    A runny nose, or rhinitis, is the most common respiratory disease. And this is not surprising, because the nasal mucosa is the first to take the blow low temperatures, dry and dusty air, viruses or bacteria. And each of us knows how to treat a runny nose, and even more about what remedies for a runny nose help us.

    But things are completely different when it comes to treating a runny nose during pregnancy. There is no longer a place for experiments and self-medication, because every wrong decision can be very costly for both mother and baby.

    What drops can be put into the nose during pregnancy?

    The difficulty of treating a runny nose in a pregnant woman at any stage is that not a single doctor will recommend the use of vasoconstrictor nasal drops. Drugs of this particular group are the most popular in the treatment of any type of runny nose, and are prescribed both by doctors and by patients themselves for self-medication. Vasoconstrictor drops, or otherwise decongestants, quickly remove swelling of the nasal mucosa, which significantly alleviates the patient’s condition.

    To date, there are no research results that illustrate the effect of vasoconstrictor nasal drops on the human fetus. Yes, they cannot exist, because who would agree to risk the life and health of their unborn child for the sake of science? However, there are results of such animal studies that show the teratogenic (detrimental to the fetus) effect of adrenergic agonists, which are the main active ingredients of vasoconstrictor drops for the common cold. Any nasal drops that contain ephedrine, phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, oxymetazoline, phenylpropanolamine, indanazoline, naphazoline, tetrizoline, xylometazoline, oxymetazoline, tramazoline are potentially dangerous for the unborn child and are also contraindicated for nursing mothers. You can immediately see: these are the majority of drops for the common cold, which are usually recommended in pharmacies as very effective and fast-acting.

    So what kind of drops for a runny nose can be used during pregnancy? You need to be treated somehow. Well, if you are a responsible mother, then you will certainly ask your obstetrician-gynecologist this question. And your doctor, taking into account the characteristics of your pregnancy and medical history (possibly allergic), will prescribe the optimal drug. Of the approved drugs for pregnant women, the first to be used are saline solutions: Humer, Salin, Dolphin, Aqualor, Physiomer, Aquamaris, Alergol sea water, etc. Taisa. These drugs are essentially identical and serve to facilitate the evacuation of mucus from the nasal cavity and sinuses, and also, due to increased osmotic pressure, are able to reduce swelling of the mucous membranes.

    The next most important homeopathic remedies for treating runny nose in pregnant women are: Delufen, Euphorbium compositum. These drugs will not give a quick effect, but already on the second or third day your condition will improve significantly.

    Application of a local antiseptic and anti-inflammatory drug based on essential oils Pinosol also allowed for pregnant women, however, no longer than three days without exceeding the dose (2 drops four times a day).

    You can also use the tools that are always at hand, and which will be discussed in more detail in the next chapter.

    Treatment of rhinitis in pregnant women with folk remedies

    Natural folk remedies for treating a runny nose during pregnancy should still be gentle and limited to medications for topical use. Thus, any negative impact during pregnancy will be excluded.

    • Onion. Chop a fresh large onion, spread it on a flat surface and inhale the onion vapors until they are exhausted. You can stir the onions during the process to refresh the evaporation. As a variant of this method, in case of severe nasal congestion, about a quarter of one onion can be chewed, divided into two or three parts. It is important to take a deep breath before starting chewing, and gradually exhale while chopping the onion in your mouth. Thus, the nasal turbinates are ventilated with onion vapor from the inside, which provides a good anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect. There is no need to swallow the onion, spit it out, rinse your mouth, and start chewing a new piece. Carry out the procedure twice a day.
    • Kalanchoe. Kalanchoe juice has a whole complex useful properties, which help treat a runny nose and also strengthen local immunity, preventing the occurrence of a new cold. Grind one Kalanchoe leaf and pour a teaspoon of boiled water into it. Mix the water well with the pieces of leaf, mash the mixture to get more juice. Pour the resulting juice into a separate glass container. Place three drops of Kalanchoe juice into each nasal passage three times a day. Continue treatment for a week.
    • Peppermint and eucalyptus oil. Mix mint and eucalyptus oils in equal proportions. Use the resulting oil at night, applying the composition to the nasal mucosa using cotton swab. Just dip the stick in the oil, let the excess drain off, and insert it into the nasal passage to a comfortable depth. The oil will prevent the nasal mucosa from drying out during sleep, relieve swelling, and provide an antiseptic effect for several hours.
    • Garlic. Chop one clove of garlic as much as possible and pour boiled, cooled water over it: three parts water to one part garlic. Infuse the water for half an hour, then stir, strain, and use for instillation into the nose: three to four drops in each nasal passage four times a day. Continue treatment until recovery.
    • Beetroot juice. A good way to increase local immunity is beetroot juice. To prepare drops based on it, you should grate fresh red beets and pour the mixture with the same amount of cooled boiled water; mix well, skim off the foam and leave for two hours. Strain the infusion and use a whole pipette for instillation into the nasal passages twice a day. Carry out the treatment for four days.

