    Good afternoon friends!

Do you know that yarn pompoms can be made not only for hats and scarves, but also to decorate your home with them? Things and crafts made from pompoms are so cozy, soft and positive!

I had a lot of such ideas, and having recently seen a cute panel of pom-poms on a hoop online, I decided to make one for myself, and at the same time tell me how to make pom-poms from yarn in different ways with my own hands: using a cardboard template, on a fork, on fingers, how to make large and small pom-poms.

This is an updated post of an old article that no one has read since it was originally published, I have worked on it again, so don't be surprised by the existing comments.

    DIY yarn pompoms

To make pompoms we will need yarn. What is the best pom pom yarn? In principle, any wool, half-wool, acrylic is suitable; you can make it from synthetics. Only cotton is not very suitable; it is unlikely to produce fluffy pompoms.

How much yarn will you need? From one small skein of yarn you will get a pompom of approximately the same diameter as the skein, and from such considerations you can estimate the yarn consumption.

For small crafts You can just use leftover yarn.

You will also need a device for winding threads. You can buy a special plastic one or make it yourself from cardboard, or you can generally use any item that is at hand. I will show different variants how to make pompoms from yarn step by step instructions and photo.

How to Make a Yarn Pom Pom Using a Cardboard Template

I want to say that while I was experimenting with different methods, I came to the conclusion that the most beautiful and fluffy pom-pom is still obtained with the help of such a template. Although other methods have their advantages.

So, first of all you need to make the template itself.

This way you can make large yarn pompoms by adjusting the thickness of the cardboard rings.

This method requires accuracy and patience, but the result is truly excellent.

    Colored yarn pompoms

In addition, using a round template you can make cute multi-colored pompoms with a pattern.

It's very simple. We divide the template visually or using a pencil into the required number of parts and wind yarn of a certain color on each of them. Here you can experiment with both the number and width of the parts. You can even make just a couple of turns of a certain color and get colored dots on the pom pom.

When we cut the threads, we get this beauty!

How to make pompoms from yarn quickly

If you don’t want to bother with cardboard templates, which, by the way, wear out pretty quickly, but want to make a pom-pom quickly, then it’s quite possible to make pom-poms from yarn without cardboard. Once upon a time, in the distant years, I was in a hospital and the girls and I made poodles out of pompoms there so as not to get bored. We simply wound the yarn onto a soap dish.

You can even wind the threads around the palm of your hand, then cut them in two places, tie them in the middle, shape and trim the pompom.

Sometimes they just use a rectangular piece of cardboard or an old plastic card: they cut it lengthwise in the middle, not all the way through, insert a tying thread through the slot and wind the yarn across it.

    Yarn pompoms on a fork

About four years ago I mastered this method when I made a pillow with a heart from pompoms. Then I unraveled the old pullover; just two sleeves were enough for pom-poms.

There were a lot of pompoms to be made for the pillow, so I needed a simple and quick way making pompoms with your own hands.

It turned out to be very convenient to use a regular table fork.

How to make pompoms from yarn on a fork:

    1. Place a small short thread on the fork; it will be needed later to knit a pompom.

    2. We begin to wind the yarn around the fork. For each pompom I made 100 turns.

    3. We wound the yarn, cut the thread and tie the thread lying on the fork, tighten it tightly so that later the threads do not come out of the pompom.

    4. Turn the fork over and cut the wound threads in the middle with scissors. This is very convenient to do on a fork.

    5. Remove the threads from the fork.

    6. Now we collect the threads into a ball by hand, trim the excess ones to make an even ball.

My pompom was 5 centimeters in diameter.

I made a total of 22 pom poms and sewed them onto the heart shaped pillow cover.

How to make a small pompom from yarn

The above methods are more suitable, as I have already noted, for large and medium pompoms. But how to make a very small pompom? I heard that you can wrap these pompoms on your fingers. And this is what I got.

    Pompoms on fingers

    1. I put a thread on my finger.
    2. She wound the yarn around her finger.
    3. With difficulty I removed the winding from my finger and tied the threads.
    4. I cut it, shaped it, trimmed the ends.

The pompom turned out to be about 3 cm in diameter.

But I didn’t like this method, it’s not very convenient, and my finger turned blue from the tight winding

Then I came up with the idea of winding threads around an old toothbrush.

    Small pompoms on a toothbrush

The process is the same: we wind, tie, cut, trim.

It’s very quick to make pom-poms on a toothbrush; they turn out small and neat.

As a result of my experiments with how to make pom-poms from yarn, I got these different pom-poms, which you can see in the photo.

    Pom pom crafts

Using yarn pompoms you can make such wonderful crafts and little things for your home!

I really liked the idea of making letters with pompoms. If you remember, I once talked about knitted three-dimensional letters and later received a letter from my reader, a teacher, who, according to my descriptions, knitted an entire alphabet for children. I am delighted with such a needlewoman and creative teacher! And children would really like letters made from pompoms, and you don’t need to know how to knit.

I posted only a few photos of crafts, but you can see even more amazing ideas in my video.

Panel of pompoms on a hoop

Finally, my boast: how I made a panel from pom-poms.

I liked this idea on a hoop; I’m not indifferent to such fashionable things lately. I already have one panel in the hoop - with crocheted sunflowers.

    1. I secured the thin mesh in the hoop, stretching it well.
    2. I trimmed the edges and glued them with Moment glue on the back side.
    3. Using a hook, I pulled the strings from the pompoms through the mesh and tied the ends.
    4. But this was not enough, since in a vertical position the pompoms hung down. Therefore, I also planted them with additional glue.
    5. At the bottom I attached a ribbon bow.
    6. I learned how to make a flower from paper napkin and decorated her composition with it.

