    All mechanisms are divided into two main groups: quartz and mechanical.

    Quartz (QUARTZ)

    The principle of operation is based on the ability of a quartz crystal to produce pulses with a certain frequency when an electric current passes through it.

    Quartz analog (pointer)

    • Quartz Precision
    • Reliability (better withstand kinetic impacts)
    • Thinner than mechanical
    • Easy maintenance (battery replacement (3 to 10 years))
    • Long service life
    • Possibility of producing multifunctional clocks (date, day of the week, moon calendar, alarm)

    Quartz liquid crystal

    • Has the same characteristics as quartz analog
    • Digital display
    • Possibility of accommodation a large number information at the same time (usually a sports watch)

    Quartz combined

    • Combined mechanism
    • Analog and liquid crystal indication.
    • Combination of two clocks in one building. Basically it is a sports watch, which when saving classical form carry the function of sports due to the presence of a second display with digital indication.

    Quartz with the use of alternative energy sources - AUTOQUARTZ and ECO-DRIVE.

    In the first case, use kinetic energy rotation of the pendulum, as in a mechanical self-winding watch, which turns into an electric one, accumulates in a container and drives a quartz movement. In the second - the transformation of light energy. These fairly new technologies have emerged from the need to use environmentally friendly energy sources.

    Mechanical

    Here it makes sense to mention why mechanical watches are considered more prestigious than quartz ones. If we consider not serial movements, but unique in their design, then we can talk about accuracy and functionality (high accuracy of movement, the ability to measure segments of 1/10 of a second (36,000 oscillations per hour), excessive winding (50 hours), and the subtlety of the mechanism - 6.5 mm). But the special properties of this mechanism must be evaluated accordingly (expensive watch).

    Self-winding mechanics

    The rotor from vibrations when wearing the watch winds up the spring, which in turn rotates the movement. There is an indication of the date and day of the week.

    • case thickness
    • the need to flush and adjust the mechanism every two years
    • low accuracy up to +/- 15 minutes per month
    • reduced impact resistance
    • strong sensitivity to magnetic fields
    • "live" clock
    • ride

    Mechanics with manual winding

    The spring is wound not with the help of a rotor, but manually, as a rule, once a day. The characteristics are the same as those of the automatic movement, except that this movement may be thinner due to the lack of a pendulum. It is now found and produced less and less.

    Chronometer

    Accurate mechanical watch certified by the Swiss Chamber of Weights and Measures, accompanied by an official certificate of conformity from this body. A certificate with test data is issued for each watch.

    Mechanical chronograph

    Stopwatch with automatic winding or manual winding.

    A fairly complex mechanism, especially if it is multifunctional and "stowed" in a thin case. Usually expensive watches.

    The invention of the chronograph dates back to 1720, when an English watchmaker by the name of Graham created the first watch that could measure a segment with an accuracy of 1/16 of a second. In 1831, the split chronograph was invented - a watch with a stopwatch that has the function of an intermediate finish. The chronograph, whose working principles have remained unchanged to this day (switching on, stopping and returning to zero), was developed by Adolphe Nicole in 1862. From that time until the middle of our century, about 400 inventions were made to improve the operation of the chronograph mechanism.

    Chronographs became widespread with the development of aeronautics and sports. Due to the increasing demands on chronographs, the fly-back chronograph was invented. A compass and a watch are used for air navigation on small planes. When moving in the air corridors, the pilot must follow a given compass direction for a given period of time. When changing course, he needs a new countdown. At high flight speeds and low altitude, the fastest possible changeover of the chronometer with a minimum number of movements is required. For this, the fly-back function was invented, which allows the chronograph to be reset simultaneously with the start of a new countdown. This uses only one push of a button, unlike a standard chronograph, which requires two pushes. Such chronographs were first produced for the German aviation in the 30s by the Swiss companies Hanhart and Tutima.

    Around 1910, a manual chronograph was created. In general, the development of wristwatches and chronographs as a type of wristwatch went one after another. Innovations in the production of wristwatches quickly appeared in the production of chronographs. The advent of waterproof watches in 1930 led to the production of waterproof chronographs in 1933. The same thing happened with the advent of anti-magnetic watches. Although there were exceptions. In the 1930s and 1940s, self-winding watches were widely developed. But the combination of automatic winding with a chronometer and, moreover, the mass production of automatic chronographs was impossible due to the technical problems that existed at that time. For example, Lemania = one of the largest manufacturers of watch movements, developed an automatic chronograph already in 1947, but its mass production never began. As a result, over the next 20 years, until 1965, there were no significant changes in the production of automatic chronographs.

    In 1965, an Association of Buren-Hamilton, Breitling, Dubois-Depraz and Heuer-Leonidas was formed to solve the problem of combining a chronograph movement with a self-winding watch movement. As a result, on March 3, 1969, the first automatic chronograph was presented, the presentation of which took place simultaneously in Geneva, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Beirut. The new Caliber 11 was named Chronomatic (from chrono graph and auto matic). He worked with a frequency of 19,800 vibrations per hour. The Chronomatic was produced from 1969–1972.

    Then the Caliber 12 was invented, with a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. Example - Jean Marcel with a function fly back. The most important function of this chronograph is called "reverse flight" ("retour en vol" or in English "fly back"), which allows you to return the central seconds hand to zero with one press of the second (lower) button of the chronograph and start counting again. In a conventional chronograph, this operation takes place in two stages: first, the hand is stopped using the stop button, and then with another button, it is forced to return to its original position. To start measuring again, press the first button again. Thus, three button presses are required for a new measurement. When using a chronograph with the "flyback" function, the hand returns to zero and immediately starts a new measurement with a single press of the button located at the bottom. This function is necessary when carrying out several different, consecutive measurements, during which time delays between these measurements are undesirable.

    Types of mechanisms

    Classical- as a rule, only arrows; slim body, intended for everyday use or going out. There are models with date and day of the week. Both mechanical and quartz movements are used.

    Multifunctional

    • chronograph
    • sports chronograph sports watch (with altimeter, depth gauge, increased water resistance, etc.)
    • lunar calendar clock
    • watch with additional functions (alarm clock)
    • engineering masterpieces - perpetual calendars, the position of the earth relative to the sun, the universe, tourbillon and the like.