    Activities to promote recovery

    Sometimes organizing the right lifestyle and space during illness brings no less, and sometimes more significant, benefits than the main treatment. Especially when it comes to treating a pregnant woman, when every little thing can play an important role.

    But let's not dwell on the little things. During the period of acute respiratory disease, the manifestation of which is rhinitis, It is important that the air in the room where the pregnant woman is located is sufficiently humid. This will help to establish timely evacuation of accumulated mucus in the nose, and quickly establish normal functioning of the mucous membranes. In order to fulfill this condition, you will need a humidifier. In addition, this device can be used as an inhaler by dropping into the reservoir essential oil mint, juniper, thuja, or eucalyptus, after which the air in the room will be filled with a medicinal substance.

    Inhalations as a separate procedure. For medicinal purposes, it is better to use special inhalers, since inhaling too hot vapors can provoke even greater swelling of the nasal mucosa. However, warm vapors facilitate the penetration of the medicinal substance into all accessible nasal cavities and warm them evenly. Therefore, carrying out inhalations without using an inhaler, but in an open way (without creating a greenhouse effect), promotes recovery.

    Massage of reflex zones. One of the effective aids for rhinitis. You should simultaneously massage the bridge of your nose and the area above upper lip. This massage is good for nasal congestion. Another method of massage is tapping movements on the nasal bone on both sides, above the maxillary sinuses and brow ridges.

    Breath. This is the main function that suffers when you have a runny nose, but it is this function that should not be turned off completely now. Try to establish shallow but smooth breathing with a long inhalation and exhalation. By doing such exercises for 5 minutes every hour, you will cope with a runny nose much faster.

    Something that shouldn't be ignored

    Is there a way to avoid medications during treatment? runny nose in pregnant women How to free your breath and help your stuffy nose? And how can a pregnant woman protect herself from this unpleasant disease?

    - one of the most common diseases that can cause a lot of discomfort to the expectant mother. This is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity, sometimes it is accompanied by a feeling of nasal congestion (due to severe swelling of the mucous membrane), pain, and copious discharge from the nostrils.

    Causes of runny nose during pregnancy

    Viral infection– the most common cause of rhinitis. Viral rhinitis occurs especially often in the autumn-winter period, when acute respiratory diseases peak. The disease is manifested by swelling of the nasal mucosa, liquid mucous transparent discharge. Often viral rhinitis is one of the symptoms of acute respiratory viral infection(ARVI), accompanied by increased body temperature, headaches, and weakness.

    A bacterial infection, as a rule, develops against the background of a long-term, sluggish viral infection, due to which local immunity in the nasal cavity is reduced, the balance of natural microflora is disrupted, and active reproduction of opportunistic microorganisms such as streptococci and staphylococci begins. In this case, nasal discharge becomes thicker and takes on a green or greenish-yellow hue.

    Allergic origin worries many expectant mothers in the spring and summer. When plants begin to bloom, there are many microscopic pollen particles in the air, which, settling on the nasal mucosa, cause irritation and trigger allergic processes. As a result of this, swelling of the nasal mucosa increases, transparent, liquid mucous discharge appears; the disease may also be accompanied by swelling of the mucous membrane of the eyes and lacrimation.
    Manifestations of rhinitis bring a lot of discomfort to a pregnant woman.

    Swelling of the mucous membrane prevents normal free nasal breathing, which becomes a frequent cause of sleep disturbances, irritability and fatigue, and constant nasal discharge causes a lot of inconvenience to the expectant mother.

    Fortunately, today pharmacies have a sufficient range of remedies for the common cold that are also suitable for pregnant women.

