• Sewing courses on weekends. Cutting and sewing courses. How the courses work

    27.02.2021

After the purchase sewing machine Many people have a question: how can they now learn to sew things on it? And since the machine itself cost a pretty penny, you usually want to save money on your studies. And many people think: Is it really possible to take cutting and sewing courses for beginners for free?

Yes, friends, this is a very real and feasible task, you just need to know the places and today I will share this information with you. The fact is that I myself started sewing from scratch for free, and learned the most necessary basics in sewing on my own without teachers or mentors. And I also know many seamstresses who have been sewing for a long time, professionally and for money, but have not completed any courses; these are the so-called self-taught seamstresses.

5 ways to take cutting and sewing courses for beginners for free

    1. Atelier

Not many people know that ateliers hire not only seamstresses with experience, but also seamstresses without experience who only know how to hold a thread and a needle in their hands. At the same time, the atelier undertakes to train the employee. Why do studios need such workers, you ask? The fact is that in modern studios you always need people who will be on hand. In order to assemble a product for fitting or to shorten curtains, such sewing operations do not require special skills and experienced seamstresses often do not like to spend time on this.

If you have free time or want to learn how to sew for free, you can get a job as a trainee in such an atelier. At first, of course, you will not be allowed near the sewing equipment, because in the studio it is professional, unlike those machines that are at home. But if you learn to sew on such units, you will confidently sew on a household sewing machine. You will gain invaluable experience in production without spending a penny, and you may even get paid.

    2. Labor exchange

Unlike the first method, this option takes longer, but in the end you will have a crust that will make you a certified tailor. With such a diploma, you can count on higher wages, but here you will first need to gain experience.

How to get to cutting and sewing courses for free at the labor exchange. First, you must register with the labor exchange as a non-working citizen. It is clear that your work book should indicate that you are not currently working anywhere. Secondly, you must inform the social worker that you want to get a new profession as a tailor and write an application. You will then be notified when such courses will begin, and you may even have to wait.

As you can see, this method is not suitable for everyone. You must not be employed anywhere, and be prepared for 6 months of study, during which you will be paid a meager stipend from the state. The advantages of the labor exchange are free training and the opportunity to find a new specialty and job.

    3. Technology lessons

As far as I remember, in school, after the 7th grade, we learned to sew and cut in labor and technology classes. Even now, students come to me with basic knowledge of cutting and sewing left over from school, and some are well versed in patterns and skillfully sew on sewing machines. So if you already feel at school that sewing interests you, sign up for similar clubs and show your teacher in every possible way that you want to learn how to sew. Seeing your efforts, the teacher will always pay more attention to you than other students, and you will gain the maximum knowledge of cutting and sewing.

You say, I’ve already graduated from school, what should I do? If you have a daughter, then she probably also wants to learn to sew. After all, they say that children follow the example of their parents in everything. I have students in my courses who have been burning with the desire to become a fashion designer since school. And it is quite possible to acquire basic knowledge of cutting and sewing at school.

    4. Burda Magazine

This method is the most popular among seamstresses. You can’t imagine how many seamstresses today sew according to Burda, and this is not something shameful or showing that a person himself is not able to make a pattern. Not at all. I myself often turn to Burda magazines in my work, it’s convenient and saves time. I even recommend this magazine to my students as the most visual and convenient material for a beginning seamstress.

And for many seamstresses it became the first teaching aid cutting and sewing. After all, in the Burda magazine you can find not only simple patterns for beginners in sewing, but also visual master classes. Therefore, if you have no money left for courses and are in trouble free time, you can buy sewing magazines at your nearest kiosk and try to sew your first skirts or pants.

    5. Internet

I considered this method to be the latest method to take cutting and sewing courses for beginners for free, because despite the fact that today you can find any information on the Internet, it is not systematized, and this training option is not suitable for everyone. If you think that this is the fastest and easiest option for learning to sew, then I hasten to disappoint you.