    Wristwatch - a device worn on the wrist, displays the current time, some models have a calendar, barometer, pedometer, compass.

    According to the principle of action are divided into:

    • mechanical,
    • electronic,
    • quartz.

    Types and types of watches

    The first criterion when choosing a watch is the type of mechanism.

    Quartz (electromechanical)

    The operation of the mechanism is based on quartz - quartz sets the step frequency of the stepper micromotor, which drives the arrows. It is mainly used for the manufacture of women's products, as they are small and there is no room for the mechanism.

    They are accurate and are characterized by a democratic price. There are also expensive quartz models made of precious metals. The peculiarity is that they do not need to be started, it is enough to change the battery every two or three years.

    Electronic

    This is a kind of quartz movement, that is, the heart of the models is quartz, but unlike quartz watches, the step frequency is set not to a stepper motor, but to a generator that sends signals to the microprocessor. The main difference is the digital display, where the time and other indicators of additional functions are displayed on the display.

    Electronic clocks are popular - inexpensive and show the exact time. There are models in which the time is indicated by "arrows" (electronic dial).

    Mechanical

    Mechanical models - the mechanism works on the principle of a gearbox. The watch is powered by the compression of the spring and its gradual deployment. Unwinding, the spring drives the gears, the accuracy of time and service life depends on the material used in the manufacture of the gears, and the crystals on which they are fixed (stones).

    In elite watches, the documentation indicates the number of stones in the mechanism, precious stones are used, in budget models, artificial material is used.

    The product is started with a head located on the body. Mechanical watches do not need to be changed or any power source.

    Service life reaches 50 years. It is enough to start them at the right time.

    Characteristics of the watch

    Anti-reflective glass coating

    Anti-reflective glass improves the visual perception of the dial or electronic display. Ordinary glass reflects light, creates glare. Anti-reflective coating solves this problem - it is a durable product, it will take a lot of effort to break it.

    In budget models, the glass is covered with a film with an anti-reflective function. The disadvantage is that the coating comes off over time.

    Water tightness and tightness classes

    Resistance to moisture and dirt is determined by the tightness of the accessory. The water resistance of the accessory is made due to rubber seals, over time (3-4 years) they dry out and need to be replaced. Moisture and dirt do not get into such products, which increases the life of the mechanism and its accuracy.

    Moisture resistance is usually accompanied by impact resistance of the glass and case.

    And in simple classic accessories, this characteristic is not uncommon. Their tightness class is lower, but sufficient for everyday wear.

    The water resistance ratings of the models are displayed on the back of the product or at the bottom of the dial.
    They are measured in atmospheres (ATM), which is not equivalent to immersion meters:

    There are five classes of water resistance:

    • Class 1- the product simply indicates that they are water resistant (water resistant) without indicating atmospheres and meters - the internal elements are equipped with seals, but are not sufficiently protected from moisture penetration. The mechanism is protected from dust, moisture and dirt, but is not intended for swimming, diving, bathing in the shower or bath, accidentally falling into the water - in such models you can gently wash your hands.
    • Class 2- 3 atm (30 m). The product is allowed to wash hands and get exposed to rain. However, swimming and bathing in the shower is not allowed.
    • Class 3- 5 atm (50 m). The 3rd class withstands immersion in water to a depth of 30 cm. After swimming in salty sea water, the product must be washed with fresh water and dried, but not on a heater, but in a natural way. It is impossible to dive in such models.
    • Class 4- 10 atm (100 m). The device is designed for those who like to dive with a tube. Scuba diving is not recommended.
    • Class 5- 20, 30 atm (200-300 m). Designed for divers. They are able to withstand water pressure for 3 hours. The case is shock-resistant, the mechanism is protected from penetration of dirt and moisture.

    Energy source

    Applicable types of power supplies:

    • Batteries;
    • Solar panels;
    • Kinetic rotor charging the battery, built into the quartz movement;
    • Mechanical spring winding, with or without automatic winding.

    Batteries for quartz accessories are changed once every 2-3 years. Solar panels last a long time, as they receive energy from daylight.

    Accumulators (kinetic-rotor) - the principle of operation is similar to automatic winding in a mechanical watch, but rotating, the rotor does not cock the mechanical spring, but generates electricity by recharging the battery.

    Mechanical accessories receive energy from the winding of the spring using the head. It is located at the end of the case. Many models are equipped with automatic winding, that is, the mechanism is wound up by hand movement.

    Total weight of the precious metal

    It is not uncommon for consumers to believe that gold-plated items should be accompanied by an indication of the total weight of the gold. However, this is not quite true.

    Watches made of solid gold and gilded should not be confused. On gold-plated or silver-plated models, the total weight of the precious metal is not marked.

    Gilding is applied to the body of the product by electroplating, that is, gold, silver or platinum are present partially in the form of sputtering. In this case, the manufacturer indicates the thickness of the coating and the sample in the documentation, but these indicators are not always indicated - it depends on the manufacturer.

    Accessories made of solid gold, silver or platinum are accompanied by stamps from the manufacturer and the institution that accepted the goods at customs if they were imported from another country. The manufacturer indicates the total weight of the precious metal, excluding precious stones.

    Shockproof

    Shock resistance means the protection of the main elements of the mechanism from shaking during / after the impact.

    The presence of shock resistance is indicated by the manufacturer on the cover and in the accompanying documentation. The mechanism protection includes the type of glass and case material - mineral glass, sapphire, plastic or titanium.

    Skeleton

    Skeleton is a design solution that is typical only for mechanical models. However, there are also quartz models with a transparent case. But they don't look that impressive.

    The owner can see the working gears, the device of the mechanism is visible. Elements of the mechanism are often decorated with precious stones, ornaments are applied.

    When choosing skeletons, you should pay attention to the type of glass and impact resistance. These factors affect the life of the product and its safety. The sapphire glass is scratch-resistant and stays “clean” for a long time. For a skeleton, this is a must, as scratched glass will ruin the overall look.