    Treatment of runny nose during pregnancy

    Cleansing products. Effective cleansing the nasal cavity from secretions promotes faster recovery and subsidence of swelling, and prevents the addition of a bacterial infection.

    Any saline solution is ideal for this purpose. For example, ordinary saline solution, i.e. 0.9?% solution of ordinary salt. Effectively washing away secretions, it has a gentle and beneficial effect on the nasal mucosa, and to some extent relieves swelling of the mucous membrane.

    Spray or drops Aquamaris is purified sea water from the Adriatic Sea. It has no contraindications for use, except for individual intolerance to the components of the drug. This is an excellent product that can be used to cleanse the nose without restrictions on the frequency and duration of procedures.

    Also great for rinsing Aqualor. This is a spray containing natural sea water enriched with mineral salts. It is safe for pregnant women, children and even newborns.

    Complex nasal rinse Dolphin is a set consisting of a bottle with a nozzle for rinsing the nose and a set of soluble powders containing not only salt, but also minerals and extracts medicinal herbs. Dissolve the powder from one sachet in warm water in a bottle, close tightly with a rinse attachment, and shake lightly to completely dissolve the powder.
    Place the nozzle on one nostril, tilt your head slightly to the side opposite the nostril being washed, and hold your breath. Lightly press the walls of the bottle - the solution will enter the nasal cavity, effectively washing all areas of the mucous membrane. Repeat the procedure on the opposite side.

    Thanks to the mild solution and the method of washing, the nasal mucosa is effectively cleansed, viral and bacterial particles and allergens are washed out of the nasal cavity, and swelling subsides.

    Contraindications to the use of DOLPHIN are individual intolerance to the solution, as well as acute and chronic otitis media. You can use DOLPHIN without restrictions on the frequency and duration of use.

    Mucosal softeners nasal membranes and increasing local immunity. Drops PINOSOL contain rapeseed oil, pine oil, eucalyptus and peppermint. Thanks to this combination, PINOSOL has a softening effect on the nasal mucosa, helps relieve swelling, and increases local immunity. Contraindications to the use of PINOSOL are individual intolerance to the components of the drug, rhinitis of allergic origin.

    Gripferon drops contain a substance that stimulates local immunity and increases the body's resistance to infection. Gripferon can be used at any stage of pregnancy; it is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance and severe allergic reactions.

    Nasal decongestants. In order to relieve the unpleasant symptom of nasal congestion, you can use vasoconstrictors. By acting on the mucous membrane, these drugs help reduce swelling and restore free nasal breathing. However, before using medications from this group, you should clear the nasal cavity of secretions so that the vasoconstrictor has a targeted effect on the cleansed mucous membrane.

    Pregnant women are allowed to use a vasoconstrictor SANORIN at any time. This medicine is available in the form of drops or spray. Contraindications for use are rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, glaucoma, and intolerance to the components of the drug. It is important to remember that long-term use (more than 3-4 days) of a vasoconstrictor can lead to atrophy (depletion) of the nasal mucosa and, as a result, temporary loss of smell and repeated swelling of the mucous membrane.

    Remedies for allergic rhinitis. The mechanisms of development of allergic and infectious rhinitis are different. When an allergen is exposed to the nasal mucosa, it begins to experience allergic reactions, due to which swelling develops in the nose and abundant mucous-liquid appears transparent discharge. Medicines with an antiallergic effect will help eliminate these symptoms. Before using antiallergic nasal medications, you should consult your doctor.

    FLIXONASE is a spray whose main active ingredient is glucocorticosteroid hormone, which is a highly effective antiallergic agent. FLIXONASE has only a local effect on the nasal mucosa and does not affect the body as a whole. Contraindicated in case of individual intolerance to the components of the drug.

    VIBROCIL– nasal drops that combine antiallergic and vasoconstrictor effects. VIBROCIL is also available in the form of a gel, in which case the drug is placed as deep as possible into the nasal cavity. Carrying out this procedure before bed will ensure that your nose does not get stuffy all night. VIBROCIL is contraindicated in case of glaucoma, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, intolerance to the components of the drug. The medicine can be used at any stage of pregnancy, with caution and under the supervision of a doctor.

