• Dimensions of the sides of pillows in a crib for newborns. Sewing upper decorative covers. What are bumpers in a newborn crib?

    18.07.2019

    When a baby comes into the family, parents buy a lot of things they have never heard of before. Crib bumpers are one of those things. What are they needed for? What kind of sides are there? Is it possible to sew the sides of a newborn crib with your own hands? How to choose the material and decide on the size?

    Why do you need bumpers in a newborn crib?

    A baby bed is most often made of wood, durable plastic or metal. These are hard materials that can easily hit a child and cause injury. Since small children are very mobile, and coordination and orientation in space have not yet been fully mastered, the risk of injury when hitting the bed bars is quite high. To avoid this trouble, bumpers are needed.

    The sides are a kind of soft pads that are attached to the sides and head of the crib, protecting the child from impact. In addition to its main purpose, this useful accessory performs a number of other functions:

    • They protect the baby from bright sunlight and drafts that can enter the bed through the bars.
    • They create a cozy atmosphere in the crib so that the child feels more comfortable. It has been proven that babies are calmer in confined spaces and are afraid of large open spaces. This is associated with the memory of intrauterine life.
    • Entertain the child. Bright drawings develop the baby's vision and occupy his leisure time.
    • Development. Often the sides are equipped with various tweeters, “rustles,” and elements with different textures. This makes it possible to turn the accessory into a full-fledged educational toy.

    Types of bumpers for cribs

    Today, manufacturers and hand-made craftsmen offer many types of bumpers for cribs:

    • The classic version of 4 parts (two pieces for the sides, one for the headboard and one for the legs).
    • A solid side that runs along the entire perimeter of the bed and has only one joint. Similar options can be found in Ikea stores.
    • Sides in the form of pillows that are attached to the crib with ties. Pillows can be made in the form of separate elements or sewn together.

    Each version of the sides can be made in various variations using various equipment sewing, patterns, fastening methods, shapes and sizes.

    Up to what age do you need bumpers in a crib?

    You can use this useful accessory from birth until the moment your baby starts trying to get out of bed. If the mother notices that the baby has begun to climb, trying to get out of the crib, then the sides must be removed immediately! This is necessary so that the child does not use them as a device to get out.

    The child may still sleep restlessly and hit the bars, but a small bruise is better than falling from a decent height when climbing over the side of the bed

    The parents themselves must determine the age of the baby when bumpers in the crib are no longer needed, depending on the child’s development and his abilities.

    How to sew bumpers for a crib

    Buying beautiful bumpers for a crib in a store today is not a problem. There are options for every taste and budget. Many parents prefer to buy sets of canopy borders and bed linen, made in the same style and color scheme. If you are not satisfied with standard sides, you can make them to order from hand-made craftsmen. Handmade always looks more refined and original. But such pleasure will be expensive. Much more interesting and safer for family budget try sewing bumpers yourself. Moreover, it is not at all difficult if you have necessary tools (sewing machine), a little skill and patience.

    Preparation

    First you need to choose a fabric.

    Since the accessory will come into contact with the baby’s skin, the fabrics should be of the highest quality, dense and natural:

    • Calico.
    • Satin.
    • Flannel.

    The fabric should have a pleasant, calm shade and a large pattern so that the child can look at it. When purchasing fabric, you need to think not only about the main fabric, but also about the lining. This is necessary to sew the sides with removable upper covers, which can be removed and washed at any time without having to wash the entire product.

    Tip: Before you start sewing, you need to wash the fabrics. Natural fiber always shrinks when washed. And the quantity of material must be purchased taking into account shrinkage.

    In addition to fabric, you need to take care of soft filler for the sides. The filler can be padding polyester, padding polyester, thin foam rubber.

    It is best to choose synthetic roll fill that can be washed without compromising its quality

    And also for needlework you will need:

    • Sewing machine. Diligent needlewomen can sew the borders by hand, this is possible if you have hand sewing skills.
    • Scissors.
    • Needle.
    • Centimeter or long ruler.
    • Tailor pins.
    • Chalk, soap, pencil or marker for cutting.
    • Paper for making patterns. If you have good sewing experience, you can cut directly on the fabric.
    • Threads in the color of the main fabric.
    • Zippers (40 cm long) or buttons. They are needed for removable covers that can be washed. If the sides are sewn without covers, then fasteners are not needed.
    • Braid, ribbons for ties. The ties can be sewn from the main fabric.
    • Depending on the model and imagination, you may need various other decorative elements(various buttons, lace, felt appliques, etc.).