    Time display method

    Display ways:

    • Analog - arrows;
    • Digital;
    • Combined;
    • Binary.

    analog is the classic way of displaying. It is characteristic of mechanical watches, as well as quartz ones. Expensive models are more often produced with an analog version.

    Digital- typical only for electronic. These are inexpensive models and are often accompanied by additional features.

    Combined– assumes both analog and digital display. Typical for quartz watches.

    Binary– hours and minutes are displayed as luminous dots, sticks or geometric shapes a certain color is assigned for each hour - suitable for lovers of puzzles.

    Glass - type and strength

    Applicable types of glass:

    • plastic glass;
    • Sapphire;
    • Mineral.

    plastic- a common and inexpensive option. In the manufacture of watches, plastic is used, the type of which depends on the purpose - for sports and children's models, plastic with a high degree of impact resistance is used, in budget models, organic glass is used.

    Sapphire glass- made from artificially grown crystal. Only a diamond will scratch a sapphire glass. Increased resistance to mechanical damage does not mean that it will withstand any load. Sapphire glass, as a rule, is inserted into the case of expensive models.

    mineral glass- popular in watchmaking. It is a durable material that resists scratches with a high degree of impact resistance. Accessory with mineral glass is not inferior to models with sapphire material.

    Reliable and practical glass shape - flat, not convex. Such glass is easy to change, it better resists external influences.

    Travel accuracy

    Under the accuracy of the course, they mean an error per day or month. There are approved error standards for mechanical and quartz watches.

    For mechanical models, the error is ±40/60 sec. per day. If the error is outside the established limits, you should contact the master to adjust the stroke accuracy.

    Quartz - error ± 20 sec. per month and are considered one of the most accurate, applies to electronic models.

    The manufacturer in the documentation for the product indicates the error of the model, it is easy to check it yourself, for example, synchronize the clock with the exact time site and track deviations.

    Chronometer

    The word "chronometer" is used as a synonym for the term "watch", but "chronometer" is a product with high precision, an error of ± 3 sec / day.

    Clock face

    There are 3 types of dials:

    • turnout;
    • combined (mixed);
    • digital;

    and four types of markup:

    • Arabic
    • Roman
    • combined (mixed)
    • labels

    Sometimes manufacturers, instead of classic Arabic or Roman numerals, embed creative various images into the dial.

    The combined dial is used in quartz models - there are classic hands and an electronic digital display.

    Tags are used in mechanical and quartz models - in the form of sticks, dots without indicating the digital values of hours or minutes.

    Depending on the manufacturer and model, additional dials are built into mechanical and quartz watches, up to 3 pcs. for different time zones - so when traveling to another country or region, the user does not have to adjust the time.

    Second hand

    The seconds indicator is located either on the main dial, or placed on a separate one. The arrow is built into both mechanical and quartz models. In electronic accessories, seconds are displayed in numbers.

    Wristwatch Functions

    Automatic winding

    With its help, you do not have to constantly start the mechanism with the head. The accessory is wound up automatically from the movement of the hand by a kinetic rotor.

    Disadvantages - the bulkiness of the product. Automatic winding is a complex mechanism that takes up a lot of space in the case. Its presence automatically makes the frame thicker and heavier.

    The minus affects women's accessories in an undesirable way, for this reason, manufacturers do not produce self-winding mechanical models for women.

    GPS

    Modern watch models have a built-in GPS system. She tracks the location, builds routes, remembers the route.

    Detailed atlases are loaded into a wrist gadget. The display shows a map with latitude and longitude indicators, arrows indicate the path, color resolution limited to 100 dpi.

    Accessories are divided into categories:

    • Children's watch-trackers with a navigator;
    • Sports watch with GPS;
    • GPS and compass;

    Alarm clock and vibrator

    The alarm clock in a mechanical watch is a vibrator - it works from a separate cocking drum, as a result of which the models are bulky and heavy, in quartz models they use a piezo speaker - a squeaker. In electronic models, the alarm clock works, as in quartz ones.

    Electronic products based on Android are inextricably linked with a smartphone. A whole system for raising a person in the morning has been developed here. The device calculates the phases of sleep and wakes up when it is easier for a person to wake up.

    The whole science of sleep is embedded in Android-based wrist alarm clocks. The accessory tactfully awakens by vibration. If the person does not wake up, a melody starts to sound.

    The vibration signal function is confused with an alarm clock. Although, in fact, the characteristics are similar. Vibrate signal is a function in the watch for those who need to do something during the day at a given time. For example: athletes who have the entire regime scheduled by the minute until eating.

    The vibration signal is configured according to the principle of setting an alarm clock. The alarm is triggered at exactly the right time. Vibration intensity varies depending on the model. This function is used as an alarm clock. But keep in mind that the vibration signal is lower in intensity than sounds.

    Perpetual calendar and moon phase indicator

    The function appeared after the possibility of displaying the date in a wristwatch, based on the Gregorian or Hebrew calendars - solar and lunar. The clock displays information about leap years, quarters, the number of days in a month.

    Together with the chronology, the lunar calendar is built into the mechanism - it indicates what phase the Earth's satellite is in.

    Built-in memory

    It is used to store and transfer a small amount of information - it works on the principle of a flash drive, but in the form of a clock. The mechanism is equipped with a mini-USB port at the end of the case.

    Often watches with GPS are equipped with built-in flash memory with a capacity of 64, 128, 256 and 512 MB. When connected to a PC, they are defined as a standard flash drive, that is, no driver installation is required.

    Second time zone

    In watches with a second time zone, it is standard - a dial, hands, additional functions. However, a scale is applied to the bezel, or the place free from the dial. It shows the main cities in different time zones.

    By simply pressing a button (electronic) or turning a rotary ring (mechanical), which is located on the case, you can instantly determine the time in a different time zone.

    Instead of the names of cities, numbers are put down - designations of time in different parts of the world according to Greenwich Mean Time. The display and operation of the secondary scale varies. The principle of operation of the second time zone is described by the manufacturer in the instructions for the product.

    The scale of the second time zone does not affect the accuracy of the movement - it is an independent mechanism.

