A few months ago it was my husband's birthday. In this regard, I decided that in addition to the main gift, I wanted to give him something special, made with my own hands. The choice fell on a pencil holder, since Danil is interested in calligraphy and, accordingly, has a bunch of accessories for this type of creativity.
How to make a pencil holder with your own hands: master class
I'll show you how to make a pencil holder with cute characters from the cartoon "My Neighbor Totoro". In fact, this technology can be used for any type of pencil holder.
To create a pencil holder you will need:
- Tin can (from any canned food)
- Any fabric of your choice for wrapping the jar (I used fleece and Miki fleece)
- Felt for finishing
- Threads in the color of the fabric
- Scissors
- Glue with a thin spout or glue gun
- Plastic eyes
- A piece of padding polyester
First of all you will need to measure:
- circumference of the can,
- height of the can,
- bottom diameter.
In accordance with the measurements obtained, cut out 2 pieces of rectangles from the fabric with the parameters: (can height + seam allowance 0.5 cm) x (circumference length + allowance).
For both rectangles, first sew the back seam (with a “back needle” seam or sewing machine) to form a closed surface. Sew the bottom to the rectangle along the contour. Turn one part out and leave the other.
Set the resulting cylinders aside. Now cut out 18 pairs of animal parts from the fabric - in my case, small totori. I don’t provide patterns, since it’s easy to draw the outline yourself - an oval shape with ears))
Sew paired parts together, you will get 9 animals (don’t forget about the holes for turning them inside out).
In place of the future eyes, draw dots and make crosswise cuts, as in the photo.
Turn the animals inside out and stuff them with padding polyester.
Now add a little glue along the contour into the resulting holes. Be careful - next you will have to insert the eyes into the holes. Insert until the side of the eyes is completely buried in the fur.
Sew up the hole at the bottom.
Ooh, little eye
Cover the jar with padding polyester parts using an over-the-edge seam. This is necessary to prevent the pencil holder from knocking on the table. You can skip this step if you wish.
First, sew the edges of the padding polyester wrapped around the can. Sew the bottom as well.
Pull one of the cylinder parts onto the outside of the can. In my case, it does not reach the top edge a little - a special effect.
I also put a padding pad at the bottom of the pencil holder (I glued it so that it wouldn’t move out).
Place the second (unturned) cylinder inside the stand. If desired, you can also add a little glue to the bottom to keep the inside in place.
Sew one cylinder to the other with a blind seam.

Glue or sew all the animals over the entire surface.
Cut out several leaves from felt and embroider characteristic lines on them using a backstitch. Glue the leaves to the resulting pencil holder. You can also embroider patterns on the bunnies themselves.

A very fun way to make a pencil holder is to take a jar, liquid acrylic paints, paper, a plate, string and a faux petal with a glue gun.
Pour paint into the jar and shake. Drain off any remaining paint and let dry. File edges if necessary. Wrap the carving with cord and decorate with a leaf - voila

The method is identical to the previous one, only at the end you will need to apply a face with a black permanent marker.

What can pencil holders be made from? As it turns out, people make them from almost everything: paper, cardboard, salt dough, cans, books, pencils, clay, papier-mâché, and even made from simple logs and twigs!
Pencil holder made from a sleeve
Instructions for making a convenient pencil holder with your own hands:
We take them in quantities of 5-6 pieces. You can choose any size. Next, we measure its length and circumference in order to select colored paper according to the necessary parameters, which is what we do after the measurement.
Then, to make your composition look complete, you can cut out some kind of cloud, or an ordinary circle or square, depending on what you like best.
Glue multi-colored coasters onto the pallet and decorate them however you want. You can glue small flowers, you can simply decorate them with felt-tip pens or paints, everything is at your discretion.
Salt dough pencils
Material for preparing the dough itself and the pencil holder itself: flour, water, salt, PVA glue, a cardboard jar for the frame, scissors, a button, gouache, a brush, acrylic varnish, a piece of decorative rope or corrugated paper and a toothbrush.
And now the master class on creating a pencil holder with your own hands.
First thing you need to do is knead salt dough. This is done very easily. Pour a glass of flour and a glass of salt, add some water and knead it all until the modeling consistency we need. Then, so that our dough becomes beautiful color, separate part of it, add beige paint and mix again.
Next, roll out the cake to about 10-15 millimeters thick. Apply PVA glue to the outside of the jar and wrap it with ready-made dough. We cut off the excess and smooth the joints with a wet brush.
After this, we create a dotted texture using a brush. That is, we take a toothbrush and make small and barely noticeable dots over the entire surface of the craft.
Next we knead the brown dough and, just like with the main dough, roll it into a flat cake 10-15 millimeters thick. Cut a strip 5 centimeters wide from it and glue it to the bottom of the jar.
Next, we make the base for the eyes: we make two circles from white dough and glue them to the craft, respectively, where you want the owl’s eyes to be. Then we make a beak from brown dough and glue it a little lower between the eyes. We make eyes from turquoise and glue them to the white base for the eyes.
Now we need to make a bow so that by the end of everything we do, it has time to dry. To do this, we roll out 8 strips of pink dough, twist them into 4 thin flagella and connect everything into a bow. Place it on a flat surface for about two hours and continue working on the main parts of the craft.
Pay attention! 
More precisely, we make droplet-shaped wings for our owl from brown dough and attach them to the structure on the sides.
Now, to make the craft look more beautiful, we make a beige flagellum and glue it to the neck of the jar. This way the transition will look less abrupt and more accurate.
We put the craft for a day in a warm and dry place. And the next day we are already doing the finishing touches. We paint the lower part and wings in brown and add some white specks.
We draw the pupils and eyelashes, naturally, with black gouache, wait for the details to dry completely, and add white highlights to the eyes.
We glue the already dried bow over the owl’s wing. Glue a button with a bow from a strip of corrugated paper of any color to the lace.
Pay attention!
And the final touch, we cover our owlet with varnish and wait until it is completely dry. The salt dough pencil is ready!
Small and cute pencil holder in the shape of an apple
For it you will need a small oval plastic bottle, red acrylic paint, gold string, a sheet, a plate, a nail file and a glue gun.
Manufacturing instructions:
Pour acrylic into the bottle and shake it so that the entire inside turns red. Then we drain the remains, put the bottle on a plate and wait for it to dry completely.
If necessary, remove excess paint and file the edges of the neck with a nail file. And the last stage: wrap the neck with golden lace and glue the leaf. And the pencil holder - the apple is ready!