    How to decide on the size and style of bumpers

    In most cases, the sizes of cribs are standard: width - 60 cm, height - 55 cm, length - 120 cm. To sew the sides for a standard bed, you will need approximately 3.6 meters of fabric. If the sides are sewn with covers, then the same amount of lining fabric is needed. If you have doubts about your abilities, it is better to buy a larger piece so that you have the opportunity to correct mistakes. And also excess fabric can be useful for finishing, for example, decorative frills.

    Tip: When making sides self made It’s better to immediately take care of buying suitable fabric for bedding for the crib. Such a beautiful set will look more harmonious and neat. There will be no shame in giving this set as a gift for the birth of a baby.

    Dimensions of standard classic 4-piece sides:

    • 2 parts 30 cm high and 60 cm wide.
    • 2 parts 30 cm high and 120 cm wide.

    For beginning craftswomen, it is best to focus on this option, since it is the easiest to perform and sewing will not take much time.

    If the crib has non-standard sizes and shape, you will have to take measurements first. For example, a round crib will need two sets of sides, since over time it will transform into an oval one.

    For this type of bed, it is best to choose pillow-shaped bumpers

    The pillow bumpers look beautiful, and you can immediately sew the number of pillows that you need for an oval crib, and add or add them as the baby grows and the bed transforms; this is much easier than sewing two separate sets of classic bumpers.

    It is better to sew pillows with removable covers, and the size and shape can be chosen arbitrarily, based on the size of the crib and the desire of the needlewoman. For example, bumpers in the form of pillow houses are very popular.

    With such pillows you can decorate not only the crib, but also other furniture in the child’s room, for example, a sofa or chair; this will make the nursery interior more harmonious

    The situation is similar with bassinets for babies. The cradle is not always sold complete with bedding. And finding a suitable set of sides is generally an almost impossible task.

    A good way to decorate a cradle beautifully is to try and sew the bed linen and bumpers yourself or buy them to order. The sizes of the accessories, of course, will be non-standard, but the issue can be easily resolved by careful measurements and the construction of a simple pattern

    Patterns for sides

    If mom decided to make the sides in the form of pillows, then a pattern is not needed. Just cut out the squares the right size. For a standard rectangular crib you will need 12 pillows measuring 30x30 cm.

    Houses can be sewn using this pattern. The size is chosen arbitrarily, based on the size and shape of the bed

    For standard classic sides of 4 elements, the following patterns are suitable:

    Pattern of simple rectangular sides

    Pattern of bumpers and bed linen for a crib

    Note: Before sewing, it is better to carefully measure the crib and adjust the dimensions if necessary.

    The process of sewing classic sides

    Cutting

    You need to prepare the fabric and filler. Patterns must be made in advance. The patterns are carefully transferred to the fabric. Don't forget to leave 1-1.5 cm seam allowances. If bumpers are sewn with covers, then you need to cut two sets of fabric - for the covers and the lining.

    Filling in the form of rolled padding polyester or foam rubber is cut out in the same way, but you need to reduce the size of the patterns by 1.5-2 cm depending on the thickness of the foam rubber so that the filler fits into the case. If the sides are sewn in the form of pillows, then the filling is simply stuffed, there is no need to cut anything out.

    Sewing sides

    The lining fabric is folded right side inward and the cover is sewn around the perimeter. You need to leave a hole to place the filler inside. After this, the cover is turned inside out and foam rubber is inserted. The hole must be carefully sewn up. It is better to do this manually with a hidden seam. A similar procedure is done for each side (4 pieces in total).

    Sewing ties

    Ties can be sewn in two ways - simple and with Velcro. Ready-made braid or ribbons can act as simple ties. They can also be sewn from fabric.

    This is what a Velcro fastener looks like. This option is not so difficult to implement, but is much more convenient than conventional ties

    The sizes and number of ties are chosen arbitrarily. Typically at least 20 fasteners are required. 4 for short sides at the head and near the legs, 6 for long sides for the sides of the bed. To better secure the bumpers, you can make more ties.

    Beautiful ties are made from satin ribbons. The length of the fastening element is chosen independently, but it is better to make the ribbons longer. This makes the bow easier to tie and looks more beautiful.

    Note: If you are sewing pillow sides, you need to make at least two fasteners for each.

    Sewing upper decorative covers

    The upper covers, which can be removed and washed, are sewn around the perimeter, with the front side inward. You need to outline the location of the ties in advance and baste them in order to sew them into the main seams. Velcro fasteners also need to be sewn in advance, while the parts of the cover are not yet sewn together. The inner edges must be finished with an overlocker or overcast by hand. You need to leave a hole (about 40 cm) for the fastener. The fastener can be made in the form of a zipper or regular buttons. Then you need to turn out the covers and make a fastener. Ready!