    Altimeter

    The function is developed and based on the measurement of atmospheric pressure. Taking into account the fact that pressure fluctuates in one place, the altimeter readings are displayed with a small error - ± 2-3 m, the function is inextricably linked with the barometer readings.

    Pay attention to the type of altimeter - barometric or satellite - is less common, as such models are expensive. Barometric altimeters are more reliable.

    Depth gauge

    Applicable types of depth gauges:

    • Depth gauges operating according to the Boyle-Mariotte law - capillary and piston;
    • Mechanisms that operate on the principle of the Bourdon tube;
    • Membrane;
    • Diaphragm;
    • Strain gauge.

    A membrane depth gauge is considered reliable and accurate. In the first two types of mechanism, the visibility of indicators in the devices is minimal, and in conditions of poor visibility it is difficult to understand the measurements.

    Strain gauge depth gauges have appeared relatively recently and have not yet established themselves as the most reliable. However, even today they have a good accuracy of readings.

    Notebook

    Often, consumers confuse the "Notebook" function with the "Phone Book".

    The first contains much more information, but the amount of total memory depends on the model and its content. A notebook is required for backing up data: passwords, phone numbers.

    Models with this function vary - these are models with a built-in keyboard on the dial or with a slide-out keyboard (Android based ones are equipped with a touch keyboard). The main indicator when choosing an accessory with a notebook is the size of the memory. All information in it is password protected.

    It should be borne in mind that any additional characteristic increases the size of the case and the weight of the watch.

    Power reserve indicator

    Mechanical watches are equipped with a power reserve indicator, with and without automatic winding - made in the form of a scale divided into time intervals.

    The display of indicators on the dial varies, depending on the model and manufacturer.

    The function is built into models, the platoon of which lasts from 3 to 10 days. That is, there are no restrictions on the type of mechanical device. If you constantly forget about winding, the power reserve indicator will become an indispensable assistant in this matter.

    Compass

    The built-in compass is as accurate as the classic version. The module is built either in the case or separately on the belt. The latter method is typical for mechanical models.

    There are compasses that work on the classical principle - magnetic, and electronic - are built into models with GPS - the route indicated by the navigator is displayed using compass indicators, the route is indicated by arrows, and the compass is displayed next to it. This is convenient when hiking - you know where to go and where you are.

    The indicator readings can be seen in the dark thanks to the LED backlight.

    Illuminated display and hands

    Illumination of the dial and hands are divided according to the type of light element:

    • electroluminescent;
    • LED;
    • Light accumulative;
    • tritium based.

    electroluminescent- actuated by an additional button built into the housing. When pressed, the display lights up for a few seconds. The disadvantage of such a backlight is the quick failure of the display.

    LED- These are LEDs built into the dial. They illuminate well, come into action at the touch of an additional button, or equip accessories with automatic LED lighting. Activates as soon as there is not enough light to comfortably view the display.

    Light accumulative- the composition is applied to the hands and indicators of the dial - zinc sulfide or strontium aluminate (characterized by a long service life). The luminous backlight needs to be recharged from a light source.

    Tritium backlight is a small flask filled with gas, which is based on tritium. This chemical element emits radiation, but in doses that are safe for humans. Moreover, the radiation is completely absorbed by the body glass, which is absolutely safe.

    The service life of the backlight is up to 25 years. The Tritium Light function does not have additional buttons and does not need to be charged.

    If the function is needed all the time, then the tritium-based backlight will be the best option.

    Stopwatch and chronograph

    These two functions are often equated, and words are used as synonyms. However, this is not quite true. A stopwatch is a module in which the second hand is connected to the main clock mechanism. That is, when you press the button that stops the second hand, the entire mechanism stops.

    The designations of the dial of devices with a stopwatch are different, they do not look like the classic version.

    A chronograph is a module that is independent of the main mechanism, with the help of which time intervals are counted and the results are recorded. To control the module, two or three buttons are built into the case, depending on the complexity of the indicator.

    A chronograph is a mandatory component in watches for people working in the field of:

    • medicine;
    • Sports;
    • military affairs;
    • Aviation;
    • Marine fleet;
    • Science and research.

    The mechanism is built from one to several arrows - "split chronographs". Due to this, measurements are made simultaneously for two phenomena with different time intervals. Such a complex module is equipped with three control buttons on the case.

    There are models in which for different fields of activity, on chronographs, they apply their own measurement scale.

    tachymeter

    On chronograph watches, the scale is embedded on the outer circle of the case and has the designations 60, 120. Also on such products will be marked “Tachymeter”.

    To start the module, you need to press the button. Once the movement is completed, the result is fixed using another button.

    Additionally, it will be useful for measuring the distance between sound phenomena. For medical workers The chronograph is marked with a scale for measuring pulse and pressure.

    heart rate monitor

    The heart rate monitor tracks your heart rate.

    The main advantages of the function:

    • Heart rate counting;
    • Choose the optimal training mode based on the collected heart rate monitor data;
    • Calculate the optimal time for the recovery of the heartbeat after training;
    • Plan your optimal walking or running distance based on heart rate data.

    The heart rate monitor will also be useful for older people suffering from heart disease.

    radio synchronization

    "Radio Synchronization" is the adjustment of time indicators in wrist accessories based on atomic clock data.

    Information is received by means of a built-in radio module from radio towers installed in different parts of the world (one tower is capable of transmitting a signal at a distance of up to 1,500 km). The module is configured for a one-time operation, then automatic adjustments are made.

    Countdown timer

    The device counts the required number of minutes or hours specified by the user - the function is similar to a stopwatch, but differs in that the countdown timer counts down the specified period of time.

    Many watch models are equipped with several timers - the owner sets and adjusts time intervals with notification of the end of each.

    Thermometer

    Special sensors are built into the watch, which determine the air temperature with a high degree of accuracy.

    The module is activated using a button. By clicking on it, an indicator will be displayed on the dial in the allotted window.

    Pedometer

    Pedometer - displays the number of steps for a certain period of time: hour, day, week. In each watch model, the functionality of this option is significantly different, for example, the absence of saving the results in the form of a report.

    First of all, you should decide on the type of mechanism. This will depend on the type of energy source, battery or manual winding. The accessory must be comfortable to use for you.

