• Adhesive tape for sewing is called. How to hem the hem of a skirt (including using fleece-fix - a special adhesive tape). methods, types and characteristics of compositions

    29.06.2020

    Hello, dear readers of the blog “site”. Now I want to tell you about a wonderful sewing assistant - paper adhesive tape. This is a tape 1-2 cm wide with a layer of glue on one side. Upon contact with the iron, the adhesive layer melts and transfers to the fabric, which allows the two surfaces of the fabric to be glued together.

    This is an indispensable thing when processing the bottom of a product, especially knitwear. I want to show you how to use this tape with an example bottom treatment knitted top.

    This tape is sold by the meter and in reels:

    Adhesive coating on one side:

    Apply the tape to the wrong side of the bottom of the product and iron it on. The bottom of my product was not cut perfectly evenly, so I retreat a couple of millimeters from the bottom cut.

    Now it’s convenient to trim the bumps:

    After this, we pry up the edge of the paper and peel the tape off the fabric. The adhesive layer has transferred from paper to fabric.

    Now we fold the seam allowance taped with paper tape onto the wrong side of the product.

    And iron it - glue this allowance with an iron:

    The use of paper adhesive tape will give the product a finished look:

    Using this paper tape it is also very convenient to do belt loops on the trousers (see the video at the link).

    In the next article I will tell you how to sew a knitted top without a pattern in half an hour. Good luck and sew with me!!

    When purchasing women's and men's trousers, suits, we are often faced with the need to shorten clothes. This happens especially often in people of short or average height. On the one hand, everyone can choose the optimal length, but on the other, you have to spend extra money. It's better to learn how to hem things yourself.

    How to use tape to hem pants

    To ensure that the work is not done in vain, you should first measure the length of the pants on the person who will wear them. Ideally, they should reach the middle of the heel. If you can’t try it on, you can take his other pants and measure the length along the crotch. It is recommended to mark the desired length with dry soap. At home, things can be hemmed using a special braid or a thin web.

    Trouser braid is a special textile product, which can be used to hem the bottom of things. It is an auxiliary material, but no less important than other weaving products.

    Advantages:

    1. Thanks to it, the item gets dirty less, and the edges are reliably protected from natural wear.
    2. The product increases the wear resistance of things and helps maintain their original appearance longer.
    3. It is made from linen, wool, cotton, so it does not cause irritation even on sensitive skin.
    4. It does not wear out and stays on clothes for many years.

    Unlike braid, adhesive web is a lighter, more transparent, easy-to-use product. Its width varies between 0.5–5 cm. The product has a mesh structure, therefore it gives the bottom of the pants a more plastic shape. Available without paper and on paper. It is recommended to use adhesive web to hem things that do not need to be washed frequently - if water gets in repeatedly, the product will no longer perform its function.

    It is not suitable for all types of fabrics; for example, on knitwear it will stretch along with the item. It is better not to use it for thin things. It is recommended to use an adhesive web no more than 0.5 cm wide, because if it is wider, the attachment point will be dense and rigid. If not on sale narrow options, you can buy a wide one and cut it. Learn how to hem trousers using tape correctly.

    How to Hem Pants Using Duct Tape

    A web for hemming trousers is a very simple method for those who have not previously repaired clothes by hand. Correct hemming should be done as follows:

    1. Take adhesive tape 2 times longer than the width of men's pants.
    2. Fold the clothes and attach the web to the wrong side.
    3. Run a hot iron over the top of the product to glue it.
    4. When the paper connects with the fabric, wait a little.
    5. If the web does not stick the first time, it is recommended to spray it with water and quickly repeat the procedure.
    6. Separate the paper from the sticky hot melt backing.
    7. Make sure that there is a strip with diamonds on the wrong side.