    Decorating the sides

    You can decorate the sides different ways: decorate with ribbons, bows, large bright buttons, appliqués, rhinestones, frills, etc. If the edges around the perimeter are decorated with frills or lace, then you need to baste them in advance and sew them into the main seams at the fourth stage to make the product look neater. Depending on the design, lace and frills can also be sewn on top of the front side of the cover.

    When I needed (and wanted) a bumper for the crib, the store-bought options looked defective, and their price was even more disgusting. Internet searches resulted in several viable options. Each of them has its own pros and cons. Choose what suits and pleases you.

    OPTION No. 1

    How to sew a bumper for a crib

    Having visited many stores in order to buy a bumper for a crib of exactly the configuration I would like, and not finding one, I decided that it would be much easier and cheaper to sew such a bumper myself. In my model I could do everything I needed. This is what ended up happening.

    And now - detailed instructions to making a bumper with your own hands:

    You will need fabric - 5 - 5.5 m (width 110 cm) and foam rubber - 2 m (width 150 cm). The thickness of the foam is 1 cm. The amount of fabric depends on its width. The fabric needs to be washed for it to shrink.

    Cutting the fabric in accordance with PATTERN. In principle, I didn’t make a pattern - I just drew the crib directly on the fabric using a pencil. I advise you to measure your crib first, as sizes may vary.

    Sew by sewing in a frill. You don't sew up one edge. You don't have to do the frill. And you can make it either from ribbon in color, or from the same fabric.

    Mark the foam rubber. I drew with a thin felt-tip pen. Cut it out. The size of the foam should be slightly smaller than the size of the fabric - about 0.5 cm on each side.

    Stuff the foam into the case.
    When I sewed the headboard in the first version, I cut out the entire foam rubber for the entire headboard. And then I got tired of putting it in the case and adjusting it to size. Therefore, in the second option, I cut the foam rubber vertically in half, and accordingly made a seam on the cover and it looked like two halves.

    For the same reasons, the solid sidewall is divided into 2 parts by a seam. In the first version, I left the side seams unsewn and realized that it was much easier not to sew the bottom - it was easier to stuff the foam rubber in.

    Sew up the bottom(what was not stitched). You can use a machine, but I sewed it by hand, since you can quickly rip it open and wash it at any time.

    Sew on ribbon ties. It is better if at this moment you already have a crib at hand so that you know exactly where to sew. But as a last resort, you can sew on the corners and in the middle.

    In addition to the whole side panel, I also sewed the same thing, but cut in half - two separate halves. You can put it in a crib, you can have 1 part on the side, the second as a second headboard, or you can just take it with you as a rug - in case your baby needs to be swaddled.

    Comment: It is better to do this option separately: a foam pillow and a colored outer cover, since the foam holds its shape more easily and does not slide down. And for ease of insertion into the case, the foam rubber can be covered with satin or lining fabric.

    How to sew bumpers/bumpers for a baby crib - master class, diagram, patterns, description

    Time: 10-12 hours
    Cost of materials: 400-500 rubles.

    Textile:
    I chose the fabric calico in the store at the Trekhgornaya Manufactory. They have a good choice children's colors at very low prices. It’s true that calico is a bit harsh for children’s bedding, but for borders it’s best option- the fabric is smooth, not faded, shrinkage 5%. More will be needed padding polyester and Velcro. The quantity depends on the thickness of the padding polyester and the size of your crib. The store also had baby calico with synthetic padding already attached on one side - an excellent option that simplifies sewing borders.

    Scheme and Patterns:
    An approximate diagram of the sides, designed for a crib with a sleeping area of 120x60cm.

    The pattern is given with allowances for seams and the volume of the sides (1cm for the sides, for the remaining parts - 0.5cm):

    • short side - 4 rectangles 43x64cm
    • long side - 4 rectangles 38x126cm
    • ties - 20 strips 7x53cm
    • Velcro fasteners - 16 rectangles 7x10cm
    • short ruffles - 2 strips 90x12 cm
    • long ruffles - 2 stripes 180x12 cm

