• Family coat of arms paper applique. Family symbols and their meaning. How to Draw a Family Crest, Step by Step Tutorial

    20.12.2020

    We draw a coat of arms and a flag for the family: choose colors, shapes, mottos. Step-by-step instruction.

    The coat of arms is an identifier of clan, family and personality. In the Middle Ages, not a single worthy family could do without a coat of arms. Subsequently, they tried to destroy the presence of coats of arms, statuses and much more and make everyone equal and not stand out. But if you are reading this article, it means that the “gray mass” is not interesting to you, and you, inspired by the experience of our ancestors, or historical series, decided to create your own coat of arms.

    Having drawn your family's coat of arms, you can place it on family T-shirts and sweatshirts, holiday cards, on your pages on social networks, as well as on the doors of your home, and even your garage. And let your friends envy you, because your family is special!

    Like creation family tree, the process of creating a coat of arms is interesting and multifaceted. You will need to show your imagination and combine the incompatible in one place! After all, the family is so multifaceted and still whole and dear!

    So let's get started. Let's choose what we will depict: Family Coat of Arms or Personal Coat of Arms. In both cases, we must graphically express the desires, views and foundations of the owners of the coat of arms, as well as their place in society and life values.

    Heraldry is the science of drawing up coats of arms and it can be studied for years, but we have highlighted the main points from this science for a superficial study of this issue, as well as the elementary concepts of drawing up a coat of arms.

    Don’t try to draw the coat of arms right away, first take a rough draft and make a diagram, then cut out all the parts and try to rearrange them in order to achieve maximum effect.

    We choose the shape of the coat of arms: national or geometric.

    Choose the color of the coat of arms. The color will reflect the quality of the soul, a natural phenomenon, the direction that a family or individual follows, and much more. We present only a brief meaning of the main colors; if you wish, you can find and get acquainted with the full list of colors and shades and their meanings in heraldry.

    Please note that the coat of arms can be monochromatic or contain up to six colors! It all depends on your imagination, as well as what you want to express in your coat of arms.

    We select the figures that will be located on the coat of arms. There are only eight main heraldic figures and each of them can be located in an exclusively designated place, and must be proportional to the coat of arms.

    There are many secondary heraldic figures. They can be located in different places, and also be in different proportions.

    Non-heraldic figures in the form of people, animals, insects and birds carry a certain symbolism and from them one can determine the general character and direction of a family or individual. Artificial (tools, weapons, things) and mythical (unicorns, dragons) influence no less, and sometimes more, than the previous symbols.

    Symbolism of some figures:

    • Falcon - courage, sharp mind, learning, etc.;
    • Leo - generosity, authority, wisdom, courage;
    • Brown bear - wisdom and strength;
    • Snake - wisdom, intuition, precaution;
    • Eagle - independence, strength and power;
    • Dog - devotion to one’s family and clan, loyalty to one’s word;
    • Dove - purity, innocence, spirituality;
    • The Rooster is a fighter;
    • Bee - hard work, ability to accumulate;
    • Dragon - power;
    • An open book - knowledge;
    • Torch - secret knowledge;
    • Oak, oak leaf - strength and durability;
    • Palm and laurel branches represent victory and glory respectively.

    We choose a motto. This lie of several words can be either unique or a quote from great sages. This short slogan contains the entire credo of an individual, family or organization. As an example, here are several famous mottos, some of them shorter or longer due to translation from other languages.

    Now that we have sorted out all the parts of the coat of arms and you, most likely, have already sketched out a drawing of the future coat of arms several times, we suggest that you practice and draw your coat of arms, and we will tell you how to do it step by step.

    We took the shape of a shield as a sample, but you draw the one you decided on. We recommend drawing weak, barely visible lines with a firmly soft pencil, so that after finishing the work you can erase the excess and apply paint beautifully.

    We decided that our motto will be located at the bottom of the coat of arms, and not under the symbol, so we draw a ribbon along the coat of arms. If the coat of arms implies several figures, then it is still better to place the motto under the coat of arms. We pursue minimalism.

    After this, we draw guides for the font along the inside of the tape. If you have calligraphy experience, everything is easier. If not, draw both horizontal and vertical guides for each letter.

    We will enter the surname “Mayeda”, which, according to the bearer, speaks for itself! And you must agree, this is a reason to be proud! It consists of 6 letters, and dividing it is not difficult. The motto must be divided in advance and the words marked on the tape so that the middle of the phrase coincides with the middle of the vertical line of the coat of arms.

    Regarding fonts, you can invent your own, unique one, but we chose the classic “Roman” style, which is often used for logos in retro style Worldwide. Study fonts, maybe don't reinvent something someone else has already done. And this is another evening, and maybe more than one, when you will once again delve into this incredibly interesting science.