    Trouser tape for hemming trousers

    After the measurements are taken, you need to iron the clothes, for example, classic men's pants, as well as the finishing material itself, so that the braid shrinks. If this is not done, the appearance of the clothing may be damaged in the future. If the tape for hemming trousers with an iron and the trousers are ready, you can proceed to further steps:

    1. Turn the pants inside out.
    2. There should be a chalk line left - you need to attach the braid to it and start stitching on a sewing machine, keeping a distance of 2 mm from the top edge. If desired, you can trim before this, but this is not necessary.
    3. The hem of the pants needs to be hemmed

    A type of lining material that has an adhesive layer on one or both sides is called adhesive fabric. The material is usually inserted between the front and lining parts of the products. It is used to stiffen parts of bags, clothing, toys to avoid deformation during use, and even for repairing clothing.

    Varieties and properties

    Woven-based adhesive materials can be elastic or inelastic. The first can be produced:

    • made of thin lint-free knitwear - used for duplicating thin materials;
    • knitwear with pile - used for dense, soft materials (the pile allows you to make the glue layer invisible).

    Inelastic ones do not stretch and are used to give products shape, strength and resistance to deformation. Non-elastic ones are based on cotton or polyester, so they are produced:

    • made of chiffon - usually used to give shape to transparent blouses and dresses;
    • calico - used in the manufacture of corsets;
    • special thermal fabric - for collars, fur and leather products.

    Adhesive fabrics have several basic properties that distinguish them from similar lining materials on a non-woven basis:

    1. They drape perfectly.
    2. Very durable, do not tear.
    3. The service life is longer than non-woven fabrics.
    4. Flexible - rigid bends are not formed if the product is turned inside out.

    In the production of such gaskets, the adhesive mass is applied to the base either pointwise or in a continuous thin layer.

    How to choose

    The adhesive fabric is selected in accordance with the most important rule: It may exceed the base material in rigidity, but not in density.

    Most the right way choose the perfect one adhesive fabric- carry out a test on several samples. Take several squares of the main material (side length should be approximately 15 cm) and several slightly smaller pieces different types gaskets Duplicate (glue with an iron).

    After thermal exposure, the gaskets become more rigid, but to varying degrees, which will be visible on the samples. Some colors become darker after gluing. Sometimes the base material changes: protrusions appear on the front side, the color changes, and even the structure is damaged.

    Advice! Be sure to check how the base material drapes with the adhesive-based interlining. Fold all the samples in half and see which one works best.

    For heavy, dense fabrics, pads with a higher density are suitable, for example. For thin ones it is better to use non-woven fabric. For stretchable and elastic - pads on a knitted basis.

    How to use

    Adhesive fabrics are used to strengthen cuffs, sleeves, pockets, hems, collars and other parts of clothing, as well as in needlework.

    Rules of use:

    1. Before you start gluing, do this: spray it with water from a spray bottle and lay it on a horizontal surface to dry. If this is not done, then after the first wash, shrinkage is possible, as a result of which the item will warp and unsightly folds will appear on it.
    2. The direction of the grain thread when cutting fabric-based pads must coincide with that of the base material.
    3. You need to glue the adhesive fabric without seam allowance - this is not necessary. If you do make an allowance, the edge turns out to be much denser and more voluminous.
    4. Apply the adhesive fabric with the rough side to the underside of the garment, then press with an iron preheated to 100°. Thus, the composition adheres firmly and the two surfaces cannot be separated from each other.

    Advice! If adhesive tape If the fabric is poorly attached to the main material, then straighten it and press it with an iron again.

    1. Care, washing and ironing of products containing adhesive pads is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations for the care of the main fabric. Most often, even after washing in hot water, nothing is damaged.
    2. Make sure that the hot sole of the iron does not touch the glue layer, as it will be very difficult to wipe off later.
    3. When making elegant, sophisticated items, it is not recommended to use adhesive pads, as the parts of the product will be too rigid. It is better to use them when sewing jackets and coats.
    4. Do not use adhesive padding on corduroy, corduroy, velvet, silk, gauze, or transparent fabrics.

    The article will talk about two types of tapes that have proven themselves well in cases where you need to reduce the length of a textile product, but you absolutely don’t want to pick up scissors and a needle. “Velcro” (Velcro-type connection) allows for multiple connections, but “gossamer”, a tape that ensures gluing of fabric during heat treatment, is a one-time operation. But we will consider both methods, since our windows rarely grow in height.