    1) thick padding polyester 180 cm long (usually it is 150 cm wide, that’s enough).
    2) white calico, at least 135 cm wide and 235 cm long.
    3) colored calico with a width of at least 135 cm and a length of 235 cm.
    4) Velcro, buttons, threads.
      • Mark the Velcro locations on the side patterns in accordance with the design of the crib.
      • Sew the soft half of the Velcro onto the fastener.
      • Sew the prickly halves of Velcro onto the side.
      • Fold in the fourth unsewn side of the fastener and sew along this side to the sides.
        Ties:
        Fold each rectangle in half lengthwise long side, stitch on both sides, turn inside out, iron.
        Ruffles:
        Fold each strip in half along the long side and gather the ruffle to the length of each side.
        Sides:
      • Place the two patterns right sides together. Don't forget to add a ruffle and ties to the top side.
      • Sew from the top and sides, turn inside out.
      • Place a layer of padding polyester inside and stitch the bottom. You can stitch the padding polyester at the same time as the top ruffle, if the padding polyester is not very thick.
      • Stepping back approximately 4 cm from the edge, make a seam around the perimeter of the entire side (blue line in the diagram). This will prevent the padding polyester from bunching up when washing.
        Source: blog "My Sunshine" at sunnymichael.blogspot.com
        Comment: Instead of padding polyester, you can use holofiber. This is almost the same as padding polyester, but Holofiber does not need to be quilted, it does not bunch up when washed.
        Crib bumper from Yulyasha
        Double side with a padding polyester base, covered with white calico and a colored top cover. This design allows you to wash only the cover. In addition, several different beautiful covers can be sewn onto a padding polyester base.
        In the photo (from left to right): side, fastening in the center and side of the bed, patterns (click to enlarge).
        The dimensions of the crib are 60*120 cm. The height of the side is 30 cm. On the side where the baby lies with his head, the height is 45 cm.
        You will need: If you want to make a side with a height greater than 30 cm, then you will need more fabric.
        All descriptions are given without seam allowances.
        From colored calico we cut 2 canvases each (make sure that the pattern on both canvases is upside down) see Fig. 1:
          • 1) size 180*30 cm, - part A
            2) size 140*30 cm, - part B
            3) 60 cm long, at the top there is a semicircle, the extreme points of which are at a height of 30 cm, and the middle point is at a height of 45 cm. - part C
          4) In addition, you need a long strip of fabric 7 cm wide (this is for frills, the strip should be long) Fig. 2. - Detail D
      • Sequence of work:
          • 1) Fold a strip 7 cm wide along its length with the right side up, make folds and stitch them at the bottom (from the cut edge). See Figure 2.
            2) Sew parts A and B to part C on both sides. For each part C there is one part A and B. See fig. 3.
            3) We fold our canvases with the right sides, put our frill inside, baste and sew. How to attach the edge of a strip.
            4) Cut out 8 strips 6*20 cm and 8 strips 6*10 cm. Don’t forget to allow seams. Fold it in half lengthwise, fold the seams, sew, and attach Velcro 3 cm wide and 1.5-2 cm long to one end. See Fig. 4.
            5) On one of the canvases we attach Velcro (long), on the other side - Velcro from Velcro. See fig. 3.
            6) On the same canvas (on the outer side of the side) we attach Velcro from Velcro, and sew stripes (holders) next to one end. At the same time, we sew long strips (20 cm long) to the place where the side is attached at the corners of the bed, and short strips (10 cm long) in the middle of the sides; with these strips we will attach the side to the bars of the crib. See fig. 5.
            7) Turn the fabrics left side up, stitch the bottom and one side (at part B). On the side of part C, fold the edge, baste loops on one side and sew buttons on the other side. It looks like a pillowcase with a fastener on the side of side C. See fig. 6.
          8) We sew additional support tapes to throw over the top bar of the bed. Otherwise, the side shrinks and gathers at the bottom.
      • In addition, you need to sew the side itself. The details are the same as the pillowcase, but you don't need the frill strip or the Velcro strip. We cut out one piece A, B and C from padding polyester. From white fabric (calico) we cut out two pieces A, B and C.
        We sew together the details of the padding polyester. We sew a pillowcase from fabric, insert padding polyester into it, and sew up the edges. It is necessary to sew in several places on top of the pillowcase. It looks like a quilted blanket. This is the side itself. We put our colored pillowcase on top and attach it to the bed.
        Source: solnushki.ru
      Comment: It is inconvenient to stuff padding polyester sausage into the case. It would be easier to make the synthetic padding parts separate, then stuffing them into the case would be easier and faster. But this is only for those who are not too lazy to sew on a couple of extra buttons. Well, instead of padding polyester, you can use holofiber, it does not come off when washing.

    How to sew a bumper for a crib from lyudmilk@
    Measure the dimensions on the crib, then multiply what you get - height and length - by two: and then work with these dimensions.

    Go to the store, look for cheerful chintz, calico, knitwear or flannel, and see if the height of your product is the same as the width of the chosen fabric, then buy the length that you intended (I think it will work out that way) + 20-30 centimeters for the ties .