Firstly, all the information on the Internet is scattered, outdated in some places, and lacks order. And in order for knowledge to go well, first of all you need a system. Learning cutting and sewing should take place step by step, from simple to complex. How can a beginner know where to start, and what free master classes should be completed only with a little experience and skills?

Secondly, in order to learn via the Internet, you must have self-discipline, because no one will check behind your back whether you did this or that sewing operation correctly. Therefore, if you decide to choose this method of teaching, it is better to immediately register on handicraft forums in order to be able to ask advice from experienced craftswomen.

Tips for those who decide to take cutting and sewing courses for beginners for free

    1. Approach learning responsibly. After all, we often don’t take what we get for free seriously.

    2. Set aside time in your schedule when you are ready to learn cutting and sewing. At first, two hours a day will be enough. Don't think that you will need years of training to learn how to sew simple things. Not at all! With the right approach, in the first week you will be able to sew yourself or

    3. Set up a place in your apartment for sewing. Where you can put the sewing machine on the table and not move it from place to place. I tell you in more detail about how to arrange a sewing corner at home.

    4. Buy your first sewing magazine, it doesn’t have to be Burda, choose the one you like in terms of the patterns and models presented. Perhaps your friends have such magazines, you can rent them, transfer the patterns onto tracing paper and return them.

Hello, dear readers of the blog “Shaw with me”. I am glad to welcome you to the pages of this blog! And since you are here, you probably wondered how learn to sew and cut clothes from scratch.

I will try to help you with this. After all, it’s very cool and pleasant to sew for yourself and your loved ones.

Firstly, it is economically profitable (you can get the item several times cheaper than you would have bought it).

Secondly, you will make yourself completely exclusive. And you must agree - it’s very nice!

And thirdly, few people have time to go to special courses, and sewing according to someone’s instructions is very convenient. I personally have been doing this for ten years now.

I really hope that these sewing lessons will be able to revive at least one of the above points for you).

So that learn to sew from scratch, you will need the following:

    • paper scissors
    • fabric scissors
    • graph paper
    • tracing paper
    • remnant
    • tailor's ruler scale 1:4
    • right angle square
    • tailor's pins
    • pattern
    • tape measure
    • thread No. 40

Also during the sewing process you will need:

    1. ironer ( thin cloth) for ironing work;
    2. ironing pad;
    3. press for processing slices (reducing slice thickness).

This is just a list of necessary things, and perhaps it scared you a little. I’ll explain now: many of these things can simply be replaced at the initial stage. For example, instead of an ironing pad, you simply roll up a towel (it’s convenient to iron blouse sleeves, shirt sleeves, or side seams on skirts).

A tailor's ruler is sold in any stationery store and is needed in order to draw a drawing in a size reduced by 4 times. You will understand everything in practice.

A pattern is a slightly curved ruler, needed to make some flexible lines when constructing a drawing. They come in different sizes and shapes.

With other concepts, I think there will be no questions.

If you do not plan to take a sewing course, sew on your own at home you need to start with the simplest.

And here you must choose which category you belong to. If you want to sew from scratch, but have never held a needle in your hands, then you will need to go through the basics. And if you have had at least some experience, then it will be a little easier for you).

And then we will try to start with something relatively simple. Of course, it is advisable that you remember at least something from mathematics at school or drawing, since we will have to do a little calculation and drawing, otherwise there is no other way in our business, except perhaps just tracing patterns of your size. I did this myself for many years.

You can find patterns in magazines Burda, Ottobre, etc. It will be easier, maybe. But I must admit that this will greatly limit your possibilities.

It's better to learn how to do it yourself. Moreover, it is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

And we will start with a straight classic skirt - the most ordinary skirt, on the basis of which in the future we will learn how to sew all other models of skirts. And oh, what a variety of them!! My eyes are wide open!! And after the skirts there will be shirts, dresses, trousers and jackets, and a lot of other things!

And I also want to tell you one very important thing: don’t be afraid of anything! Don't be afraid to ruin the fabric, don't be afraid to experiment. This applies to absolutely everything - the choice of fabric, the choice unusual model. The worst thing that can happen is that you will simply end up wasting the price of the damaged fabric. But the invaluable experience and skills that you will gain are worth a lot of money. Therefore, take risks! I always do this. And, as a rule, I have success. I wish the same for you!!!