    Do not forget that each additional characteristic affects the weight and size of the product. A sports watch with all possible modules is massive and heavy, an office version is light and small.

    When choosing mechanical accessories Special attention is given to the protection of the case and the mechanism itself - impact resistance, water resistance and type of glass. These parameters determine the service life.

    Best Inexpensive Watch Brands for Men

    3 Q&Qs

    Best price
    Country: Japan
    Average price: 3,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.7

    Compared to competing companies, Q&Q is less well-known, but it is she who is completely focused on the production of budget products. This is the case when a low cost gives rise to unintentional moderation, conservatism with a touch of classics or seasoned simplicity. The purchase of such a watch will not be considered in bad taste and for people of "great prosperity", since outwardly almost all of them look rich. A good example of this is the analog version of the Q&Q A436-401 watch with a dial and a bracelet made to look like gold and silver.

    Q&Q also produces a series of rubberized watches designed for outdoor activities and sports: an example for this segment is the Q&Q DG04-001 model.

    Advantages:

    • the company is focused only on the production of budget products;
    • moderate design solutions, often making watches expensive;
    • the presence of a line of sports models.

    Flaws:

    • not detected.

    2 Diesel

    Abundance of original models
    Country: Italy
    Average price: 11,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.8

    The Italian firm puts a lot of emphasis on creativity. The model range of wristwatches from "Diesel" is a solid originality, which is expressed not only in the form of the dial or the materials used, but even in the banal color scheme or filling the space of the chronometer. Here you can find everything from classics on leather straps with a moderate analog dial (a good but expensive example: Diesel DZ1145), ending with very bold concepts like the budget Diesel DZ4310 or digital quartz DZ7187.

    Along with creativity, the company also maintains the good quality of wristwatches. Users (mostly) respond positively to the experience of using their products, however, they note a certain satiation with the appearance that comes after a long time of use.

    Advantages:

    • a variety of models suitable for absolutely any style;
    • sustained quality, corresponding to the status of the company;
    • a large number of budget models.

    Flaws:

    • sometimes creativity is satiating.

    The best watch manufacturers

    The list of the best wrist watch manufacturers is very long, but even from such a variety one can single out the most colorful representatives.

    Rolex. A Swiss company whose name is known even to small children. From time immemorial, it has been producing premium watches worth more than one thousand dollars. Every year, the watch models of this company diverge in the amount of approximately 500 thousand copies.

    hublot. Quite a young watch brand from Switzerland, created specifically for the premium segment. It features a unique design of the dial, for which it has received worldwide fame. The overall style of products is defined as "fusion" - freedom of variation appearance, which combines many directions.

    Casio. Japanese brand, the launch of which took place in 1946. In the manner inherent in the Japanese to adapt to technological trends, the company made a successful attempt to enter the market of mechanical (electronic) watches, where to this day it maintains a strong leading position in the middle and premium segments.

    Citizen. Japanese watches of the middle price segment. They went into production in 1930. A distinctive feature of the company's products is a commitment to the old style, combined with versatility.

    Tissot. The Swiss grand watch manufacturer of medium and premium classes, which is an icon of good taste and status. If Rolex is aimed more at a frilly demonstration of wealth, then Tissot is focused on subtly emphasizing the importance of the owner.

    1 Casio

    The best quality of manufactured products
    Country: Japan
    Average price: 9,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.9

    Casio produces a variety of products aimed at consumers of all income levels. However, in one component they do not occupy: despite such a strong ranking of products by cost, they always achieve from wristwatches if not perfect, then close to it.

    As for the lineup, diversity also prevails here: from classic analog watches like the Casio LIN-169-2A to the "space" Casio Edifice EFR-303D-1A, customized with an interesting dial in the form of a world map and combining the functions of an alarm clock and stopwatch. Today it is perhaps one of the most reliable manufacturers of inexpensive watches for men.

    Advantages:

    • an extensive range;
    • coverage of several price segments at once;
    • high quality products;
    • a large number of interesting design solutions.

    Flaws:

    • not identified.

    The best watches of the middle price segment

    5 Swiss Military Hanowa

    High popularity. Collections for every taste
    Country: Switzerland
    Average price: 11,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.6

    A non-trivial Swiss company, whose history is worthy of retelling and a considerable degree of admiration. Prior to the fundamental change in the concept, this company was called Hanowa, which was formed by a combination of the founder's name (Hans Noll) and the English word "watch". Having existed in this version until the early 90s, the brand managed to make a lot of noise - watches were produced in any way, up to visualization for clips, pendants and small pendants.

    However, the lack of demand forced the company to drastically revise the concept of further development, and after a short pause, a new "classic" player appeared on the market - trademark Swiss Military Hanowa. Produced by the order of the Swiss army, the watches of this company quickly overcame the "professional" barrier, becoming mega-popular among the mass consumer. The main advantages here are the average price level, an abundance of collections (both quartz and electronic), as well as a catchy, laconic design.

    4 Emporio Armani

    Product durability. Huge design variability
    Country: Italy
    Average price: 12,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.7

    Emporio Armani is another trend of the famous Italian designer's activity, which has absorbed the same originality, elegance and sophistication that pervades each new collection of the master's clothes. Initially, this brand had to accept the struggle imposed by electronic (at that time super-popular) wristwatches, the superiority of which could be reversed only by a non-trivial approach to their own production. Armani went in the right direction, choosing as a tactic relying on ancient traditions and the custom of skilled craftsmen who were not afraid to experiment and embody new combinations in miniature products.

    The result of all this was a huge collection of men's watches for every taste - from strict, almost "commander" models to unpretentious and easy-to-perceive fashion designs. Users, in the vast majority, approve of the brand's activities, noting in the reviews an acceptable price and a high degree durability of the finished product.