    Now find out if they have padding polyester or holofiber, choose the thickest one and assume that you will fold it in half (again, if the width coincides with the height of the sides, take the intended length).

    It’s easy to sew and without patterns, all the seams are straight. You can make a winter version from flannel.

    Showing the beginning of the crib set for little man, who is still playing around in his mother’s tummy.
    At the ultrasound they said the gender, but... There are all sorts of surprises, so we decided to choose a universal color scheme. I really like this combination (orange-light green-linen). It turns out bright, but not too much.

    This is not the entire set, there will be more items.

    As long as there is a cover, an adapter pillow and pockets.

    A flannelette blanket was placed inside the bedspread. Size 120*82 cm.

    The adapter pillow is quite long - 180 cm. Inside there is synthetic down. It is expected that it will be located along the edges of the crib, protecting the baby from encountering hard walls. Later, you can use it to limit the person’s field of activity on a large bed, sofa or on the floor.

    The size of the canvas with pockets is 60*70 cm. Inside there is padding polyester. According to the idea, the locomotive will be in tune with the large locomotive on the sides (which are in the plans). I made the pockets large, which in my opinion is more practical. They fit diapers, toys, and books.... There is a Velcro fastening on top. There are 3 of them - they hold the entire structure. There are ties on the sides for extra support.

    Sides

    The birth of a child is always an exciting event for young parents. When a baby is born, adults will have significantly less free time. There is a completely reasonable explanation for this. All personal time will be devoted to a small miracle. Therefore, almost all future parents try to prepare everything necessary for the baby in advance.

    Crib bumpers are very important for a newborn baby. They will help protect your child from bumps and bruises when your baby learns to stand up and walk in his bed. As a rule, in every children's store you can buy a set with sides for a crib. However, this purchase will cost the young family a pretty penny. This set is quite expensive for the budget of a young family.

    The way out of this situation can be bumpers sewn yourself. The process is not complicated at all, and it won’t take you much time. Another advantage is that you choose the colors yourself.

    If desired, you can use a pillowcase and duvet cover in a similar manner. This way, you will have a whole set for the crib (you can see how to sew a sheet with an elastic band) for your little miracle.

    The first thing you need to start with is to measure the crib. To find out required amount material for making the sides, you need to multiply the perimeter of the crib (the length of all sides) by the desired height of the sides.

    We purchase necessary materials for sewing borders

    Knowing what footage you need, you can go to the store to select fabric. If the gender of your baby has not yet been determined, we recommend buying neutral shades (yellow, green, lilac). It is better to choose natural fabric for the sides: cotton or linen.

    When purchasing material, do not forget about the filler for the sides. It can be 1 cm thick foam rubber, holofiber or padding polyester. You will also need frills, bows, ribbons for ties and other decorations for your work.

    Uncover

    After everything you need has been purchased, you can start cutting. The number of details for the pattern of the sides may vary, depending on the chosen model, the height of the crib and the amount of fabric. You can sew the sides from 4, 3, 2 or even 1 part.

    Usually, the sides are sewn from 4 separate parts and, if necessary, each part is attached to the sides of the crib using ribbons, ties, Velcro, etc.

    Let's look at cutting and sewing 4-piece borders.

    Since the crib is a rectangle, we need to build two pattern parts:

    A long side, representing the appearance of a rectangle, where one side is equal to the length of the crib, and the other side is equal to the height of the side of the bed minus 15-20 cm (for example, 120 x 60 cm).

    A short side, where one side is equal to the width of the crib, and the second is equal to the height of the side of the bed minus 15-20 cm (for example, 60 x 60 cm).

    The number of cut parts in this case should be 8 or 4 (4 – if the parts are cut with a fold).

    The fabric must first be decated - that is, washed in hot water, and then ironed with a hot iron from the wrong side. This is done to ensure that the sides do not become deformed during operation.

    Using soap or a pencil, trace the patterns of the parts on the fabric, adding 1 cm seam allowances on each side. Cut them out.

    We also cut out 4 parts from foam rubber, 1 cm less on each side of the main parts. Many experts do not recommend using foam rubber and padding polyester for children's products, citing the fact that such materials contain toxic substances. It's up to you to decide which filler to choose. As an alternative, we suggest usinginstead of padding polyester and foam rubber, cut out parts from an old blanket or coat.

    Then start sewing. Place the two pieces of each side together in pairs with right sides facing inward and stitch on three sides. Leave one side unstitched. The filler you choose will be inserted through it. Be very careful about the quality of the seams. Cut the threads and turn the collar right side out. Now insert the piece of foam rubber (or other filler). Sew or topstitch the open seam. Do the same with the rest of the details.