First, you are faced with the task of determining your size and choosing fabric.

How to make money from a hobby

Nadya learned to sew, and then launched her own cutting and sewing courses for beginners.

    Veronica Netsova

    talked to the business owner

Today the studio in St. Petersburg brings in 150 thousand rubles a month. Here's her story.

    Why sewing

Nadya already had business experience: she opened a studio in St. Petersburg rhythmic gymnastics and a development center for children. But by 2015, the girl closed both projects.

In 2015, Nadya took a sewing lesson from a designer friend, and she liked the process. Six months later, the designer decided to sew only from leather, and Nadya switched to a new teacher, Anastasia. The girls met in class.

Anastasia lived outside the city, and it was inconvenient to travel to her classes. Then, in January 2016, Nadya rented a 30-meter space at the Krasnaya Nit plant. The girls agreed: Nadya pays the rent, and teacher Anastasia sews clothes for her clients and at the same time teaches Nadya for free. The rent cost 8 thousand rubles per month.

Nadya soon realized that many people were interested in learning to sew, not just her. Large schools were already operating in the city, but education in them was limited. The girl decided to open a studio where she can sew in a homely atmosphere and communicate.

    Testing the idea

To teach someone to sew, you need workspaces - tables with machines. Nadya already had one car, but she wanted to equip four places. I bought the missing cars on Avito; it cost 12 thousand rubles. A large professional cutting table cost 30 thousand. To save money, Nadya instead ordered an office table from a furniture manufacturer, but it was four times larger than usual. So she saved 20 thousand.

There were already regular tables and chairs in the room. Nadya did not buy fabric - she asked the students to bring their own, and brought needles and threads from home.

Nadya developed the course program herself. She estimated how many hours it would take to sew one simple product, and added time for the student’s adaptation and training. It turned out to be 25 teaching hours, divided into five lessons. During this time, the students sewed three simple products: jacket, dress and skirt. The course was taught by Anastasia, Nadya’s mentor. Nadya herself had no experience yet.

    Launch of the studio

The number of students grew by word of mouth. In December 2016, Nadya hired a second teacher.

In February 2017, Nadya opened an individual entrepreneur. The girl was expecting a child and understood that the studio alone would not support her, so she called her sister to help. She invested 150 thousand rubles in the launch and took up financial accounting.

The factory premises were noisy and there was a strict access system. Before class, students were collected at a security checkpoint and escorted to the studio. We had to go out to pick up a late girl and leave the others behind. Nadya didn’t like it and decided to move.

Nadya found a 40 m² space in a creative space in the Vasileostrovsky district. The rent cost 24 thousand rubles per month. The cosmetic renovation was completed in 10 days and 180 thousand rubles: the builders leveled and painted the walls, whitewashed the ceiling, laid laminate flooring and installed a new door.

The room was 10 meters larger than the old one, so Nadya added one more workplace: Now five people could study in the studio. We bought new cutting tables and sewing machines so they would last longer. We spent 175 thousand rubles on furniture and equipment.

Nadya introduced several innovations to the program. The girl noticed that if a student is slow or chooses a complex style of product, she does not have time to sew three items during the course. Therefore, the girl increased the training period to 30 hours, and raised the cost of the course to 9800 RUR. Nadya also came up with free sewing: students could come to the studio at any time and sew anything under the guidance of a teacher. An hour of free sewing cost 400 rubles.

The first month in the new studio brought Nadya and her sister 200 thousand rubles.

    How the courses work

Now studio courses are divided into two types: for beginners and experienced craftswomen.

Beginners sew using ready-made patterns. The student selects a model of the desired size, transfers the pattern to tracing paper, cuts it out and transfers it to fabric. Then he cuts out the parts from the fabric and assembles them - pinning them together and basting them on a machine. He tries on the resulting product: if it does not fit and bulges somewhere, it is sutured. In one course you can sew a sweatshirt, a dress and a skirt.

