In order to stop the love affairs of their frivolous wives, prudent husbands invented the so-called iron guard of chastity - the “chastity belt,” or, as it was also called, the “belt of Venus.”
According to one version, the first inventor of the “chastity belt” was the Padua tyrant Francesco II; according to another, more common version, the belts were made in Bergamo and were called “Venetian bars” or “Bergamo locks”.
In those days there was such an expression as “locking up your wife in the Bergamo way.” The belt was designed so that the woman wearing it could fulfill her natural needs, but not sexual intercourse.
The models of chastity belts were different. Many of them were made of precious metals - silver, gold - and decorated with beautiful chasing and inlay.

According to historians, these are the remains of unfortunate widows whose husbands did not return from military campaigns, and they were forced to remain marital fidelity until their death.
However, the era that gave birth to chastity belts also created an antidote to them. Cunning manufacturers of “guardians” received double benefits from the sale of their products: for fabulous money they handed over the “unit” and the key to a jealous spouse, and for a separate fee they provided a copy of the key to the wife or her ardent admirer.
The trick with the duplicate was not a secret, and the initially cruel ritual gave rise to many anecdotes and funny stories. However, fairy tales are fairy tales, and to prevent such mistakes from happening, the design of the belts began to be complicated. In the 17th century, jewelers got down to business. Previously, the lock could be opened by any adulterer with a nail or the tip of a dagger, but skilled craftsmen corrected this oversight by providing the lock with a secret: if they tried to open the mechanism with a “foreign” master key, the spring grip pinched the rod and at the same time bit off a piece of metal. Thus, the owner of sexual property could count how many times his “treasure” was attacked.

But was the chastity belt a fictional accessory or did it exist in reality? Costume historians prefer to avoid this topic due to lack of information and reluctance to get involved in an old and very complicated story in which truth is difficult to separate from fiction.
I have collected some interesting facts about chastity belts that partially shed light on this story. And my story will certainly be accompanied by pictures :)) So...
In 1996, the British Museum removed from its exhibition the “so-called chastity belt”, which occupied its place place of honor on display since 1846. The reason for this was the exposure of similar exhibits in other collections, which one after another turned out to be fakes of the 19th century. The identification of such remakes was often hampered by the skill and ingenuity of the counterfeiters, who could use authentic materials when assembling “genuine chastity belts.” Thus, in two of the known cases, medieval dog collars were used in pseudo-belts...
Without a doubt, we owe modern ideas about the chastity belt and the abundance of its counterfeits to historians and moralists of the 19th century, who enthusiastically described in their works the “terrifying realities of the Middle Ages,” using the power of their imagination to add more dramatic colors to the picture than was actually there.
And if the conclusions of historical science may become outdated, and the authenticity of artifacts in museums is in question, there is only one thing left to do - in search of the truth, turn to the sources of those times in which women were credited with wearing chastity belts.
Chastity belts in medieval literature
One of the first references to the “belt + fidelity” design known to me is found in the lei of Marie of France “Guigemar” (12th century), where it is described how main character He ties the belt on his beloved with a complex and strong knot. She reciprocates his feelings and ties difficult-to-untie knots on his shirt, while they vow to love the one who will be able to untie these knots, knowing that no one but themselves can handle it.
Here, although a real belt appears, it plays the symbolic role of a keepsake knot. It's more of a souvenir than an obstacle. Please note, although in different ways, both are connected :))
Another reference can be found between the lines of Guillaume de Machaut's poem "Le livre dou Voir Dit", in which a lady gives her lover a golden key "from her innermost treasures and honor." Since the author of the poem was a famous lover of allegories, this description should not be interpreted literally. But this description confirms at least the existence at the turn of the 13th-14th centuries literary image ladies' honor guarded by a castle.
Other references to chastity belts known to me date back to a later time - they are found in the literature of the 16th and 17th centuries, mainly in satirical stories about jealous husbands and cunning wives.
Chastity Belt Images
The first clear evidence of the existence of a chastity belt in the form of a hip frame, which was locked with a lock, is seen by historians in the drawing of a manuscript from 1405. Its pages contain a treatise on military affairs (!), known as “Bellifortis”.
What is curious is that this drawing has a caption: “This is the belt of Florentine ladies, iron and strong, closing at the front.”
But according to researchers, such belts in Italy at the beginning of the 15th century were not worn by husbands on their wives, but rather by the women themselves who wore them as a means of protection from violence from invading soldiers. This explains why the belt ended up on the pages of a military treatise.
There are several known German satirical drawings from the 16th century that depict the same plot involving a chastity belt. Both the drawing and the accompanying poems depicted a young woman married to an ugly old man:
With one hand she reaches into her husband's wallet full of money, and with the other she transfers this money into the hand of her husband. young lover, who has the key to her belt. At the same time, the chastity belt is drawn more than abstractly. In my opinion, this is indirect evidence that the artist depicted a speculative thing that had no obvious analogues in reality.

But this engraving by Heinrich Wierrich (1575-1600) is a pleasure to look at. The husband in the scene is easily identified by the donkey ears on his hat. The artist’s attention to detail made him work more clearly on the chastity belt itself. Now this is not just a brace with a lock, but a more elegant design... Surviving chastity belts...
Not known for certain. The acquisition by science of all the museum artifacts known to me dates back to the 19th century, and in light of the already described story with the British Museum, it becomes difficult to trust their authenticity.
As a rule, iron chastity belts were discovered under unclear circumstances, which were even more disturbing to the minds of 19th century historians who had already suffered from the Middle Ages.
For example, in 1889, a certain researcher said that he discovered a chastity belt on one of the female skeletons from an Austrian crypt in the early 17th century.
Another belt around the same years was unexpectedly found in the palace of the Venetian Doges. Moreover, it was immediately recognized as the belt from the time of Francesco II, Lord of Padua in 1388-1405. Nowadays, museum staff do not have any evidence of exactly this dating written on the tablet, but, as far as I know, the belt remains on display in the museum.

There are probably no known collections of medieval decorative and applied art that in the 19th century would not have been enriched with a chastity belt :)) Of course, there was such an exhibit in the Cluny Museum in Paris, but unlike the staff of the British Museum, the Parisians did not put this item in storage. Having debunked their fake (this belt was also not real), they simply changed the nameplate to the belt, signing that it was a remake from the 19th century.
To summarize this short historical excursion we can notice that:
Since the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, we know for certain only allegorical or satirical descriptions of chastity belts;
The images of belts in satirical drawings are abstract and do not support the idea that the artists might have been familiar with the design of some real object;
Chastity belts from museum collections are, in the vast majority of cases, fakes of the 19th century, reflecting the fashion for medieval horrors characteristic of the Victorian era. Those belts that are still signed as real, quite possibly, have simply not yet been examined;