    Try on the sides of the bed, mark the places where the ribbon ties will be sewn. Sew or topstitch the ties.

    After all the edges are sewn, you can start decorating the product. Trim the edges of the sides with ruffles, and make bows from the ribbons.

    Remember that the beauty of the work depends on your imagination and perseverance. The products you make will delight you and your baby for a long time.

    When a family is preparing for the arrival of a baby, parents are often overwhelmed by how much they may need to care for. The choice of products for babies is huge, but not all are necessary and useful. These do not include bumpers in a crib for newborns, which will save you from the need to cover your baby with pillows and protect the child’s health from drafts, shocks and other troubles.

    What are crib bumpers?

    Children's furniture is only a small part of what the modern industry offers for caring for a newborn. It will definitely need a mattress, hanging toys and such a convenient thing as protective bumpers or sides. They are the same mattresses, but thinner, designed to cover the walls of the sleeping bed. The sides for the crib are made of fabric, inside of which a special soft filler is placed. They are tied to the bars of the crib with ribbons or attached with Velcro.

    Size

    Protective sides for newborn cribs are often offered along with furniture, but if you need to sew or buy them separately, focus on the most common size of 120 by 60 centimeters. The average height is 40 centimeters. Elements for different walls may differ in height. When choosing, you should start from what is preferable: so that the child has maximum protection (if he is very mobile), or good review(high sides will close the baby’s room).

    The choice of fabric is no less important than the height of the walls or their pattern. After all, the product must be completely safe, not cause allergies in the baby, easy to wash, dry quickly, and breathable. The best natural fabrics for this:

    • cotton;
    • flannel;
    • chintz;
    • calico

    Filler

    Filling material is another important aspect when choosing baby accessories. Pay attention to the advantages and disadvantages of the most popular options:

    • Foam rubber. This material is good for its wear resistance, but bad because it retains moisture and takes a long time to dry, which can contribute to the development of microbes inside the fabric.
    • Sintepon. This is one of the best fillers. It dries quickly, washes well without deformation. It is important that the padding polyester is stitched, otherwise it may roll.
    • Holofiber. The new filler, whose properties are not inferior to padding polyester, is hypoallergenic.
    • Hallcon. This is an elastic, wear-resistant synthetic material that retains heat well.
    • Periotec is a hypoallergenic elastic fiber.
    • Polyester. This fiber also does not cause allergies and retains its shape well. Does not absorb odors or moisture.

    How to choose crib bumpers

    In order to buy bumpers for a crib for your baby and not go wrong, you need to take into account the characteristics of the product itself, as well as the character of your child. For calm children The sides can be chosen more for beauty; for more active ones, they should be higher, thicker, in order to really serve as protection from impacts on the crib. Among other criteria, pay attention to:

    • Upholstery and filling material. Choose only natural materials. The characteristics of synthetic products must state that they do not cause allergies.
    • Location. The size of the bumpers depends on how much you want to cover the child's bed. If we are talking about one side and the headboard, it will be a single piece about 190 centimeters long. U-shaped ones cover three sides and can consist of separate parts, pillows. The protection, 360 centimeters long, completely covers all the sides around the perimeter of the crib. If you have oval furniture, it is better to take a solid element.
    • The height of the sides of the crib. It ranges from 30 to 50 centimeters. Which one to choose depends on the height of the furniture, on the parents’ desire to shelter the baby more reliably from drafts or to leave him a viewing area at a lower height. The very high height will begin to interfere as the child grows up and begins to learn to stand up by holding onto the sides of the bed. If you want to buy bumpers for a crib that are 20 centimeters in size, you may create the danger that the child will rest his feet on them and fall out on the floor.
    • Thickness. In this regard, elements of greater width benefit. They will protect against impacts, drafts, and cold walls if the furniture is in such a place. Crib bumpers work best. Too thin (as developmental models are made) do not save you from anything, but only perform entertaining and developmental functions.
    • Washable. The most convenient covers are those that can be removed and sent to washing machine. In this case, you will not have to wash the bumper along with the filler, which means it will not be deformed and will last longer.

    Video

    A mandatory attribute that is recommended to be taken care of along with the purchase of a crib and bed linen. Despite the fact that newborns do not know how to roll over from side to side, at times they develop such a high motor activity that you are just amazed.

    But when the child begins to crawl, sit down, and stand up, the protection is guaranteed to save the mother from more than one loss of nerve cells, and the baby from more than one bruise. The design of the protection is quite simple, so it is easy to make it yourself. We present to your attention step by step instructions for sewing protection.

    How many sides of the crib should the bumper protect?