This is the kind of coziness and crafts made from pompoms that I offer you, and we figured out how to make pompoms from yarn, large and small, using various devices.

All the best to you, I look forward to your comments, statements, wishes, questions.

There are several ways to decorate knitted hat beautiful pompom. Let's look at several popular technologies. Our video tutorials tell you how to make a pom-pom from yarn for a hat to decorate a hand-knitted item.

In this case, you can make the decoration from the same threads as the headdress itself or, on the contrary, provide contrast by making a pom-pom from threads of a different color and even from a different material.

Making a pompom is not a difficult task, especially since you are offered on the topic of how to make beautiful pompom for a hat, a master class from the best knitters, known on the Internet for their work and video tutorials. Without a doubt, you will be able to create a cute decoration that will be a worthy completion of your painstaking work on knitting a beautiful headdress.

So, let's start studying the basic technologies for making pompoms.

Fur pompom made from natural fur You can create a raccoon with your own hands. Before you learn how to make a fur pompom for a hat, you need to prepare a piece of fur approximately 9.5 x 6.0 centimeters in size. Using a needle and thread, we begin to stitch the fur along the edges, causing it to gradually tighten.

It is better to make stitches no longer than five millimeters, so that the fur is pulled together in small, numerous folds. In this way, all the edges of the fur are passed, stitching around the perimeter. When the thread is tightened, these edges are gradually pulled closer to each other, and the outer side of the fur forms a pom-pom. The underside of the fur goes inside and is completely invisible.

The opposite sides of the pompom can also be tied together with thread to make the fastening more secure. The thread is tied in a knot several times.

The finished pom-pom must be combed out and held over steam for 15-20 seconds - it will take on a finished, very pretty look.

    Video lesson:

The technology for its manufacture is simple. Prepare two cardboard circles with holes in the center, fold them together and wrap them with thread. The thread forms a toroidal surface (donut shape), for which each turn you have to thread it through the hole.

You can wind the thread folded in half or four until the holes in the circles are completely filled. When the threads form a kind of “donut”, it must be cut along the line of maximum diameter. Using scissors, first cut the outer layers of the “donut”, then the inner ones, until the paper circles open.

Then the circles are separated, and the threads passing through the holes are tied with thread between the paper circles very tightly. After this, the paper mugs are torn and removed. The pompom can be trimmed a little with scissors and, if necessary, its diameter can be reduced. The thread with which the pompom was tied is attached to the hat.

    Video lesson:

The good thing about this technology is that you can make pompoms of different sizes - it can be small or slightly larger pompom. This method is especially valuable because you can make very small pompoms. The thread is wound around the tines of the fork, and the more you wind, the larger the size and fluffiness of the pompom will be.

Next, the wound thread is tied between the middle tines of the fork. Having tied the threads, you can remove the winding from the fork and cut the loops with nail scissors along the edges on both sides of the dressing. It is advisable to do this carefully, exactly in the middle, opposite the outer tines of the fork, so that the pompom turns out even. All that remains is to fluff the resulting pompom so that it looks neat.

You can decorate a hat or blouse with such pompoms by tying them to the thread with which this element is tied, close to the surface of the woolen item or at some distance from it, leaving the thread longer.

    Video lesson:

We take as a basis a square piece of cardboard, the size of the side of which is equal to twice the length of the future fibers. A slot is made from the middle of one of the sides to the center of the cardboard, and two cuts are made on the other side.

A double thread is passed through the large incision and fixed in the small ones - this will be the thread with which the pompom will subsequently be tied. Now the threads are wound onto the cardboard in a fairly thick layer: the more it is wound, the fluffier the pompom will be. If you want to get a two-color pompom, you can wind another one on top of the first thread. It is necessary to take into account that the pompom will turn out to have a slightly smaller diameter than intended, since the lower layers of thread are shorter than the upper ones, and when leveling you will be more long ends cut it off.

The threads are tightly pulled together using pre-prepared thread, the threads are cut at the edges with scissors or a blade, after removing all the winding from the cardboard, the threads must be tightly tied again. The pompom is ready.

    Video lesson:

Often hats, scarves and children's clothing are decorated with various funny pom-poms. But pompoms can be used not only to decorate clothes; you can use pompoms to create different and amazing crafts with your own hands.

Any knitting yarn is useful for making pompoms. You can use new yarn or leftover yarn, yarn from an old item unraveled, boucle yarn, fleecy yarn, smooth yarn, etc. The pompoms always turn out soft, fluffy and fun!

In addition to yarn, you will need patterns, which you can make yourself from cardboard. The size of the resulting pompom will depend on the size of the pattern.

To make it easier to cut out the inner circle (this will be especially useful when making small pompoms), you can cut it along the line.

We take two templates (patterns) of the same size and put them together with cuts in different directions.

We take a thread (it is better to take a thread no more than 2 m long) and insert it into a needle. We twist the templates in one direction using a needle, completely filling the hole in the template.

You will need several threads. At the beginning of work, secure the tip of the thread with the first two turns. After the first thread ends, take the second thread and insert it into the needle. The end of the first thread and the beginning of the second are secured with the first two turns of the second thread. Thus, we wind on the template required amount threads

Carefully cut the threads along the edge of the template with the tips of scissors.

We measure out approximately 30 cm of yarn. We move the templates apart and firmly tie the bundle of threads between the templates with two knots. The ends of the threads can be carefully trimmed, or they can be left for further assembly of the craft. The pompom is ready.

    We remove the patterns.

Shake it. Trim any protruding threads.

From pompoms you can make a chicken, a bear, a pig, and various types. This white pompom can be used to make a New Year's craft: Snowman.