    We have a curtain that needs hemming, and two ways to do it without a sewing machine

    The first method is suitable for heavy, opaque material, and today designers, using Velcro, offer not only to decorate attic curtains and gather the bottom of heavy curtains, but also to radically change the height of the curtain.

    Many people know that in harsh climates it is good when the curtain is higher than the level of the radiator; this helps save energy and seriously increases the air temperature in the room. And almost everyone knows that when it’s hot and sunny, a thick curtain helps keep the room cool.

    It is Velcro that helps adjust the height of the curtain from the floor level to the window sill level, and you shouldn’t think that this is a crazy idea. The Velcro fastener is not visible from the outside, and with the help of this tape you can assemble the curtains into a very beautiful window frame.

    However, there are several problems with this tape:

    1. Self-adhesive bases constantly experience “tension stress”, and after a dozen washes the tape may fail.
    2. The open part of the belt will quickly become dusty, which will significantly reduce the adhesion properties of the belt.
    3. Cleaning this fastener is quite a labor-intensive operation.

    Solving this problem is quite simple:

    • Apply excess tape (it is sold in a roll and always with a reserve) to the free area. When you need it, “re-stick” (excuse the word) the excess onto the vacant section of the tape;
    • To clean the dirty part of the tape, use ordinary office tape with a small width. It is enough to glue it, press it lightly with your finger, heat it a little (for example, with a hairdryer) and peel it off. After such an operation, Velcro will work like new;
    • For heavy fabrics, a radical solution is needed - stitching. Here you need to understand that the total thickness of the Velcro fastener should be greater than the thickness of the curtain. Otherwise, the adhesive layer simply will not withstand the loads.

    In other words, “Velcro” is a great way to decorate a window exactly the way you want, but it is worth considering that such Velcro is designed for a small pull-off force that is accessible to a child. And children are precisely the factor that can ruin any interior. But there is a second method, more labor-intensive, but more reliable.

    Web tape, iron, curtain and 5 minutes per linear meter

    This is roughly what an advertisement for the second way to shorten a curtain sounds like: sewing machine using self-adhesive “gossamer” tape. Today, many manufacturers include in curtain sets not only useless “hooks” for “string curtain rods”, which have not been produced for 6 years, but also rolls of this “cobweb” itself.

    Let's see how to use the “cobweb” correctly if we don’t want to cut the curtain, brush off the dust from the sewing machine, and in general we have a day off, and only three hours for my husband to finally help decorate the window. So:

    • Rule one: in addition to the “cobweb”, curtains, iron and five minutes, you will need an assistant, two pins, ironing board(ideally a thin blanket on a flat board), several sheets of A4 paper, a damp sponge, good lighting and patience;
    • Rule two: you need to remember that the iron heats up unevenly across the soleplate, fabric without a basting cannot be laid out evenly, and it is almost impossible to iron a fold evenly on fabric without a pattern.
    • Rule three: the folded curtain must hang on the curtain rod for several days to take shape. To smooth it out, straighten it and spray the bottom with clean water. The wet bottom of the curtain will become a “weight,” which will flatten the curtain. As it dries, use regular clothespins to determine the floor level. In two days you will know exactly the length of the curtain you need. All that remains is to prepare everything so that the curtains you found in the store become the curtains of your dreams.

    Take a fabric that matches the curtains in density, check at what temperature the “cobweb” will stick. A piece of 20x20 cm is enough, making sure that the “web” is stuck, sharply pull the edges. If at least part comes off, use two layers of “cobweb”.

    Prepare a dry towel, sheets of paper, a damp cloth and empty the water from the steam iron. If you have a regular ironing board, put something flat on it (a board), cover it with a blanket and don’t throw away the hooks that are now included in curtain sets. Now let's shorten our curtain.

    Bend the curtain hanging on the ledge from below to ensure the required distance from the floor level. It is worth securing with pins every 30-40 linear centimeters to ensure straight line no folds. Iron the fold line to make the job easier.