    Depends on the age of the child and the location of the crib. A child under 1 year of age should be protected from expected impacts from all sides. For an older child, protection in places where the crib comes into contact with the walls of the room is suitable. As for the location, sometimes parents move it close to theirs, lowering one of the walls - in this case, protection will only be needed on three sides.

    How long should the bumper be?

    To do this, accurately measure the length and width of the crib. If you sew protection around the entire perimeter of the crib, the bumper will consist of 8 main parts - 4 double rectangles (2 large and 2 small) the size of the side walls of the crib, the gap between which is filled with filler. If protection is needed from 2 or 3 sides, the number of parts is correspondingly reduced to 4 and 6, respectively.

    How tall should the product be?

    If you are sewing for a newborn, half the height of the rods (about 35 cm) will be enough. If you are sewing “to grow,” it is advisable that the rods be closed as much as possible, taking into account the fact that the height of the mattress in almost all cribs is adjustable.

    As the experience of the author of the article shows, the hardest blows occur at the moment when the baby learns to stand from his own height. It is unrealistic to predict the trajectory of such a flight. But it is a fact that the unfortunate little head gets much more than the legs and butt.

    Only natural, pleasant to the touch. The colors are only pastel colors, no bright or flashy colors, they have an exciting effect on the baby. It is highly desirable to have a large, cheerful drawing - studying it is very beneficial for the development of the baby.

    Most often used for bumpers:

    • chintz;
    • flannel;
    • cotton;
    • calico;
    • satin;
    • knitwear

    The preferred material is calico, for three reasons. The first is that calico is quite hard, this is not very good for children's bedding, but just right for a bumper. The second is the relative cheapness of the material. The third - calico practically does not shrink. If you have chosen a different type of fabric and have doubts about its shrinkage, be sure to wash and dry the fabric before sewing. This is guaranteed to save you from a “surprise” after the first wash (and you will have to wash the bumper more than once).

    Which filler is better to choose?

    Bumpers use two types of fillers - thin foam rubber 1 cm thick and thick padding polyester. The concept of “thick padding polyester” is flexible, because This material varies significantly in density. Therefore, be guided by your own feelings, but for such a product a padding polyester of 80-200 g/m2 will be sufficient.

    Can a sewing machine handle this?

    This question arises in full height in case of choosing padding polyester as a filler. Unlike foam rubber, padding polyester is a fairly soft material and tends to bunch up when washed. To prevent this from happening, the padding polyester must be quilted, i.e. sew with the fabric in at least two places. Not every sewing machine can sew fabric of this width.

    How to attach the bumper to the crib?

    There can be three mounting options - regular ties, Velcro, or a combination of the first and second. The ties must be attached to the corners of the crib plus in addition to every 3-4th rod.

    The place where the ties are attached is at the top and bottom of the panel. Those. for normal fastening you will need 16-24 regular ties or Velcro. When using two types of ties, 8 Velcro strips are usually used (4 corners of the crib, 2 for each corner), and the ties are additionally secured along the sides of the crib.

    Which ties are better?

    There can be three options for making ties - regular fabric ties and Velcro fasteners made of the same material as the bumper itself, as well as ties made of satin ribbon. The least hassle is with satin ribbon ties; you only need to trim its edges so that the fabric does not fray.

    But any ties are not highly reliable. They will receive a lot of attention from the young researcher. So don't expect them to all stay in place at the end of their life without having to be re-attached. But Velcro fasteners have a much better chance in this regard, because... it is attached to the outside, where it will be much more difficult for the little one to inspect it.

    Are there additional elements expected?

    There can be three types of such elements. The first is decor in the form of appliqués, ruffles, frills, and lace. The second is additional educational stripes for the baby; they can be made from a fabric of a different type, color, texture, or individual parts with a different type of filler (for example, foam balls). The third option is pockets for small items. As a rule, it is better to place them on the outside, because... The child will not simply look at such elements, but will definitely want to tug at them or try them out.

    So, have you made your choice? Now you can go to the store to buy materials.

    What you need to sew a crib protector

    The main thing is the fabric for the cover. When purchasing, choose fabric in such a way that there is minimal waste. If a fabric folded in half is enough to sew a bumper, you will need fabric based on the total length of the bumper + 8 cm (1 cm seam allowance on each panel). Try to ensure that the panels of fabric along each side of the crib are cut from a single piece of fabric, unless the design plan calls for the use of several types of fabric.

    Be sure to allow for the manufacture of ties and Velcro. To make one regular tie, you will need a strip of fabric 35-40 cm long and 2-3 cm wide. To make one Velcro, you will need a rectangle of fabric measuring 7x10 cm. Please note that the parts for the strings and Velcro must be cut along the lobar (along the edge).