    200,000 R

Nadya and her sister earned money in the first month of work in the new studio

The second course for beginners is on sewing children's clothing. Mothers of girls and boys come to classes who do not want to sew the same thing. That's why Nadya came up with such a scheme. Knitted trousers and a sweatshirt are two must-haves because both girls and boys wear them. The students choose the third product themselves. Mothers of girls often sew a sundress or a dress, mothers of boys - trousers or a shirt.

For those who do not want to take the full course, there are master classes on sewing a sweatshirt, a set of underwear and a coat. Students who do not want to follow the program come for free sewing.

Experienced seamstresses choose a course in modeling and design. It accepts students who know how to sew using ready-made patterns, but want to create patterns according to individual sizes. During the course, five items are sewn: a skirt, trousers, a jacket, a dress and a blouse; they learn how to make fasteners and sew sleeves and collars of various types. Students leave with patterns of products based on their own shapes and an understanding of how to create patterns for someone else.

The studio is open 6 days a week: all days except Friday. Weekends are busy from morning until late evening. On weekdays there are morning, afternoon and evening groups. Every month Nadya creates a new schedule depending on how many students have signed up.

There are four to five groups per month for a course for beginners, one for experienced ones, and one or two for a master class. These are 20-30 new students: some leave after the course, while others stay for free sewing. The children's course is not accepted every month.

Cutting and sewing courses are a seasonal business. A large flow of clients occurs at the beginning of summer and autumn. In the summer, those who want to spend their vacation profitably sign up. Nadya relies on intensive courses - people study there every day and complete a month-long course in a few days. This is especially suitable for students from the regions who combine courses with city excursions. Spring is a low season. At this time, the studio pays for itself, but does not always make a profit.

    Let's start from the beginning

IN sewing There are several main professions: seamstress, tailor, fashion designer. Don’t think that once you learn to sew, you can only be a seamstress. Tailors and fashion designers know how to not only sew clothes with high quality, but also participate in the entire process of creating clothes - from idea to sewing.

Let's understand the terminology. Don't be scared when you see the wordfashion designer. This is the name given to a specialist whocreates patterns, knows how to select fabrics and sew professionally. He selects materials and decorative elements in such a way that even the most daring designer’s ideas can be realized.

So, choose what you want to learn and we will help you navigate.

    2) How to learn cutting and sewing

    Cutting and sewing courses

Is it possible to learn to sew and cut from scratch on your own?

Yes - on the Internet you can find many sites with detailed instructions, patterns and tips. They will help you learn how to cut and sew on your own, even if you are starting from scratch.

Look for informational articles with photos or video tutorials that detail each step when cutting things. Nowadays, authors on any thematic resources conduct entire courses of video lessons, where they talk about types of fabrics, tools, types of figures, classic mistakes of beginners, and much more.

They can help you learn to sew and cut from scratch yourself

    • thematic websites/forums about sewing;
    • sewing magazines (Burda, ShiK);
    • video tutorials on YouTube.

Of course, you may not be able to become a professional tailor by studying only at home, but you will definitely learn how to master basic cutting skills and get good at stitching.

    3) Tools needed for sewing

Beginners will only need the basics necessary materials. A sewing machine and cutting table will be provided to you during the course. Most organizers allow you to sew for free, even after completing the courses. Which is very convenient if you are not yet ready to buy your own sewing machine.

Working tools that beginners will need to sew

    1) Sharp tailor's scissors - one ring of the handle is noticeably larger than the other, and the blades are sharpened relative to the handle at a certain, not right angle. A large handle is needed so that you can grab it with four fingers, since sometimes you have to apply significant force. By the way, tailor's scissors are produced not only for right hand, but also for the left.

    2) Threads - good threads very important for quality sewing. We categorically do not recommend using old Soviet-style cotton threads - this is the reason for poor, uneven stitching and frequent thread breaks. Specify in detail the technological features of sewing threads different types boring and useless. One has only to say that for sewing modern fabrics it is better to use synthetic threads marked “100% polyester” on the spool. They have much better twist, they are durable, elastic and thin, and easily glide over the parts of sewing machines and overlockers.