    We are the founders of a new family coat of arms amazing parents who have achieved a lot in life and founded a new family name, place, business. Therefore, their names are located in the center - the names of those who laid the foundation for future generations.

    Now let's decide what we will decorate with: ink, pencils, markers or paints? You can make multiple copies and decorate them differently by choosing the best option. We decided to combine watercolor and ink.

    We draw most of the details and let it dry.

    We connect the work of the pen.

    Video: A little about symbols, coats of arms and signs

    The development of family and corporate coats of arms (i.e., coats of arms for individuals, organizations and enterprises) is one of the activities of the International Institute of Genealogical Research, which is natural, given the close connection between genealogy and heraldry. Unlike numerous companies offering services of this kind, the institute is not an intermediary between customers and performers; its specialists work directly, which leads to relatively low prices for developments.

    Interest in heraldry, especially family heraldry, arose in last decades, is not an accident, but a natural phenomenon, directly related to the increased self-awareness of a significant part of our compatriots. The coat of arms is not just a beautiful picture, it is evidence of the originality of a person and the uniqueness of his personality, symbolizes the unity and solidarity of the family, a person’s sense of belonging to a certain community or place, and serves as a unique graphic means of identifying both an individual and the entire family as a whole.

    These properties of coats of arms explain the high demands of customers, and therefore our responsible and strictly individual approach to the development of each coat of arms and the thoroughness of its composition and artistic execution.

    Corporate coats of arms, unlike family ones, mainly perform information and advertising functions, so their development is carried out according to a different principle and also requires an equally responsible approach.

    The guarantee of the quality of our work is 25 years of experience in the field of practical heraldry, i.e. the creation of coats of arms, and the professional training of our artists.

    Creating a coat of arms is difficult creative process, requiring deep knowledge of the theoretical foundations of heraldry, the history of heraldry, heraldic features and traditions of various states, auxiliary disciplines such as symbolism, emblems, mythology, history of weapons, religion, costume, uniformology, faleristics, etc., as well as extraordinary skill heraldic artists. This is a job for professionals, which, unfortunately, is not known or realized by numerous amateurs who are trying to pass off their coat-of-arms crafts as full-fledged coats of arms.

    During our work, we have created and used the information base necessary for successful emblem-making activities, which is constantly updated and expanded due to new developments in Russia and countries near and far abroad - we try to adopt new original ideas that can be applied in professional activities.

    The use of this base should not be taken literally - all elements of the coat of arms, even when executed on a computer, are depicted manually, the computer serves only as an auxiliary technical tool.

    Dear visitor to the site, every person has the right to own a coat of arms, regardless of his nationality, gender, age, religion, official or property status, membership in a political party or social group. Contact us and we will help you exercise this right.

    Components of the coat of arms

    The coat of arms consists of a heraldic shield and external attributes of the coat of arms.

    Heraldic shield- the main and mandatory (sometimes the only) element of the coat of arms, distinguishing the coat of arms from any other emblem and bearing the main symbolic load, close in configuration to real-life shields or created artificially for the purpose of optimal arrangement of figures. The real shield was one of the types of military protective equipment, designed to repel attacks from cold or small arms and at the same time serve to identify a knight in battle or in a tournament.

    External attributes of the coat of arms represent the traditional components of the coat of arms surrounding the shield (usually an individual crown, a helmet with a neck kleynod on a neck chain or ribbon, a burelet, a helmet kleynod, a mantle and a motto ribbon with a motto), optional, but corresponding to the domestic heraldic tradition, depicted according to certain rules and in most cases having specific semantic meanings.

    Individual conditional non-noble crown, compiled specifically for each specific coat of arms, consists of a hoop and stylized teeth and precious and (or) ornamental stones(jewels). It should be noted that non-noble crowns serve to complement or enhance the symbolic meanings of the figures of the coat of arms and have nothing to do with rank crowns - an accessory of noble coats of arms.

    Helmet It is a metal head armor and part of the breast armor connected to it, traditionally decorated with a gold incised pattern (notch). A neck chain or ribbon is placed on the neck part of the helmet, on which a neck kleynod (medallion) is suspended - as a rule, an identifying feature of the modern Russian coat of arms.

    Stormbreaker called a round wreath, visible from the side and consisting of interconnected turns - flagella made of fabric, stuffed with wool, which served to attach a real mantle to a real helmet.

    Helmet Kleinod(crest) - a figure located on a burelet and crowning a helmet. The crest originally represented the main figure of the shield, any figure, including a fantastic one, or a decorative plume of feathers, usually peacock or ostrich, and served, along with the shield, to identify the knight or as a decoration for the helmet.

