For a long time I looked with admiration from the sidelines at all the variety of transformations of boys into girls, shirts into dresses, but did not particularly encroach on my husband’s wardrobe for this purpose. Until, once again, while sorting out the closet, I found there denim shirt since the time of our student days (and it’s scary to think that it was already... a very long time ago, in general).
Surprised that I didn’t get rid of it during the last revision, I was determined to do it this time and put it in a bag with things “for moving” ( “things for moving” - these are those things that are still quite excellent, but are already completely boring, so I don’t throw them away, but look for new owners for them, sending them to various charity events or simply taking them to church). Well, as often happens to me, it was not possible to transport this bag right away. Luckily this time.

I don’t remember exactly how this idea (not new to me at that time) came to me, but I eventually decided to remake this shirt into summer dress-a sundress for active recreation and to replenish the already diverse collection of Internet ideas on this heart-warming topic.

But jokes aside. Let's get down to business.

It is logical that first you need to decide on the model (otherwise it will turn out to be “go there, I don’t know where”, etc. according to the text). I wanted a loose bag dress that was close to sporty style. The basis for this was the pattern of model 121A from Burda 8/2015:

The sleeves are immediately to the side (I have a summer dress planned!). Insert with folds - too. I divided the front pattern into two parts, mercilessly cutting it above the darts in accordance with my idea and based on the geometry of the parts of the source material (shirt).

Well, now you can go all out, that is, start cutting! Yaba-da-ba-doo! Since I got a fairly large “trophy” (as much as size 54!), I didn’t bother with undoing it, but simply cut the seams (for those who have undressed a smaller man, I still recommend ripping out the seams - a couple of centimeters at cutting can play an important role). My pattern layout turned out like this:

From the front of the shirt

I decided to keep all the details of the front of the shirt due to the fact that everything torn off on jeans is clearly visible. From the front of the shirt, cut out the lower front part of the dress, aligning the waist line (on the dress) with the middle height of the shirt pockets. I cut off one layer of the yoke (usually on men's shirts it is double).

From the back of a shirt

From the back, accordingly, we cut out the lower part of the back of the dress, aligning the upper cut with the seam along which the shirt yoke is sewn.

From shirt sleeves

From the sleeves we cut out the upper parts of the front and back with a fold in the middle of each part. In order to “shove” the patterns of the new parts into the frames of the sleeves, I had to cut them upside down (in the photo, the lower cut goes beyond the border of the sleeve, but this is the original pattern, I ended up cutting it along the dotted line, which is visible on the pattern).
*If the shirt has a pattern or is made of fabric for which the direction of the cut is important, this number may not work.

Optional step: From the remnants of the sleeves, we cut out burlap pockets (the pockets were made in the side seams).

Having successfully “wedged” all the parts and sighed with relief, we happily cut out and start sewing. If you don’t make pockets, the algorithm turns out to be completely simple: darts, connect the upper part of the front with the lower part, do the same for the back, then shoulder and side seams - a total of 6 seams!

P.S. I had one more nuance related to the nature of the fabric. In order to hide the difference between my seams and the factory denim ones, I covered the new seams and cuts with leather piping:

• Once you have outlined the 2nd side of the shirt, cut off the excess fabric and form the 2nd side of the shirtdress. You have now created the basic pattern for your future dress.
• Now (either by machine or by hand) sew both parts of the shirt dress together from the wrong side. On the wrong side, make folds on the sleeve slits and sew on a machine.
• Fold the resulting sleeve in the middle and attach it to the arm slot from the wrong side so that the middle of the sleeve is on the outside. You should have a short sleeve shirt dress.
• From the wrong side, use a basting stitch to sew the sleeve to the arm hole. Then cut off the unnecessary fabric and sew the sleeve on a machine. Do the same with the 2nd sleeve, but remember that they should be the same in length.

Why did an apron suddenly appear among dresses and long tops? Because you can sew a dress using almost the same principle, only the back is not completely cut out.