    3 Orient

    The best line of classic wristwatches
    Country: Japan
    Average price: 20,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.7

    Japanese company founded in 1901. Unlike competitors within its own country, it specializes exclusively in the production of wristwatches, which naturally bears fruit. Production covers all price levels: the starting cost for the models is about five thousand rubles and reaches an impressive one hundred thousand (note: the ORIENT EL02003H model and identical ones). As for the conditional representatives of the middle class, here we can note, in general, a pleasant appearance - the company is much on bold decisions that not everyone likes, but the adherence to the classics in this case turned out to be unshakable. Visual representatives: analog ORIENT EL05002B and ORIENT DE00002W, made in basic steel color. As a result, we have another interesting brand that is popular with domestic users.

    Advantages:

    • coverage of almost all price levels;
    • the predominant classic look of wristwatches.

    Flaws:

    • controversial decisions on the appearance of some model lines.

    2 Citizens

    The best combination of price and quality
    Country: Japan
    Average price: 30,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.8

    Another worthy representative of the Japanese side in the hard work of making watches. As in the case of the leader of the rating, Citizen are among the elite manufacturers of products of the highest quality, but also focused on the middle price segment. This includes models with a more classic look, not distinguished by versatility and bold decisions. A clear example of a representative of the middle segment can be considered Citizen AW1231-07E - a watch on a leather strap with an analog dial, powered by solar batteries. This is a discreet classic, moderately elegant, but very technological and practical. The complete opposite of it is the elite analog model Citizen AS4025-08E, saturated (or even oversaturated) with small chronometer elements. And even if the last example belongs to the premium class, all this objectively reflects the breadth of the model range.

    Advantages:

    • more than 1000 watch models in stock;
    • adapted solar power system;
    • a wide range of prices (from budget to expensive models).

    Flaws:

    • not identified.

    1 Tissot

    Extensive range. Choice of Experts
    Country: Switzerland
    Average price: 28,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 5.0

    Wristwatches from Tissot are positioned by many as representatives of the highest price segment, but this is only partly true. Despite more than a century and a half of the company's history, Tissot has always been distinguished by moderate demands in terms of price (compared to the same Rolex). In turn, users received almost indestructible watch models created to the highest quality standards. In this line you will not find pretentiousness and riot of creativity - everything here is designed in a conservative classical style and is not without a glimmer of luxury. As evidence, we can cite several opposite, but worthy models from an extensive line: a wristwatch on a leather bracelet Tissot T035.617.16.051.00, as well as steel and gold Tissot T031.410.22.033.00 made to match the color scheme.

    Advantages:

    • an interesting lineup with a predominance of calm (not pretentious) luxury and conservative design;
    • compliance with the highest quality standards;
    • virtually indestructible clockwork.

    Flaws:

    • not detected.

    The best premium watches

    4 Vacheron Constantin

    The most titled brand. Unique jewelery finish
    Country: Switzerland
    Average price: 5,000,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.6

    At one time, the owners of products from Vacheron Constantin were Napoleon Bonaparte, Queen Victoria, Alexander II and Princess Diana. The commitment of the royal nobility to this brand is easily explained: at the beginning of the 20th century, it was the first to use precious alloys - palladium, gold and bronze in the production of mechanisms, thereby increasing the accuracy of their movement. At the world's first competition from the Geneva Observatory, the Vacheron watch was recognized as the most accurate and received a gold medal. Soon the company received the right to apply the Hallmark of Geneva to its offspring as a symbol of their technical and aesthetic perfection.

    The masters of the watch house spend from 3 to 6 thousand working hours to create luxury items, and jewelers require 20 thousand at all. There is nothing to say about the quantity and quality of premium materials: for example, for the Kalista watch, it took 140 g of 18k yellow gold and 118 white baguette diamonds of 130 kt. The copy was sold for 5 million dollars, but today it is worth almost 11. This is an example of how an expensive purchase is actually a long-term investment in the future.

    3 Richard Mille

    The most expensive serial watch in the world. The technical complexity of the mechanisms
    Country: France
    Average price: 11,000,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.8

    Among reputable firms with a long history, the young French brand, named after its owner Richard Mille, looks like a daring teenager at an aristocratic reception. He is only 20 years old, and the average cost of one Richard Mille chronometer is 170,000 euros. This is a lot even for the most eminent Swiss manufactories. And what is remarkable, at least 6,000 copies are manufactured and sold per year - even the fabulous price does not stop connoisseurs from buying them! What makes them take such a step, bypassing the recognized masters?

    The uniqueness of watches from the French company lies in the use of avant-garde ideas, high-tech materials and the latest processing methods. In other words, Richard Mille does not go down the road by offering gold chronometers set with brilliant-cut diamonds - these models are just the most budgetary in its range. The most valuable options here are those in which it was required to use the maximum of human inspiration, attention to detail and professionalism. For the same reason, Richard Mille was the first to decide on the use of materials that were previously considered unsuitable for the watch industry: carbon nanotubes, hardened ceramics, elastomers. Add to this list crash-testing by the most eminent athletes (Rafael Nadal, Johan Blake, Jean Todt, etc.), and the presence of several zeros in the price tag becomes quite understandable.

    2 Hublot

    High quality of manufactured products
    Country: Switzerland
    Average price: 80,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.9

    Representative of an extensive Swiss family of watch manufacturers. Despite the relatively recent appearance on the world market, the popularity of the Hublot brand can be compared with the eminent "oldies". A distinctive feature of the brand is the combination of the incongruous - this is how you can characterize the style that all watch models without exception represent. In addition, the approach to creating the geometry of the dial is also interesting - Hublot presents many forms and variations, sometimes successful, sometimes not very good. But nevertheless, the fact of searching for a new, original and unhackneyed solution is worthy of praise. Yes, the watch is expensive, but those few of the Russian users who own it, and experts agree on the quality factor of the brand as a whole.

    Advantages:

    • constant search for non-standard solutions;
    • a combination of the new with the already proven old;
    • excellent product quality.

    Flaws:

    • missing.

    1 Patek Philippe

    Favorite brand of the world elite. High authority and eminence of the brand
    Country: Switzerland
    Average price: 500,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.9

    The legendary Swiss company Patek Philippe is the manufacturer of the most expensive watch movements: the cost of its initial Calatrava line starts at $11,000, and in 2016 a wrist model with its own label was auctioned for a record $11 million. The chronograph that made history was born in 1943 and became the first mass-produced device with a perpetual calendar function. It is noteworthy that a total of 281 copies were made, all were made of pink gold and only 4 of them received a metal case. One of them caused a sensation in the watch world.