    For frills and ruffles you will need a strip of fabric 7-15 cm wide (depending on your preferences) and 2-3 times longer than the size finished product, they also need to be cut along fractional lines. When making protection, it is best to make a frill for each side of the crib separately and connect them together at the corners of the crib. Seams in other places are allowed, but their location should be provided in advance so that they do not spoil the attractiveness of the appearance.

    Other materials needed for sewing a bumper:

    • foam rubber or synthetic padding - the length of the filler should be equal to the total length of the bumper, the width - its height. As a rule, the linear width of the filler covers twice the height of the bumper, in which case it will need half as much;
    • satin ribbon(for ties, if necessary);
    • Velcro (if necessary);
    • materials for making decor (if necessary);
    • threads;
    • needle;
    • scissors;
    • safety pins;
    • chalk for marking patterns on fabric;
    • felt-tip pen or marker for marking the filler;
    • ruler;
    • paper and a simple pencil - if necessary, for making a pattern;
    • sewing machine;
    • iron.

    Step-by-step instructions for sewing a crib protector

    1. Make a pattern. To do this, draw two rectangles on paper. The length of each of them should correspond to one of the sides of the crib, the height should correspond to the desired height of the finished bumper. Cut out two patterns. This step can be omitted and markings with chalk directly on the fabric.
    2. Make fabric patterns according to the number of sides of the crib. To cut out the parts for one side of the crib, fold the fabric in half, pin the pattern to it using safety pins and trace the outline of the pattern with chalk. When cutting with scissors, allow for a 1 cm seam allowance.
    3. Finish all edges of the panels (except the edges) with zigzag stitches. On the finished parts, make chalk markings for the location of fasteners, pockets for small items and decor.
    4. Cut out the filler. A marker or felt-tip pen is best for marking parts. The size of the parts should be 0.5 cm smaller than the patterns.
    5. Make fastenings. Depending on the type of fastening, the procedure will be as follows:

    To make a regular tie, fold the prepared strip of fabric in half, face up, and iron it. Fold each half in half again, tucking the edges of the fabric inside the ties. Fold the edges of the tie inward as well. Sew the stitch on the machine. The second way to make it is to fold the tie in half with the right side inward, sew along one side and one long side, and turn it outward using a regular pin. Fold the remaining open edge inward and secure - either by hand or with a stitch.

    To make a tie from a satin ribbon, cut the ribbon into pieces of the required length and finish the edges with a loop stitch or a zigzag stitch, fold and hem.

    To make Velcro, fold a rectangle of fabric in half, right sides inward, along the long side. Sew on both sides, turn inside out, iron. Sew the soft side of the Velcro onto the fastener. Sew the hard side of the Velcro to the side. Fold the unsewn fourth side of the fastener under and stitch along this side to the border.

    1. Prepare frills and ruffles (if provided). For each side of the crib, take a strip of fabric of the required length and width, hem the outer edges (for a frill - one edge, for a ruffle - two edges). Place two parallel machine stitches at the desired location with a maximum stitch length 5mm apart and pull the fabric to the required length. A more labor-intensive option is to place tucks of the same depth at equal intervals and stitch the edge of the frill. It is advisable that the studs “look” at different sides- for this, it is best to start making such a frill from the center of the head of the crib. Connect the prepared parts together using a sewing seam. As mentioned above, it is best to match the joints to the corners of the crib.
    2. Sew all the pockets, Velcro, decorative elements to the front and inner panels, and glue the appliqués.
    3. Connect the panels together in a circle in the places where they will adjoin the corners of the crib. Naturally, if the protection is not along the entire perimeter of the crib, there is no need to close the panels in a circle. Thus, you will get two large fragments - from the outer and inner panels.
    4. Fold the prepared panels with the right sides inward, insert the prepared ruffle between them. Fold the ties in half, the ends of the ties should be between the panels, and the place where they are folded should protrude beyond the edge of the seam by 0.5 cm. Sew all the elements together. It will be very good if you can combine not only fabric parts, but also padding polyester (if it is used as a filler). If the sewing machine can’t handle such a thickness, it doesn’t matter.
    5. Turn the panels outward and place the prepared pieces of filler in the appropriate places. Insert the ties so that they are level with the top ties. Because The stitching will be done from the outside, you put the fold of the ties inside, and their ends remain outside. Fold the edges of the bumper over and stitch the bottom.
    6. When using padding polyester, step back 4-5 cm from the bottom edge of the bumper and sew a circular stitch. This must be done so that the filler does not get lost.