Option number 1: with an elastic band. The edge of the front, starting from the top of the collar, then going down to the back, and ending on the other side of the front, tuck and baste. Sew, leaving unstitched gaps (in the picture the place is indicated by dashes). It is possible to determine where the elastic should be fixed only after trying it on. Thread the elastic into the pin and through one unstitched gap, insert it into the seam, thread it into the next gap. The ends of the elastic should stick out. Now secure one end of the elastic by inserting it completely into the seam, immediately stitching the gap and stitching along the edge of the elastic perpendicular to the seam, thereby securing it. Pull the elastic as necessary so that it gathers the back well enough, cut it and also fasten it. Sew along the edge of the ripped area on the collar, inserting the upper ends of the front into the seam.

Option number 2: bow on the back. In this case, for example, from the sleeves of a shirt, we sew 2 identical strips of the desired width and length. We rip the side seams to the width of the stripes plus as many centimeters as it takes you to hem the edge. We insert the ends of the strips on each side into the side seams and stitch them. There should be room at the top for a hem. Hem the edge from the front of the collar and down to the other side. We sew up the ripped area on the collar. We sew four belt loops (like on the waistband of trousers for a belt), the desired width and length. We sew them on the back at the top edge at an equal distance (in the middle free space there should be more). We pass the sewn strips through these loops and tie a bow, sufficiently tightening the back of the shirt. True, perhaps, it will not be very convenient to tie it on yourself without outside help.

This option does not require any alterations, you just need to tie the shirt like this: put it under your armpits, fasten it with a button that meets on the chest and then all the rest down. Twist the sleeves slightly, bring them behind the back, cross them and tie them in the front.

And this version of the dress requires the addition of elastic under the chest, a more complex bodice and a stripe sewn from the sleeves, tied with a bow on the chest.

Cut the top of the shirt, including the shoulders and collar, in a straight line, allowing for the hem allowance. Cut the sleeves to the desired length, turn the edges under and stitch. Fold the top and stitch. Insert the rubber band.

Dress with elastic bands

Cut the top with sleeves from the shirt in a straight line. Cut 2 strips from the sleeves. One narrower strip is for the drawstring, the other wider is for the frill at the top. Sew the drawstring from the inside out at the waist line, insert an elastic band. We hem the second strip along two short and one long edges, apply the raw edge to the top of the dress and sew it on. Then we make the hem inside out and insert the elastic.

Dress with a tie

We cut out the sleeves of the shirt, cut off the top part with the collar. We sew the side and top edges. We insert a tie into the upper folds and tie it with a bow on one side.

Open back dress

Cut off the sleeves of the shirt. We cut out the front part like this: starting from the side seam from the bottom of the armhole up to the collar at the shoulder seam, leaving allowances for the seams. Back: draw a straight horizontal line across the entire width from the side seams from the beginning of the armholes. At the collar, mark two points on the sides at the shoulder seams. From these points we draw parallel vertical lines to the previously marked horizontal one. Cut out the sides of the back of the shirt. We have a vertical rectangle in the middle. We cut it across, stepping back a few centimeters from the collar. We cut out the upper part and hem the edges as in the photo. We sew the edges of the front together with the lower part of the back. We cut the rest of the rectangle lengthwise into three equal strips and braid it. Attach the braid to the bottom edge of the top part.

This dress requires 3 shirts. For one we cut off the bottom at the waistline. We rip off the sleeves. Sew on the sides. For the second and third shirts, cut off the top with sleeves and collar. We steam out the sleeves of one shirt, cut them to the required length, and weld them in the middle at the bottom and top. To the bottom of the sleeves we sew strips cut from the remaining unnecessary parts of the first shirt. We make darts on the shelf and back. From the other two shirts, we sew the cut-off lower parts together. We cut a wide, long strip for the belt from the sleeves of the shirt used for the hem. We sew a belt according to the right sizes. We gather the upper edge of the hem. Sew on the belt. Sew the top of the dress with the belt. We sew in the sleeves. We sew a button onto the belt on one side and make a loop on the other.

Another simple option for a dress made from a shirt is to cut it along the lines marked in the photo, hem it and insert ties, for example from thin ribbons.

You can make a light summer dress by inserting elastic bands under the bust and on top. The sleeves of the shirt can be cut off and the armholes processed. Cut out rectangles from the sides and replace them with wider pieces of material, gathered in folds.

You can sew a frill of the desired width to the bottom of the dress. The top can be made from another fabric by edging it with trim cut from the sleeves of the shirt.