    Before using any remedy(anti-allergic, vasoconstrictor, immunomodulatory) it is imperative to clear the nasal cavity of secretions, for example, using products such as AQUAMARIS or DOLPHIN, and only after that can other drugs be used. In this case, the effect of the drugs will be directed directly to the nasal mucosa. Without prior rinsing of the nose, treatment is ineffective, since the medicine will leave the nasal cavity along with the secretions.

With nasal congestion, constant flow of mucus from it and breathing problems, even your general condition may suffer expectant mother. Why a runny nose occurs during pregnancy and how to treat it, we will tell you in this article.

    Nasal congestion during pregnancy is extremely unpleasant feeling. To alleviate this condition, you need to understand what causes the condition. In short, nasal congestion can be caused by:

    • rhinitis during pregnancy (then only drugs are used);
    • and can be caused by a runny nose, which also has a different nature (viral, microbial, allergic and natural), and the prescribed therapy depends on this.

    Both rhinitis and runny nose are, in fact, an inflammatory process in the area of the nasal mucosa. The inflammatory process in the mucous membranes is usually accompanied by severe swelling of the mucous membrane and nasal congestion, discharge from the nostrils and discomfort.

    A runny nose can be caused during pregnancy by:

    • Viral infections.

    These are the most common reasons colds and runny nose. Most often they occur in the off-season or during the cold season. This type of runny nose is manifested by severe swelling of the mucous membranes and clear watery discharge. It is often one of the symptoms of ARVI, along with cough, fever and sore throat.

    • Microbial infections.

    Usually occurs as a secondary infection against the background of a long viral process. At the same time, immunity in the nasal cavity is reduced, the microbial balance is disturbed and opportunistic flora actively multiplies. In this case, thick viscous discharge of a green or yellowish tint appears.

    • Allergic processes.

    This occurs during the season of flowering plants or grass dusting, in windy and dry weather. Allergens penetrate the mucous membranes of the nose, which leads to inflammation and swelling, the nose is stuffy, liquid transparent mucus is released abundantly, the nose itches, sneezing and itchy eyes with watery eyes occur.

    • Natural processes characteristic of pregnant women.

    As for rhinitis in pregnant women, its occurrence is caused not by infections or allergies, but by the very physiological state of the woman during pregnancy.

    Pay attention to the air humidity in your home; dry air can cause a runny nose. Also make sure to use the most gentle cleaning agents and detergents possible. In Mom's Store you can choose and buy:

    Why is a runny nose dangerous in pregnant women?

    • First of all, swelling of the mucous membrane prevents you from breathing normally through your nose, and the discharge irritates the skin around the nose from constant friction.
    • With a stuffy nose, sleep and intake are disrupted, fatigue and irritation occur.

    But it’s the baby who suffers the most when he has a runny nose. Due to his mother's breathing problems, he receives less oxygen and may experience a state of hypoxia, which is extremely harmful for him. Therefore, a runny nose in pregnant women needs to be actively and quickly dealt with; today there are quite a lot of means to combat it.

    How to treat a runny nose during pregnancy

    When you have a runny nose, it is important to actively cleanse the nasal cavity, use medications to relieve irritation and soften the mucous membranes, and use medications to ease breathing and fight infections. For the allergic component of a runny nose, it is important to use specific, anti-allergic drugs.

    Treatment of a runny nose consists of several procedures.

    Cleaning the nose

    Removing mucus and crusts from the nasal cavity helps you recover faster, relieve swelling and prevent the addition of a microbial infection. Saline solutions are used with these whole ones. These include:

    • 0.9% saline solution;
    • drops, sprays Aquamaris;
    • Aqualor sprays;
    • Salin;
    • Dolphin nasal rinsing complex.

    These solutions have no contraindications for use during pregnancy and can be used without restrictions on frequency. These are saline solutions with normal or sea salt, which help to mechanically remove mucus from the nasal cavity, moisturize the mucous membranes, wash away viruses and microbes from their surface; due to the salt solution, swelling is slightly reduced.

    The drugs are used for nasal drops or rinsing; you can use them as much as you need - they have no restrictions or contraindications. Each drug must be used according to the instructions.

    Softening the nasal mucous membranes during a runny nose in pregnant women

    To prevent the mucous membranes from drying out and causing a feeling of irritation, oil drops are used to relieve congestion and swelling. These include Pinosol with rapeseed, pine, peppermint and eucalyptus oils. Due to this, the drops soften the nasal mucosa, relieve swelling and stimulate local immunity. Unfortunately, these drops are contraindicated if you are allergic to the components of the drug or have an allergic rhinitis.