    By basting are called ornamental decorations of any configuration that extend from under the burelet to the sides of the helmet. Initially, the mantle was a cloak worn on the helmet of a crusader knight for protection from the sun's rays in the hot climate of Palestine and cut in battles with saber blows. Subsequently, the image of this cloak was stylized in various ways.

    Motto, placed on motto ribbon, usually represents a short saying that reveals or complements the main idea of the coat of arms.

    The listed external attributes, if necessary, can be supplemented by figures placed behind the shield (swords, anchors, banners, etc.), orders on order chains or ribbons, monograms and other images characterizing the family or personality of the coat of arms holder.

    To reflect high social status in the coat of arms, it is possible to depict shield holders and two or more helmets in the coat of arms.

    The social status of the coat of arms holder in modern conditions is an ambiguous concept and can hardly be objectively determined, so the customer himself determines his social status and in accordance with it makes a decision on the presence of shield holders and two or more helmets. The cost of making a coat of arms in this case increases precisely for this reason, and not because of the additional work of the artist.

    Shield holders, that is, the figures supporting the shield on the sides are prototypes of real squires and pages who were at the shields of their knights during tournaments and often dressed in costumes depicting real or fantastic people and animals. The presence of shield holders, in addition to indicating a high social status, makes it possible to more fully reflect the given symbolism of the coat of arms.

    Shield holders are installed on foothills coat of arms, usually an ornamental image on which a motto ribbon with the motto is placed.

    External attributes, the use of which is permissible in noble coats of arms and is regulated by the title of the clan or coat of arms holder - rank crowns, helmets made of precious metals and mantles, can only be used when drawing up the corresponding coats of arms.

    Registration of coats of arms

    There is no state registration of family and corporate coats of arms in Russia. By analogy with most heraldic-developed foreign countries, the practice of registering coats of arms in the armorial books of heraldic organizations has been adopted. Coats of arms registered in this way are absolutely legitimate.

    Ordering a coat of arms and its development

    The order of a coat of arms and its execution are carried out according to a certain scheme that has developed during heraldic activity, although in some cases deviations are possible due to the timing of the order or the composition of the external attributes of the coat of arms and options for their depiction.

    To order a coat of arms, the customer, having read the price list, fills out and submits questionnaire for the customer of the family coat of arms or questionnaire for the customer of the corporate coat of arms. In accordance with the questionnaire, a working sketch of the shield or coat of arms as a whole is drawn up, one or more options, depending on the information in the questionnaire. The sketch is sent to the customer, if necessary, with a brief explanation of the symbolism, to assess the visual perception of the future coat of arms.

    At this stage, it is possible to change the figures of the coat of arms or their number, up to a complete reworking of the sketch.

    After agreeing on the final sketch, the Contract for the production of a family coat of arms or Contract for the production of a corporate coat of arms.

    The execution of the Agreement begins after its signing in accordance with the terms of the Agreement. The execution period is usually one month.

    It should be noted once again that the computer execution of the coat of arms does not involve the use of ready-made heraldic clipart; each element of the coat of arms is drawn manually, and the computer is used only as an auxiliary tool for scaling figures, uniformly coloring the fields, giving the coat of arms a volumetric effect, etc.

    Minor changes to the composition of the coat of arms during the validity of the Agreement are made on a routine basis; if there are changes and additions that require actual reworking of the coat of arms, an additional agreement is concluded to extend the validity of the Agreement.

    Additionally, at the request of the customer, an extended explanation of the symbolism of the coat of arms can be drawn up and an image of the coat of arms can be made in vector form.

    After execution of the Contract, all materials provided for in the Contract are transferred to the customer in accordance with Act of acceptance and transfer of a family or corporate coat of arms, i.e.:

    – Full-color artistic computer image of the coat of arms in A4 format;

    – Stamp certificate of the International Institute of Genealogical Research;

    – Certificate of registration of the coat of arms in the Armorial Book of the International Institute of Genealogical Research.

    Additionally, in accordance with the Agreement, it is possible to provide the customer with an image of the coat of arms in vector form on a CD and a brief or complete explanation of the symbolism of the coat of arms

    Practical use of coats of arms

    The practical use of family coats of arms is extremely diverse, although, as a rule, it is limited to household items. The coat of arms can be depicted on bookplates, table settings, furniture, and other interior items of an apartment or house.

    The scope of application of corporate emblems is also very wide. Considering their advertising and representative purpose, coats of arms can be used on business cards, forms, envelopes, seals and stamps, covers of folders and notepads, booklets and prospectuses, badges, award signs and medals, postcards, calendars, pennants, various souvenirs, etc.