    Make sure the fabric is dry before gluing:

    • Straighten the fabric and place the adhesive tape under the edges to be glued so that it is completely covered by the fabric;
    • For tulle, use a sheet of A4 paper, which you place over the seam, and press on top with an iron for 25-40 seconds. Raise the iron, move the sheet of paper and repeat until you have glued the entire joint;
    • Remove the pins that secured the gluing line as you go so as not to get lost, while at the same time adjusting the “web” so that it does not extend beyond the edge of the fabric. If it comes out, it will stick to the paper. Carefully tear off the paper in the direction “from the floor”, straighten the “web” and take another sheet of paper;
    • Warm up the edges of the seams a little longer; there you can even fold the “web” in half.

    Binder

    The problem of quickly shortening the hem of a new dress or skirt, just purchased trousers or jeans) often arises before us. After all, there are situations when we really need these things immediately after purchase. How to do this quickly and efficiently?

    You will need: contrasting threads for basting, a “centimeter”, a narrow piece of dry soap (if the product is dark) or colored crayons, adhesive tape with double-sided adhesive, gauze (approximately 30x30 mm), folded in half.

    Adhesive tape has been used for quite a long time (15 years), which means that it can be easily purchased at any Fabric or Sewing Accessories store. Naturally, a specialized sewing accessories store http://www.atelyefaina.ru/shveinaya-furnitura.php is preferable - since there is always a choice there.

    So what kind of adhesive tape do we need? Single-sided or double-sided?
    I will give several types of double-sided adhesive tapes that give the necessary effect for hemming the bottom of products, as well as for minor repairs (repairing torn clothing and eliminating small holes, for example, damage from cigarette ash).

    Since the result of their use is the same, and the store may not have the adhesive tape you need, I will give options for the most common adhesive tapes. Glue web is a thin melt of glue in the form of a web of different configurations, on paper and without paper, of various widths.

    Feel free to purchase any of the following:

    1 Hot-melt adhesive web. Width - 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, 50, 70 mm. white.

    2. Cobweb “Mesh”. Width - 7, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 mm. The “mesh” also comes on a paper basis, which is very convenient for use and storage. It is transparent due to its design.

    To hem the bottom of a dress, skirt or trousers, adhesive tape 10 -15 mm wide is required. But this technology is used only for loose fabrics (silk, various synthetic fabrics, knitwear). For hemming thick coat fabrics and leather goods this technology is not suitable.

    Sequencing

    1) We measure the exact length by which we need to shorten the product and add 15 mm. This will be the cutting line for the excess fabric. Let's cut it off. Then, we measure with a “centimeter” along the entire perimeter of the bottom of the product 15 mm upward and draw a hem line.
    Don't forget to allow for 15mm of hem allowance.
    We draw the hem line with either a dry piece of soap or chalk. I recommend using chalk in extreme cases, since after finishing work, it is not always completely removed from the fabric. Modern fabrics have different structures and can retain chalk residues.
    2) Mark along the drawn hem line with a contrasting thread.
    3) Bend the fabric 15 mm to the wrong side of the product and iron it. That's it - preparation for gluing the hem of the product has been completed
    4) Then place adhesive tape between the main fabric and the ironed hem line. Using a damp gauze cloth placed over the hem, gradually moving along the hem line, iron it to the main fabric, holding the iron on the gauze for 2-3 seconds. Under the influence of steam, the hem is tightly connected to the main fabric.

    It is important not to forget that the double-sided adhesive web is placed between the hem and the main fabric, and even then it is subjected to heat treatment (gluing) on the side that will be on the wrong side.

    Minor product repairs

    Elimination of small tears and holes in the product is achieved by applying a patch either from a piece of fabric from the main product or from a fabric similar in color.

    How it's done:

    A patch is cut out of a piece of fabric in a size that repeats the shape of the damage, but enlarged by approximately 5 times (it can be less, but it depends on the size of the damage and the density of the fabric of the product). A contour is cut out of the adhesive tape to match the size of the patch.
    In this case, it is better to use a wider adhesive tape.

    The product is turned inside out and a patch is applied to the damaged area; an adhesive tape is placed between the fabric of the product and the patch, repeating the shape of the patch. Wet gauze is applied on top, and the patch is ironed to the product (time 2 - 3 seconds). If necessary, ironing is repeated.