    The company, from its inception in 1839, initially focused on the luxury market. One of its founders - Jean Philippe - was engaged in the development of new models, and the other - Anthony Patek - attracted influential customers, including monarchs. Both of them did an excellent job: Patek Philippe owns hundreds of patents, and among its clients are the most eminent people in the world. So, in Russia, her watch was seen at Vladimir Putin, Yuri Luzhkov, from foreign celebrities they are worn by Nicolas Sarkozy, Paul McCartney, Bill Gates. Over the entire period of its existence, only 600 million serial movements were produced under the brand, so the possession of one of them allows you to join the elite caste.

    The best sports watch

    3 Luminox

    The most comfortable sports watch ever. The presence of backlight
    Country: USA
    Average price: 14,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.7

    The American trademark Luminox was founded in 1989, when the company's permanent boss Barry Cohen received a patent for the right to use the Swiss LLT technology. Its essence was the ability to illuminate the watch dial - a very practical function for night voyages or deep-sea diving.

    The first collection of Luminox watches went on sale in 1993 and made a great impression on diving enthusiasts and people close to military service. This was followed by large government orders to equip the US military with special versions, the development of new, very inexpensive collections and the long-awaited entry into the world market. Today, the Luminox brand is still one of the most sought after among athletes of any orientation. The main advantages of these watches are comfort, showiness and the absence of everything superfluous, which is reflected in the positive feedback from consumers.

    2 U.S. Polo

    Best price
    A country: USA (made in China)
    Average price: 4,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.8

    The manufacturer of classic quartz watches is also a very strong opponent in the fight for supremacy in the category of sports devices. It is worth recognizing that the sports series from this brand is not as popular as that of a direct competitor in the category, but in general it is in stable demand among the active population. The flagships of the line - U.S. Polo Assn. Sport Men "s US9061 and U.S. Polo Assn. Sport Men" s US9057 - are rubber watches with a wide and interesting dial that includes analog and digital displays for displaying time and additional indications (stopwatch and timer). Reliable mechanism, good lighting and overall design makes you think of the company in an exclusively positive way, which, in fact, is what happy users and many experts do.

    Advantages:

    • low price for models;
    • interesting design decisions;
    • high-quality Japanese movements (according to some reports, supplies are from Casio).

    Flaws:

    • not so popular brand.

    1 Casio

    Most popular line sports watch
    Country: Japan
    Average price: 9,000 rubles.
    Rating (2019): 4.9

    Casio once again takes the lead in the category, this time for sports watches. There really is something to be proud of here: despite the almost flawless production of classic models, the Japanese did not stop there, but went further and relied on the development of special series for physical activity. What is worth mentioning is one line of G-Shock, which for more than five years of history has gained incredible popularity among sports fans from all over the world. Of course, there are other representatives in the company's lineup, but it was G-Shock that achieved more success. As for the rest, enough was said about Casio even in its first appearance in the rating and, obviously, it is not required to repeat.

    Advantages:

    • the punchy G-Shock line is the most popular series of sports watches in the world;
    • great brand quality.

    Flaws:

    • not identified.

    How to choose a good watch

    A brief digression into the world of wrist watch brands does not give a clear certainty on the choice of a particular model. Therefore, we recommend that you pay attention to the following important characteristics:

    • Form. It's no secret that each person has an individual body structure, including wrists and hands in general. If you have a wide wrist, then you should give preference to a watch with a narrower strap, which will visually reduce the size of your hand. However, if the wrist is narrow, then in this case a watch with a strap of any width will suit you.
    • Style. In this matter, it is better to build on a more preferred appearance. Moderate classic models are suitable for business style, while casual watches accept watches of any direction.
    • Color scheme. Everything is simple here - a bright personality requires a bright design. However, for men, it is better to pay attention to neutral watches in gray, black, steel, gold or a combination of colors. For women, there is no such restriction, but there is a chance of overdoing it in the presence of a decorating "husk".
    • Mechanism type. At this stage, there are three types of clockwork: the ancient mechanical, the good old quartz and the innovative electronic. Which one to choose is up to you. However, the most common and, at the same time, reliable is precisely the quartz-type mechanism.
    • Brand popularity. Not fatal, but a very important aspect on which the performance of purchased products may depend. Of course, the brands listed in the rating are not exhaustive (at least, Japanese Seiko or Swiss Certina can also be included here). But when choosing a watch from another company, require a mandatory certificate of quality.
    • Price. A standard parameter for all products, which does not at all reflect the real state of affairs on the market. Even cheap watch models can last for decades. The main condition is proper maintenance and elementary accuracy when using.

    Playboy offers to take a look at the watches, distributing them according to psychotypes, which we immediately invented, leaving Hippocrates and Jung to university programs.

    CITY BUMPER

    His watches are airy, light, with the most open dial and clearly traced hands and marks. If the watch has additional functions, then they do not dominate, minimally complicating the structure of the dial.

    MAURICE LACROIX, ELIROS CHRONOGRAPHE

    The company, a recognized master of elegant classic watches, in the 1990s achieved the greatest success in this area. Since then, no doubt, tastes have changed, and in the new circumstances, the brand has shown great flexibility, trying to decorate watches of laconic urban design with interesting branded details. It was especially nice to see the return to the straps of the model Eliros Chronographe 1990s commemorative metal badge with the brand's emblem.

    WAINER, WALL STREET

    swiss stamp Wainer reveals new facets of the collection wall street. The classic round case and bracelet are made of medical steel with a black PVD coating. The dial bears bright indexes, made in unison with the hands, bezel and crown, covered with gold Pink colour. The reliability and accuracy of the watch is guaranteed by sapphire crystal, water resistance up to 50 meters and a Swiss quartz movement.

    One gets the impression that traditional watches have combined with high-tech into a single alloy, having received the main result, which one really wants to put on one's hand.