    3) Needles for hand sewing - used for sweeping or repairing clothing. They come in sizes from No. 1 to No. 12, with No. 1 being the thinnest. Choosing a needle for hand sewing is the same as for machine stitching, focusing on the fabric.

Which basic needles for hand sewing should a beginner choose?

    4) Needles for machine sewing - purposeneedles are indicated by letters in the name of its marking. For example, needle 130/705H-M- for thin dense fabrics.

    5) Tailor's pins- they directly interact with the fabric, it is important to choose them correctly. Otherwise, you risk accidentally ruining your future product.

    6) A piece of chalk or tailor's chalk - Some craftsmen use soap remnants instead of special chalk, which remain on the farm. With this soap you can make thin, invisible lines that easily disappear after washing the finished product.

    7) Paper for transferring the pattern- here there will be a convenient option for everyone. Some people use tracing paper, some use plastic film, and some use greenhouse film. It is important that the material is comfortable for you. It is better to transfer it to dense material if you plan to use the pattern often.4

    8) Measuring tape and rulers- it’s better to take 1.5 meters of tape. This length is enough to take measurements for all things. It's not so simple with rulers. It will take several different options.

    • For cutting fabric and constructing the main lines of drawings it is very usefuleasy to use meter ruler.
    • To create drawings of patterns on a scale of 1:4, stock up cutter's ruler, it is also useful for main constructions when they are small in size.
    • To draw right angles and lines at an angle of 45 degrees, it is better to use isosceles square.

How to choose a sewing machine

A good sewing machine is the most expensive and most profitable investment for a tailor or seamstress.

If you want to develop as a professional craftsman in the future, seriously think about purchasing a good sewing machine. A high-quality machine with all the functions and types of stitches necessary at the learning stage costs 6-10 thousand rubles. At good choice she will become your reliable friend for several years.

Look for your machine among the leaders in the production of sewing machines. Among European manufacturers, these are:Bernina, Pfaff, Husqvarna, Asian manufacturing companies –Janome, Brother, Juki, Jaguar. Products of the American brand are also appreciatedSinger.

We studied reviews on Yandex.Market and found out that

During training, you can buy a machine second-hand for training, and then purchase a more professional unit. If you still have your grandmother's old car, then try to start on it.

It's no secret that important part The creation of any costume is a pattern. It is also the most difficult. You won't be happy with a crooked seam, but fixing it is much easier than re-cutting the entire suit if you made a mistake with the calculations.

We have prepared tips for beginners that will help you avoid serious mistakes. Remember them and make this practice automatic.

    1. Take measurements accurately. Understand the types of men and women female figures. Watch video tutorials on how to take measurements correctly for different parts bodies. Then practice on your family members, or even animals.
    2. Create a pattern according to your measurements. Patterning is a labor-intensive process where you definitely can’t do something “by eye.” Specialized magazines will help a beginner to build a pattern, where there are already ready-made patterns and all that remains is to transfer them to the fabric. Before starting work, you should watch video tutorials and start only with simple products.
    3. Learn the basic terms. You will search for sewing information, watch videos, and study magazines with patterns. Be prepared that you will have to know and use thematic vocabulary and understand the terms in advance. For example, find out how a lobe thread differs from a cross thread and why a cutting pad is needed.
    4. Practice a straight line. Take the leftover fabrics and sew them together as your heart desires. Try making your own round potholders (a perfect circle is not that easy!), home textiles, clothes for toys and animals.
    5. Use thematic resources- get inspired, improve your skills, learn life hacks
    6. Find a mentor. Most often, people stop learning when the material is unclear and there is no help. Find an idol or mentor whose work you will be inspired by. Choose new ideas, experiment with patterns and outfits for yourself and your family. Don’t be afraid to write to special group blogs or ask questions under videos on topics that interest you.
