitted together with the front one, and then the removed loop is pulled through the knitted one. This way you will get a square.

Don’t forget to simply slip off the first stitch in each row without knitting, and knit the last stitch like everyone else.

After the first square is ready, cast on 15 new loops as usual, and in addition make 16 loops from the edge of the first square: insert the knitting needle over the edge and pull out the loop.

Knit the second square, like the first, making decreases in every second row on the three central loops. By adding new squares, you can knit the desired width of the entire patchwork product. For beginners, it is important to carefully study the rules of knitting the second row.

How to knit the second row correctly

On the upper side, cast on 15 loops and add air stitches made from the working thread (16 pieces) to the knitting needle.

    • Knit the first row of the square without decreasing, and in the second decrease as usual, and then further through the row.
    • The second square of the second row is cast on along the edge of the first row (15 loops) + 1 loop from the corner of the square + 15 loops of the first square of the second row.
    • Knit all other rows in the same way, repeating the principle of the second row.

So in the end you will get a bright, original blanket or cover for a chair.

Imagine, the patchwork technique provides great opportunities for this! I wish you success!

Evidence of ancient people engaging in this type of activity dates back to 980 BC.

    A little history

Of course, then no one thought to call the possibility of repairing clothes or creating new ones from the remnants of old ones with the now fashionable word patchwork. The ideas of that time were also very different from modern ones and had completely different meanings. After all, patchwork is sewing from scraps. And if now, to create a certain color of a product, a craftswoman buys whole pieces of new fabric in the appropriate store, then previously such things were obtained not out of a whim, but primarily out of desperation, and only thanks to the innate desire for beauty in a person, the finished items had an aesthetic appearance .

Old clothes were altered many times, and multi-colored patches were placed on the holes. It is unlikely that primitive people could have thought that centuries later patchwork, the ideas for creating which essentially belonged to them, would be so popular, and that someone would specifically buy and cut new fabric in order to create something original from the scraps. Over time, patchwork became one of the types of American folk art and, thanks to the love of this people for travel, gradually penetrated into the countries of Europe and Asia. It is worth noting that today in each country the patchwork style has its own original distinctive features that are characteristic of only one nation.

Not everything is as simple as it seemed

Patchwork, the technique of which at first glance seems elementary (they say, what could be easier than sewing multi-colored scraps of fabric together), actually requires quite a lot of time and labor. In addition to good creative inclinations that allow you to invent, model, and then bring to life a certain pattern, ornament or mosaic, you need to have at least an average level of sewing skills. Connecting individual pieces together so that they hold well and look neat is sometimes very difficult even for an experienced seamstress.

The main stages of working in patchwork style

Patchwork technique consists of three main stages:

    1) selection of material;

    2) creating a diagram and sketches of the future product;

    3) connecting the shreds into a single fabric.

    Basics of patchwork technique

Practicing masters of this type of needlework say that for each new product in the patchwork style, ideas usually come while looking through and selecting scraps of fabric with a similar texture. From these, the main drawing is compiled, and the necessary parts are purchased in the store. Of course, the opposite also happens. First, fabric of the main color is purchased from the store, and then the pattern is complemented by existing pieces of fabric.

If you have little experience in performing work in the patchwork style, the technique of which is quite complex, it is better to first use already ready-made diagrams, which can be easily found on the pages of handicraft magazines and other information resources on relevant topics. Then the flaps are first sewn together into separate blanks, these parts are fastened together, and at the end of the work a lining is sewn to the canvas, the main purpose of which is to hide all errors, seams and the filler used in the product.

    Don't forget the tools

If you still decide that this type of needlework suits you, or you have an irresistible desire to create something exclusive for yourself or as a gift to loved ones, then before you start working in the patchwork style, the technique of which is unique (which means you can declare with an absolute guarantee , that no one will have a second such thing), be sure to prepare all the tools necessary for the work. Of course, these should be threads, pins and needles, scissors, a sewing machine (if the plans are grandiose), as well as chalk or a pencil, ruler, cardboard or thick paper for creating a pattern, crochet hook or knitting needles. Very often in stores of the corresponding profile you can already find ready-made kits for patchwork, including suitable materials, a diagram for the pattern, as well as all the necessary tools.

    Grandma's handicraft

Most often, handmade craftswomen in our country choose a bedspread from the variety of crafts in the style we are considering. Patchwork is perfect for creating such a thing.