    Stimulation of local immunity during runny nose in pregnant women

    To stimulate the immune system, you can use Oxolinic ointment and Grippferon drops, which affect the mucous membranes and activate the production of protective factors in them. These drugs are used at any stage of pregnancy, according to the instructions. The duration of administration is not limited, until all symptoms completely subside.

    Relieving nasal congestion during pregnancy

    Vasoconstrictors are used to relieve congestion and reduce swelling. When exposed to mucous membranes, they relieve swelling and normalize nasal breathing. But the drugs are used only on the nasal cavity cleared of mucus.

    During pregnancy, you need to be careful with these types of drops and sprays. Although they act at the local level, part of the drug is still resorbed (enters) into the blood.

    Until 12-14 weeks of pregnancy, you should, if possible, stop using them. After this period, you can use vasoconstrictor drugs for no more than 3-4 days. At the same time, it is worth abandoning adult forms of the drug, using children's concentrations and release forms.

    The drugs can be addictive, therefore, long-term use is prohibited. In pregnant women, Xylometazoline preparations can be used in reduced dosages in the form of a spray or drops.

    Medicines for allergic rhinitis

    For allergies, rinsing the nose with sea water or saline solutions will also be useful to reduce swelling and wash away allergens. But to relieve swelling and inflammation, antiallergic drugs will be indicated. Before using them, you should consult your doctor.

    One of the popular remedies for allergies, including in pregnant women, is Vibrocil. It has a double effect, relieves swelling and allergic inflammation. It can be used in both spray and gel form. The latter can be placed deep into the nose before going to bed. It can be used at any stage of pregnancy under the supervision of a doctor until unpleasant symptoms are relieved and standing becomes easier.

    To protect mucous membranes from contact with allergens, the drug Nazaval is used - it creates a film on the surface of the mucous membranes that prevents contact with allergens. To eliminate allergy symptoms, local medications with corticosteroids - Flixonase, Tafen - can be used, but only strictly under the supervision of a doctor and only after the end of the first trimester of pregnancy (after 12 weeks).

    The most the right decision in case of allergies, there will be separation (elimination of contact) with allergens in order to eliminate the cause of the runny nose.

    Rhinitis in pregnant women

    This is a special type of runny nose. During pregnancy, many women experience difficulty breathing through their nose without signs of a cold or allergy.

    This happens due to changes in the body of pregnant women. The condition is called physiological rhinitis of pregnancy.

    It usually develops after 6-10 weeks of pregnancy due to:

    • increase in the concentration of pregnancy hormones (estrogens),
    • fluid retention in the body;
    • increasing the permeability of small vessels.

    The result is difficulty in nasal breathing, a feeling of nasal congestion, and mucus secretion. Such a runny nose does not require the use of any serious medications, since it is one of the companions of pregnancy, but, as a rule, a woman needs to relieve the symptoms of rhinitis.

    To facilitate nasal breathing with such a runny nose, frequent ventilation, humidification of the air in the house, and sleeping half-sitting with your head elevated are necessary.

    It is also important to regularly carry out activities aimed at cleansing the nasal cavity and moisturizing the mucous membranes.

    Use salt solutions, sea water and sprays with them. If your nose is severely stuffy, you should consult a doctor to rule out other causes of a runny nose and decide on further treatment.

    Now let's take a closer look at how to treat a runny nose in each trimester of pregnancy.

    How to treat a runny nose during pregnancy, 1st trimester

    The main rule for the first trimester is no self-medication! The most important thing is to consult a doctor without fail to identify the causes of a runny nose and choose a treatment procedure.

    To independently relieve any runny nose (of any nature), you must:

    Treatment of rhinitis in pregnant women in the first trimester:

    Treatment of allergic rhinitis in the first trimester:

    • inhalation with mineral water or saline;
    • Nazaval spray (covers the mucous membrane with a film and prevents contact with allergens).

    Treatment of nasal congestion in the first trimester:

    • rinsing the nose with saline solutions;
    • inhalations with mineral water or saline;
    • the use of sprays or drops with saline solution (Humer, Aquamaris, Aqualor, Salin, Marimer, etc.);
    • lubricating the mucous membrane with olive or sea buckthorn oil;
    • applying “Star” balm to the wings of the nose;