    BOSS, BLACK OUT AEROLINER CHRONO

    "Night metropolis" - this is how the style of the new chronograph could be defined Black Out Aeroliner Chrono. Of course, the black color goes to the products of the brand Boss, especially when it is moderately seasoned, as in this watch, with gold-bronze accents of the hands, markers and logo on the black dial. The 44 mm case is made of blackened stainless steel, the scales of the matte black dial are decorated with a thin embossed ring groove.

    88 RUE DU RHONE, DOUBLE 8 ORIGIN ENCOUNTER

    The young Genevan brand continues to produce timepieces with a modern urban style, combining classic design and sporty character. The 45mm steel case is protected by a black PVD coating, and the black dial, embossed with the repeated "88" emblem, features a yellow second hand with a counterweight in the shape of the same figure of eight.

    The contrasting combination is further emphasized by the avant-garde black rubber strap with crocodile leather texture and yellow stitching.

    FRÉDÉRIQUE CONSTANT, HOROLOGICAL SMARTWATCH

    Behind the absolutely classic appearance of this watch lies an ultra-modern "stuffing" - a chip MotionX-365 Horological Smartwatch, developed Frederique Constant in cooperation with the company Fullpower Technologies, Inc. from Silicon Valley. The chip is able to measure the owner's activity level and analyze sleep phases, then transmitting data to a smartphone, the corresponding application of which can become a personal trainer and lifestyle instructor. The smart function is manifested only by the presence of an additional small arrow.

    ZENITH, ELITE 6150

    Elite 6150- one of the most notable novelties in the collection Zenith this year. This is the first watch to be equipped with a newly developed in-house automatic movement, which is called Caliber Elite 6150. The watch has been made to have a distinct vintage flavor, namely a 1960s style feel. A narrow bezel helped to achieve this effect, due to which it was possible to increase the size of the dial to the maximum, as well as the dial itself, typical for that era, of a convex shape with slotted hour markers. The dial is finished with a fine radial polishing, giving the effect of a sunburst, and this is also a sign of watch design of those times.

    RODANIA MONTREAL

    No wonder the company decided to give this watch the name of Montreal, the cultural capital of Canada, which is also called the city of design. When it comes to design, then Montreal is the flagship collection in the Rodania range. The 41mm cushion-shaped case is crafted from rose gold PVD stainless steel with a circular brushed finish; the dial, decorated with a relief guilloche decor “Parisian nails”, is left with maximum space. A little lesson in watch design: the beveled outer ring with the minute track makes the dial look even bigger.

    SEEKER OF ADVENTURES

    He is looking for extreme. so his watch, even with the most minimal functionality, is never simple. “Making the simple complex” is the watch’s motto.

    ALPINA, ALPINER4, MANUFACTURE FLYBACK CHRONOGRAPH

    Alpiner4 is a collection of sports watches for which a new chronograph movement was developed this year with a return function that allows you to instantly restart the current measurement with a single press of the reset button. The prototype of this watch is the model Alpina 4, produced since 1938; it was in those days that the return function was invented for aviators.

    44mm stainless steel case with quartz chronograph movement, durable sapphire crystal and 100m water resistance - watch Ace Chrono ready for field testing. Swiss watch brand Swiss Military Hanowa conceived this watch as a racing watch, placing a tachymeter scale on the bezel of the case, but it turned out to be more brutal than many of their racing counterparts.

    TIMBERLAND, HENNIKER

    This watch looks like a watch made under the brand name should look like. Timberland, that is, quite strong, brutal and Timberland in spirit. In a reinforced PVD-coated aluminum case, a quartz movement operates with additional hands for indicating the date, day of the week and time of day. The deliberately rough leather strap is adorned with the emblem of the American brand, made in the form of a brand.

    VERSACE, DYLOS LIMITED EDITION

    In all hours Versace feels adventurous. Perhaps the fact is that, just seeing the golden head of the Gorgon Medusa, you are already waiting for something extraordinary. Hours Dylos Limited Edition popular in the 1970s, the design of the watch with circular rotating scales of hours and minutes was used, but the classic idea is beaten here with true Versace grace.

    SEIKO, ASTRON GPS SOLAR DUAL-TIME

    Company Seiko traditionally strong in high-tech watches. In the flagship collection of this direction Astron GPS Solar avant-garde developments of the brand are collected - a dial with highly efficient solar batteries, the best GPS sensor in the watch industry, which allows you to determine the time zone in which the owner of the watch is located at the touch of a button and set the time using atomic clocks. Models dual-time- the third generation of Astrons, they are equipped with a second time zone indicator and a calendar programmed up to 2100.

    AEROWATCH RENAISSANCE ORANGE TORNADO

    "Tornado, orange threat level" - although it is not written on the dial of this watch, it is nevertheless implied. There is, in fact, no dial - this is a common thing in watches with a skeletonized mechanism. For this watch, a movement has been chosen whose skeletal mainplate and bridges create an annular vortex structure, which is visually enhanced by two traditional watch movement parts that also have a vortex spiral structure.

    CASIO, EDIFICE EQB-510

    Smart watches are one of the trends that will define the watch market in the coming years, and it is not surprising that many watch brands are starting to equip their products with smart functions. Casio- one of the world leaders in the production of multifunctional electronic watches, so the Japanese company could not get around this trend. Watch Edifice EQB-510, like other smartwatches, are able to communicate with smartphones (iOS and Android) using this feature to set the local time. The watch does not need to pick up a signal from the GPS satellites - the phone receives the local network signal along with information about the time zone and daylight saving time and transmits it to the watch. You just need to press a button on them.

    RAYMOND WEIL, FREELANCER PIPER

    Raymond Weil, the founder of this watch brand, was not only a serious businessman, but also an enthusiastic amateur pilot. On the aircraft he owned Piper he flew all over Switzerland and not only - once he, in the company of friends, undertook a private flight to the Soviet Union. Eli Bernheim, his grandson and current CEO of Raymond Weil, dedicated the watch to Freelancer Piper to his grandfather, giving them the name of his plane. One of the most popular themes in the Artya collection of recent years is Russian roulette, and this theme is implemented in the watches of the Russian Roulette series in the form of a revolving magazine with one cartridge rotating on the dial.

    WOW EFFECT

    HAMILTON, VENTURA ELVIS80