    COAT OF ARMS OF THE BELYAEV FAMILY

    The family coat of arms is a family symbol, a moral family heritage. My last name is Belyaeva. As the owner of the surname Belyaeva, I can undoubtedly be proud of my ancestors, who left their mark on the history of Russia. The basis of the Belyaev surname was the secular name Belyai. As a rule, it indicated the appearance of a person: “white” in the meaning of “light, white-faced, blond,” or good, clean, unsullied. We also found the coat of arms of the Belyaevs, which is included in the list of noble families of the All-Russian Empire.

    Symbols on the shield

    Since the surname is based on the word “white,” I had no difficulty choosing the main character. Dove – purity and peace. My mother works as a saleswoman, and my grandmother worked in a meat processing plant all her life, so I drew a bee, it represents hard work.

    Manufacturing technology

    The bear standing on its hind legs with scarlet eyes and tongue is taken from the coat of arms of the Belyaev noble family. The bear also represents wisdom and strength.

    On the sides of the shield I chose olive branches. This is not a random choice. The branches of this tree are a symbol of peace. Since in our family my grandfather is the defender of our Motherland.

    Our family is very friendly. I have a brother and sister. I also depicted us on the coat of arms.

    Conclusion

    While working on the project, I created a coat of arms for my family, learned what coats of arms exist and how they are composed. It was very interesting for me to do this; I learned the history of the coat of arms, how it was used during the times of chivalry. I will try to keep this coat of arms for my family.

    The family coat of arms is an image that is a symbol and at the same time an expression of views, showing the attitude of relatives to life. Children at school are often given the task of drawing such a picture, since it develops logical thinking, Creative skills and artistic skills.

    There is a special science that studies coats of arms - heraldry. Drawings of the coat of arms can also be used to decorate the house, for example, hung at the entrance to the apartment. Joint development of the concept of such an emblem is exciting activity, which will allow parents and children to spend time together and usefully.

    The family coat of arms is not just a beautiful drawing. First of all, this is an image of everything that loved ones strive for, what rules and principles they live by, what they value in life. A coat of arms made in accordance with all the rules of heraldry is a set special characters, which reveals the essence of a group of people, in in this case families.

    He is able to unite people and set them apart from the rest. Many, after a successful attempt to draw such an emblem, begin to better understand their family and their place in the lives of loved ones.

    It is advisable that the family coat of arms for the school, like any other, be drawn up taking into account the rules of heraldry. There are special templates that help express information that symbolizes everything that is so important to loved ones. The design is always based on the so-called shield. He may have different shapes, for example, a circle, oval, rhombus, rectangle, or a complex shape with several angles. As a rule, the left and right side shields are symmetrical with each other. Initially, the shield on the emblem was appearance looked very much like a real knight's shield.

    The second component of the family coat of arms is the motto. You can come up with what words will reflect the worldview of the family, and then depict them on the emblem. Usually the motto is placed below the shield. A correctly executed coat of arms should contain elements such as a crest and a helmet. Anything that demonstrates the strength and steadfastness of spirit can be drawn on them. If the family prioritizes gaining knowledge, you can draw a book or an owl peeking out from behind a shield. If sport is a priority, physical development, we advise you to draw medals, a barbell and other sports attributes. It is worth noting that the use of these symbols is not a rule of heraldry.

    Color scheme and symbolism

    Regardless of what templates you use for drawing, you will need to make the choice of the color scheme of the emblem yourself. White color symbolizes purity and the desire for peace. Yellow is the color of the sun. It symbolizes prosperity, generosity, generosity. Red denotes courage, feeling self-esteem, courage. Green is the color of youth, which will show that the family is striving forward, that all its members are young at heart. Blue is a shade of high moral principles, honesty, and decency.

    Usually the shield is painted in one of the specified colors, but there are templates that allow you to use several colors at once if they are equally important to the family. For example, you can draw a wide stripe in the center and paint it with a different color. You can divide the shield into 3 - 4 parts, each of which will be painted in a different color to symbolize different virtues.

    You can draw animals on the coat of arms:

    • the bear will symbolize strength;
    • owl - wisdom;
    • dove - peace and purity;
    • Leo – power and generosity;
    • dog - devotion;
    • dragon - power;
    • bee - love of work;
    • swan - love for family members.

    Drawing tools

    The choice of tools depends entirely on skill. Of course, the most beautiful images are obtained when using paints. But parents do not always have the artistic ability to help their child make a high-quality drawing. You can use markers, which are much easier to work with.

    Certainly the most beautiful drawings obtained on whatman paper. They allow you not only to draw a coat of arms, but also to fill the remaining space with other important elements, for example, drawings of family members, a surname written in large calligraphic font, or a family tree.

    The family coat of arms is a symbol that represents all the virtues that are valuable to people. It distinguishes a family from others, allowing others to understand what values are preached among loved ones. We recommend using templates that make it easy and quick to create an image of such a logo.
